Martin Heidegger (1949)
Existence and Being
Source Existence and Being from Existentialism from Dostoyevsky to Sartre edited by Walter Kaufman published in full. Descartes, writing to Picot, who translated the Principia Philosophiae into French, observed: "Thus the whole of philosophy is like a tree: the roots are metaphysics, the trunk is physics, and the branches that issue from the trunk are all the other sciences . . ." Sticking to this image, we ask: In what soil do the roots of the tree of philosophy have their hold? Out of what ground do the roots-and through them the whole tree-receive their nourishing juices and strength? What element, concealed in the ground, enters and lives in the roots that support and nourish the tree? What is the basis and element of metaphysics? What is metaphysics, viewed from its ground? What is metaphysics itself, at bottom? Metaphysics thinks about beings as beings. Wherever the question is asked what beings are, beings as such are in sight. Metaphysical representation owes this sight to tho light of Being. The light itself, i.e., that which such thinking experiences as light, does not come within the range of metaphysical thinking; for- metaphysics always represents beings only as beings. Within this perspective, metaphysical thinking does, of course, inquire about the being which is tho source and originator of this light. But the light itself is considered sufficiently illuminated as soon as we recognise that we look through it whenever we look at beings.

The Case of Martin Heidegger, Philosopher and Nazi
Part 1: The Record
By Alex Steiner 3 April 2000 Use this version to print We begin today a three-part series on the life and work of twentieth century German philosopher Martin Heidegger. Part 2 will be posted on Tuesday, April 4 and Part 3 will appear on Wednesday, April 5. Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) has been considered by many to be one of the titans of twentieth century philosophy. His international reputation was assured with the publication in 1927 of Being and Time The success of Being and Time was immediate and its influence pervasive. Many currents of contemporary thought over the past 70 years have been inspired by and in some cases directly derived from the work of Heidegger. Among these we can mention existentialism, hermeneutics, postmodernism, eco-feminism, and various trends in psychology, theology and literature. His writings have influenced thinkers as diverse as Herbert Marcuse, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Derrida, Paul Tillich and countless others. Heidegger's distinguished career as professor of philosophy at the University of Freiburg was marred by a singular event in his life. After Hitler's seizure of power in 1933 Heidegger the world-renowned philosopher became Heidegger the Nazi, holding membership card number 312589.

Martin Heidegger : Between Good and Evil
by Rudiger Safranski, Ewald Osers (Translator). Heidegger's writings are turgid and difficult, and a layperson who approaches them in order to gain an idea of how the author influenced twentieth century thought is likely to be frustrated by their impenetrability. Safranski's biography is a valuable resource, providing an accessible and actually rather detailed account of the evolution of Heidegger's ideas. He also does an excellent job at elucidating the tricky topic of the relationship between his philosophy and his Nazi sympathies before and during World War II. He treats the philosopher fairly and with a detachedness that fits the subject very well... anonymous review Click here to learn more about this book

26. Martin Heidegger And Environmental Ethics
After World War II, martin heidegger directed much of his thinking to technology and to the impact of technology on our perceptions of human life.
http://www2.hmc.edu/~tbeckman/personal/Heidart.html
MARTIN HEIDEGGER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS After World War II, Martin Heidegger directed much of his thinking to technology and to the impact of technology on our perceptions of human life. One of the essays developed along this path was "The Question Concerning Technology." It is unfortunate that the essay is not widely read because it carries the critique of technology out of its usual context and form and delivers it into a new light where there is, perhaps, some progress to be made. Furthermore, the essay has special significance to environmental issues and, I believe, lays a new groundwork for an ethical approach to our relations with the environment. The tension in this essay comes into sharp focus, at the end, in Heidegger's preposterous suggestion that art may be what we need to carry us out of the dangerous epoch of technology. I say that this is "preposterous" on two grounds. First, our society thinks of technology as its distinctive talent and strength, not as a disaster. Second, our society sees art as frivolous and impotent in the "real world" of capitalistically generated technology. Heidegger himself recognized this irony and devoted the major portion of the essay to a careful analysis of the dangers that befall us in technology. His suggestion regarding art came late and remained poorly explicated. My intention, in this essay, is to interpret Heidegger's thesis about technology and art in the context of forming an ethical approach to the environment. What we shall discover along this path is that human nature, technology, and art are all intertwined in complex ways. At present, these relationships stand in great confusion and this confusion is part of the danger of our time. But this confusion can be grasped and dispensed with by thinking our way into the essence of our technological epoch. We may also ask, What is the essence of art that it might bear some relation to this epoch? And finally, What is our essence as human beings in relation to technology, art, and our natural environment?

Martin Heidegger (1889-1976)
Martin Heidegger Martin Heidegger was an influential German philosopher best known for his Being and Time, Heidegger tried to shed new light on an issue that many lonesome adolescents have wondered about - the question of being. He thought he could cut to the essence of the question with an imaginative array of words. Essence was a word he used often, including his article "The Essence of Truth," which he described as "truth as truth." He was trying to describe "being" without the relation or connection to other things that allow us to place and thereby to understand. He was pursuing ontology, without epistemology but metaphysics nevertheless, and muddled concerning "spirit," in league with his fellow German Oswald Spengler . British philosophers such as Bertrand Russell and A.J. Ayer disliked Heidegger's work, Russell commenting that "One cannot help suspecting that language is here running riot. An interest point in his speculations is the insistence that nothingness is something positive." Heidegger believed in German culture, tradition and a third way between communism and capitalism. He said: "Everything essential and great has only emerged when human beings had a home and were rooted in a tradition." He was a critic of modern science and what he thought was humanity's subjugation to technology. He wrote with an a sense of impending crisis or catastrophe and spoke of a "darkening of the world" and an "enfeeblement of the spirit." He referred to Germany caught between the world of Anglo-American democracy to the west and Soviet communism to the east. Germany, he believed, was thereby under pressure and "most endangered."

