William Godwin
William Godwin was born 3 March in Cambridgeshire, England, and was educated, beginning in , at Hoxton Academy, a liberal Presbyterian college in London. Though he was trained for a career as a dissenting minister, Godwin remained in that profession for less than four years, preaching in Ware, Stowmarket, and Beaconsfield. Over time he became plagued by doubts, first embracing the heresy of Socinianism (Unitarianism), and by declaring himself a "complete unbeliever." His most famous work, An Enquiry concerning Political Justice , appeared in , inspired to some extent by the political turbulence and fundamental restructuring of governmental institutions underway in France. Godwin's belief is that governments are fundamentally inimical to the integrity of the human beings living under their strictures, and he propounds an enlightened anarchism as the key to individual development. The radicalism of the work concerned authorities in the British government, but partly because of its expense it was not deemed threatening enough to warrant prosecution. Godwin did, however, catch the attention of more radical thinkers for whom his work became an essential text. These included the poets Wordsworth Coleridge , and Southey , also, later, Percy Bysshe Shelley Political Justice was followed by his most enduring novel

    • Introduction
English philosopher, novelist, essayist, historian, playwright, and biographer. Although known primarily for his philosophical works and his influence on English Romantic writers, Godwin is also remembered for his contributions to the Gothic literary tradition. His best-known novel, Things As They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams (1794), is a didactic tale about the evils of government that borrows heavily from the popular Gothic fiction of the day. Caleb Williams dramatizes many of the anarchistic and rationalistic beliefs that Godwin put forward in his philosophical masterpiece, An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice and Its Influence on General Virtue and Happiness (1793), which argues that humankind is innately good and capable of living harmoniously without laws or institutions. Godwin's only other work in the Gothic tradition is the occult tale St. Leon

    SUMMARY OF PRINCIPLES
The reader who would form a just estimate of the reasonings of these volumes, cannot perhaps proceed more judiciously, than by examining for himself the truth of these principles, and the support they afford to the various inferences interspersed through the work. I. The true object of moral and political disquisition, is pleasure or happiness. The primary, or earliest class of human pleasures, is the pleasures of the external senses. In addition to these, man is susceptible of certain secondary pleasures, as the pleasures of intellectual feeling, the pleasures of sympathy, and the pleasures of self-approbation. The secondary pleasures are probably more exquisite than the primary: Or, at least, The most desirable state of man, is that, in which he has access to these sources of pleasure, and is in possession of a happiness the most varied and uninterrupted. This state is a state of high civilization.

  • There is no denying the dramatic interest and thematic pertinence to the fictional writings of William Godwin and Mary Shelley of the metaphor of the "mental anatomy" (Introduction 15–17 and passim ), which gives the title to William D. Brewer's critical monograph, and contours its extended comparison of this father-and-daughter pair of authors. An anatomy in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries (in the old form of the word "an atomie") is a violent delapidation of an organic unity. In the primitive conditions of hospitals and morgues contemporary with the Godwin-Shelley writers, only cadavers could be anatomized and made intelligible, dissected and made visible, the veins, nerves, and musculature traced, flayed, and probed. The metonym of the eye—its "terrible aspect"—is hegemonic in Enlightenment cultural politics. In one pathetic instance, the dead foetus, or as it was officially called the abortion, could by now be anatomized
