Article Excerpt
Antonio Gramsci was born in Sardinia in 1891 and died in Rome in 1937. Frail from birthhe was less than five feet tallhe suffered from poor health throughout much of his life. Awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Turin, he joined the Socialist Party in 1914, on the eve of the Great War. Seven years later, already well-known as a journalist and as a leader of Turin's insurgent factory council movement, Gramsci joined a walkout at a Socialist congress in Livorno and helped to found the Italian Communist Party, subsequently representing the party as a member of Parliament. In 1926, four years after the rise to power of Mussolini's fascists, Gramsci was arrested and imprisoned, despite his immunity as a legislator. While in prison, he kept a series of notebooks that were posthumously published starting in 1948thus securing Gramsci's reputation as perhaps the most original Marxist thinker of his generation.

Dr Philip Holden University Scholars Programme National University of Singapore
This is again a term from Gramsci. In The Modern Prince and The Prison Notebooks Gramsci describes the subaltern classes as those subordinated by hegemony excluded from any meaningful role in a regime of power. Gramsci himself has workers in mind, but the term has also been used to describe other groups who are excluded and do not have a position from which to speakfor example peasants women. Gramsci further notes that "the subaltern classes , by definition, are not unified and cannot unite until they are able to become a 'State'".

- Antonio Gramsci 1. In this essay, I will consider, through Gramsci, some philosophical and political concepts of the Marxist tradition which, because of their linguistic form, are today controversial or unpopular. I will deal particularly with the concepts of orthodoxy, production and totality. 1. Orthodoxy and productivism 3. Gramsci's thought has been interpreted in many ways. However, what is common to most interpretations is the emphasis on Gramsci's total or almost total distance from Marxist orthodoxy. By Marxist orthodoxy one generally understands the economist, productivist reduction of the theory of revolution to the doctrines of the Second International and to trends which are supposedly already present in Marx's Capital itself. This means, basically, the idea that the economic sphere strictly and necessarily determines the cultural sphere and that the question of economic growth should emphatically remain a central concern of a revolutionary society. Gramsci opposition to, or distance from, this tendency is apparent not only in the Prison Notebooks , but also in his earlier writings. For example, in "The Revolution Against

60. Teaching Neo-Gramsci
gramsci, antonio (1971) Selections from the Prison Notebooks, ed. and trans. Quintin Hoare and Geoffrey NowellSmith. London Lawrence and Wishart.
http://www.bisa.ac.uk/bisanews/0205/bisa0205_2.htm
Teaching Neo-Gramscian Perspectives Adam David Morton Taking these issues into account, we want to suggest here a two-pronged strategy: Firstly, one way into neo-Gramscian perspectives is to situate them within the general discipline of International Relations (IR) theory and debates between positivist and post-positivist approaches. Secondly, it is useful to contrast particular features of hegemony in order to highlight fundamental theoretical, political and thus normative differences between mainstream approaches and neo-Gramscian concepts. Positivism/Post-Positivism Debate in IR A Neo-Gramscian Concept of Hegemony Hegemony within a historical structure is constituted on three spheres of activity. Firstly, the social relations of production The second sphere of activity are forms of state . State power rests on the underlying configurations of social forces. Therefore, rather than taking the state as a given or pre-constituted institutional category, consideration is given to the historical construction of various forms of state and the social context of political struggle. This is accomplished by drawing upon the concept of an historical bloc and by widening a theory of the state to include relations within civil society. An historical bloc refers to the way in which leading social forces within a specific national context establish a relationship over contending social forces. It is more than simply a political alliance between social forces represented by classes or fractions of classes. It indicates the integration of a variety of different class
