Rosalind E. Krauss: The Originality of the Avant Garde
"What would it look like not to repress the concept of the copy?" Well, obviously, not very much different. Which is how we know it is a copy. Or do we? The question, from Rosalind E. Krauss, comes at the pivotal moment in her essay "The Originality of the Avant Garde." Krauss has observed freshly made casts of The Gates of Hell in a Rodin retrospective. Rodin is dead, and yet she has seen new Rodins. They lead her to see the copy, the inauthentic , as the long-repressed underside of Modernism. Fortunately, postmodern artists have already begun to turn from "repression" to "play." They "demythologize...aesthetic purity and freedom" and "watch it splintering into endless replication." To ask that we revalue copies is to question how art relates to the past, its past and ours. In fine-art traditions, skill was attained by study of past masters. In our century too, fine art has been pillaged, but quite often along with commercial culture. Theft has served the avant-garde agenda of making art and the world anew. I shall argue that Krauss's notion of the copy is the wrong way to phrase modernist and postmodern appropriations. It tries hard to use the past and to rebel against it, but it ends up by doing neither one. (Krauss, with her usual insight, revisits many tough questions in dialogue with three co-authors, for a textbook on modern art

FOREWORD
This book does not run a straight course from beginning to end. It hunts; and in the hunting, it sometimes worries the same raccoon in different trees, or different raccoons in the same tree, or even what turns out to be no raccoon in any tree. It finds itself balking more than once at the same barrier and taking off on other trails. It drinks often from the same streams, and stumbles over some cruel country. And it counts not the kill but what is learned of the territory explored. For the third time in my life, work on a book has been spurred by an invitation to give a series of lectures. Special Lectures at the University of London led to Fact, Fiction, and Forecast. John Locke Lectures at Oxford University became Languages of Art. And the first Immanuel Kant Lectures at Stanford University provided the impetus for the present book and the basis for its last four chapters, although most of the final chapter is new. The first chapter was read at the University of Hamburg on the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Ernst Cassirer; and the first four chapters have appeared as separate papers. The list of those who have helped is, as usual, impossibly long and I can mention only Stanford University and its Philosophy Department, especially Patrick Suppes; my colleagues Israel Scheffler, W. V. Quine, and Hilary Putnam; and my Project Zero associates Paul Kolers and Vernon Howard.

, Edward Heath , and John Major . He had the unique distinction of having been made a peer by a Labour prime minister and a Companion of Honour by a Conservative one. Goodman was born in London and studied law at University College London, and Downing College, Cambridge, where he obtained a double first. Although Goodman advised governments of all political persuasions, he is best remembered for his links with the Labour Party, and particularly Harold Wilson. Perhaps the key to his success as a lawyer and negotiator was that he carried very little ideological baggage, thereby winning the trust of people with widely differing backgrounds and persuasions. A lifelong bachelor who considered women to be intellectually inferior, he held numerous offices, including chair of the Arts Council, master of an Oxford college, chair of the
