HEIDEGGER

Do Ethicists Need Ethics?
Philosophy was born from the rigor of one man's life and speech, but it abandoned him to find its own way to live. A philosopher who truly understood Socrates must no more revere his voice than follow him into death and silence. Since principles based on reason apply to all, they must be discoverable by all. They must therefore break with Socrates himself: they must survive and be written. And once they are written, they take on a life all their own. Today, the old relationship between speaking about the world and living well, between leaving disciples and leaving a scar, is again as urgent as it is confused. If Romanticism sprang from the age of reason, Postmodernism might be the age of values. Conservatives demand them ; most people, perhaps especially art lovers , take them for granted while pufing them up; smart critics see them behind the pretended objectivity of every institution, society, and theory. Appropriately, Heidegger's Nazism has become a test case, just as the Holocaust has challenged the validity of art . No serious postwar thinker grew more philosophically influential or more publicly reserved, and none was so close to this century's greatest evil. Through his great influence on hermeneutics and deconstruction, his rejection of "values" is supposed to have tainted all postmodern attacks on

"Book on Philosopher's Life Stirs Scholarly Debate Over Her Legacy"
More on Arendt's relationship with Heidegger By WILLIAM H. HONAN One of the gossipy curiosities of 20th-century philosophy is that Hannah Arendt, the German-born Jewish philosopher remembered for her fierce and unforgiving attacks on totalitarianism, had a youthful fling in the 1920s with Martin Heidegger. Heidegger, the influential philosopher, later became a prominent Nazi and at one time aspired to be Hitler s chief ideologue. Most scholars believed that by the 1930s Arendt and Heidegger had gone their separate ways and their early liaison could be dismissed as a short- lived dalliance. But now a book based on their newly unsealed correspondence, "Hannah Arendt/Martin Heidegger" (Yale University Press) by Elzbieta Ettinger, has revealed that their affair was not evanescent but burned with white hot intensity for four years. Most disturbing to some scholars after the war, Arendt and Heidegger resumed their friendship. And Arendt, whose fiery reproach had extended to European Jews whom she said had "collaborated" with the Nazis in their own destruction, did almost everything she could to whitewash the unrepentant Heidegger, who had succeeded in banning Jewish professors from the University of Freiburg, which he led from 1933 to 1934.

Back to Top Mme. Blavatsky, is best remembered as the founder of Theosophy, a branch of philosophy which marries religious concepts of the New Age, Christianity, Paganism, the Occult and Philosophy. Blavatsky among other endeavors held séances and meetings often well attended by influential people of her day, including Arthur Conan Doyle, writer of Sherlock Holmes, Westcott and Hort, translators of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, and others. She also is known for bringing a renewed interest in the Gnostic Gospels and early Writings which were dismissed as fantasy or legend, including "The Shepherd of Hermes" and tales of Jesus as a young child. Her re-translations of the New Testament combined with certain Aryan philosophies culminated in a re-introduction and clarification of " Root Race Theory" which requires the elimination of a prior, 'primitive' or first race in order for the final, superior Race of Aryans descended from a superior race can occur. Blavatsky could probably best be characterized as the "Mother" of the Modern New Age movement.

Heidegger, Martin On Time and Being . Translated by Joan Stambaugh. 100 p. 5-1/4 x 8 1972, 2002 Paper COBE $12.00sp ISBN: 978-0-226-32375-6 (ISBN-10: 0-226-32375-7) Spring 2002
On Time and Being charts the so-called "turn" in Martin Heidegger's philosophy away from his earlier metaphysics in Being and Time to his later thoughts after "the end of philosophy." The title lecture, "Time and Being," shows how Heidegger reconceived both "Being" and "time," introducing the new concept of "the event of Appropriation" to help give his metaphysical ideas nonmetaphysical meanings. On Time and Being also contains a summary of six seminar sessions that Heidegger conducted on "Time and Being," a lecture called "The End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking," and an autobiographical sketch of Heidegger's intellectual history in "My Way of Phenomenology."
Library Journal
"The title of the English translation is that of the lead essay, the highly celebrated lecture which Heidegger gave in 1962 and which bears the same title as the never published 'third division' of the 'first half' of
