Philosophie der Arithmetik The Philosophy of Arithmetic ). His view was that there was a strict empiricism, but on being shown (by the great German logician Gottlob Frege) that such an analysis could not possibly succeed, Husserl shifted his ground and started to defend the idea that the truths of arithmetic had a kind of necessity that could not be accounted for by empiricism. EDMUND HUSSERL: Philosophy and the Crisis of European Man (Lecture delivered by Edmund Husserl, Vienna, 10 May 1935; therefore often referred to as: "The Vienna Lecture". [From: Edmund Husserl, Phenomenology and the Crisis of Philosophy PRO EUROPA website, where you will find much other good material, including (e.g.) Thomas Mann's response (1937) to the Third Reich stripping him of his honorary doctorate degree from the Frederick-William University at Bonn. PRO EUROPA 's epigraph to the section of their website containing these texts is also fitting to quote here: "The struggle against everything whose only claim to dignity is its materiality, to refuse to be merely a passive and determined element in the order of Creation this seems to me the primordial virtue which transformed an Asian peninsula into Europe" - Carlo Schmid
"The lights are going out all over Europe. We at least shall try to relight them." ("Daniel Corbett, Christian Filips 7D", apparently from a German/Belgian student's 2000 online yearbook webpage
I In this lecture I will venture an attempt to awaken new interest in the oft-treated theme of the European crisis by developing the philosophico-historical idea (or the teleological sense) of European man.

Jurgen Habermas A new fundamental science, pure phenomenology, has developed within philosophy: This is a science of a thoroughly new type and endless scope. Edmund Husserl All philosophical disciplines are rooted in pure phenomenology, through whose development, and through it alone, they obtain their proper force. Edmund Husserl At the lowest cognitive level, they are processes of experiencing, or, to speak more generally, processes of intuiting that grasp the object in the original. Edmund Husserl Experience by itself is not science. Edmund Husserl If all consciousness is subject to essential laws in a manner similar to that in which spatial reality is subject to mathematical laws, then these essential laws will be of most fertile significance in investigating facts of the conscious life of human and brute animals. Edmund Husserl Immanent and transcendent experience are nevertheless connected in a remarkable way: by a change in attitude, we can pass from the one to the other.

Hua Guofeng (Hua Kuo-feng) (1920- ) Led China through the transitional period immediately following the (Great Proletarian) Cultural Revolution Mao Zedong Gang of Four Deng Xiaoping's policies of reform began to take shape during Hua's tenure, beginning around 1978. By 1980, power and formal leadership had gradually shifted to Deng Xiaoping and his supporters. Hua remains a member of the Central Committee (as at December 2003). Hume, David (1711-1776) Scottish philosopher (scepticism), psychologist and historian; held that task of knowledge is not to comprehend being, but to provide a guide to practical life (utilitarianism); the only objects of authentic knowledge could be mathematics since no other relations can be deduced by logic, but only from experience, which was after all only a "stream of impressions" whose causes are essentially unknowable. He held that the repeated occurrence of one event prior to another can form the basis for the formation of conceptual knowledge, but cannot constitute proof of cause-and-effect - "how do we know that the Sun will rise in the East tomorrow?" - but nevertheless knowledge can provide sufficient certainty to constitute the basis of practical life. Thus Hume attempted to rescue the positive content of Locke's philosophy from the subjectivist critique of Berkeley . See Hegel on Hume's contribution David Hume lived in the constitutional monarchy of George II under the Prime Ministers Walpole, Pelham and Pitt, a Britain which had thoroughly established a stable bourgeois system of government and was interested in building its Empire. Hume died in the year of the American War of Independence.