Hegel and the Greeks
From Conference of the Academy of Sciences at Heidelberg, July 26, 1958 by Martin Heidegger Internet resource made available by More C The title of this conference can be transformed into a question: How does Hegel present the philosophy of the Greeks within the horizon of his philosophy? We could respond to such a question by historically studying Hegel's philosophy starting from the present point of view and by such means follow in step Hegel's historical presentation of Greek philosophy. Such a method provides historical research with historical connections. Such a project has its proper justification and utility. Nevertheless, something other is in play. By stating "the Greeks" we think back to the beginnings of philosophy; by stating "Hegel" we think to its completion. Hegel himself understands philosophy in such a manner. Within the title "Hegel and the Greeks" it is the whole of philosophy within its history that speaks, and that today in a times in which the collapse of philosophy becomes flagrant; because it has migrated into logistics, psychology, and sociology. These autonomous domains of research assure themselves of increasing importance and polymorphous influence as functional forms and performance instruments in the political-economic world, that is, in an essential sense, of the technical world. However, this collapse of philosophy, determined from afar and irresistibly, is not without further ado the end of thinking, but rather something else, however withdrawn from public accessibility. What follows will ponder for a while on this in an attempt to bring to mind the matter of thought. The matter of thought comes into play. Matter means here that which, by its nature, the presentation requires. To correspond to such requirement, it is necessary that we let ourselves gaze from out of the matter of thought and prepare for thought , determined by its own matter, to transform itself.

Between Good and Evil
Translator Ewald Osers
One of the century's greatest philosophers, without whom there would be no Sartre, no Foucault, no Frankfurt School, Martin Heidegger was also a man of great failures and flaws, a Faustus who made a pact with the devil of his time, Adolf Hitler. The story of Heidegger's life and philosophy, a quintessentially German story in which good and evil, brilliance and blindness are inextricably entwined and the passions and disasters of a whole century come into play, is told in this brilliant biography. The best intellectual biography of Heidegger ever written and a best-seller in Germany, Martin Heidegger: Between Good and Evil does not shy away from full coverage of Heidegger's shameful transformation into a propagandist for the National Socialist regime; nor does it allow this aspect of his career to obscure his accomplishments. Written by a master of Heidegger's philosophy, the book is one of the best introductions to the thought and to the life and times of the greatest German philosopher of the century. studies German, philosophy, and history in Frankfurt and Berlin. http://www.geocities.com/athens/delphi/9994/heidher.html
Introduction In a career stretching over half a century Martin Heidegger attempts to question the limitations of the Western philosophical tradition and open a space for thinking outside of it. At the beginning of this tradition he places the pre-Socratics, in particular Anaximander, Parmenides, and Heraclitus. In the fragments of these thinkers he finds both the foreshadowing of the tradition's development and a source for thought which would avoid the confines of this later developmentassociated with nihilism and the technological domination of the earthby experiencing anew its initial unfolding. In this paper I explore Heidegger's relationship to Heraclitus in several texts by examining Heidegger's interpretation of particular fragments and placing them in the context of his philosophy. In the course of this exploration I show the influence which Heidegger attributes to the early Greek thinkers in determining our experience of Being right up into the modern, technological age. This modern determination of Being shows itself in the dominance of a logical approach to beings which seeks to make correct predictions about them. Heidegger traces the emphasis on logic and correctness to the Greek terms lovgo§ and ajlhvqeia, but argues that both termsthe first taken as gathering, the second as unconcealmentoriginally comprehended the relatedness of beings to one another and to what remains concealed. In the fragments of Heraclitus Heidegger not only finds support for these interpretations, but also stimulation for thinking outside the prejudices of the West, and my analysis covers these issues as well.

As a result, Heidegger developed a philosophy in which he argued that the nature of human existence involved active participation in the world, regardless of what that participation entailed. This he labeled "being there," in German Dasein Heidegger's philosophy is sometimes overshadowed by the enthusiastic support he showed for the Nazis and their education policies when he served as the Rector for the University of Freiburg 1933-34. He not only publicly converted to National Socialism, but he also deliberately distanced himself from Husserl, a Jewish philosopher whom he had previously admired. Because of this, Heidegger was suspended from all teaching duites after the war from 1945 to 1950. The exact scope and nature of his Nazi sympathies remains a matter of debate.

Contact Us Philosopher of the Month March 2003 - Martin Heidegger Iain Thomson Focusing on Heidegger’s earliest philosophical work, Kisiel characterizes the period from 1917-1927 as Heidegger’s "phenomenological decade." After ten years spent on the proving grounds of Aristotle and Medieval theology, Heidegger published his early magnum opus , the brilliant but unfinished Being and Time (1927). Although this text remains Heidegger’s most famous and influential work, the legendary difficulties posed by its forbidding combination of jarring philosophical originality and stylistic opacity make understanding its major claims an arduous enterprise for even a philosophically-trained reader. The facilitation of such an understanding is thus the primary goal of this "philosophical snapshot." In Being and Time , Heidegger develops and deploys a method called "phenomenological testimony" in order to interpret our ordinary everyday ("ontic") experience of phenomena such as guilt and anxiety "ontologically," that is, in terms of what they reveal about the structural characteristics definitive of human existence. (Ontology is the study of what is. It thus makes perfect sense that Heidegger’s pursuit of "the question of Being" focuses on ontology. But what is so original is the way Heidegger uses phenomenology, the study of the way things manifest themselves, to answer ontological questions about what those things
