contents: introduction life anarchism education ... how to cite this piece William Godwin (1756 - 1836) was the first writer ‘to give a clear statement of anarchist principles’ (Marshall 1993: 191). He was one of the first English-language writers to recognize the threat of state-controlled education and to set out the qualities of an alternative, free, education. Today he is perhaps best remembered as the husband of Mary Wollstonecraft (who wrote the feminist classic: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman -1792, the father of Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein - 1818) and the father-in-law of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (who was influenced by his radical libertarianism).
Life
William Godwin’s life certainly had its ups and downs. Born into a family of Dissenters, he was individually (and sometimes brutally) tutored by Samuel Newton, an extreme Calvinist. He later joined the Dissenting Academy at Hoxton (aged 17). Initially wishing to enter the ministry, he came to describe himself as a ‘complete unbeliever’. His conservatism turned to republicanism He seems to have reasoned his way through to these conclusions. His radicalism came from an encounter with writers such as Rousseau and political events such as the American War of Independence. Having turned away from the ministry William Godwin earned a living through writing and teaching. The former included short novels, biographies and newspaper pieces. In response to the fierce debate and argument around the French Revolution (from 1789 on), Godwin wanted to set out a properly philosophical and principled statement of political theory. The result was

"Universal Benevolence." The English Romantic Movement started just about when the 18th century ended. The movement with its "high thought and warm feelings," a reaction to the "vices and follies of the world," continued throughout the first quarter of the 19th century. During this period there came to the forefront certain literary and political agitators, who brought about, beginning with the great Reform Bill of 1832, the law reforms that were to take place as the balance of the 19th century unfolded in England. We may mark the year 1793 as the beginning point of the English Romantic Movement; it was the year that William Godwin brought out his work, Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Political Justice William Godwin, born on March 3rd, 1756, at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, came from a line of dissenting ministers. He was the seventh of thirteen children in the family; they were brought up in the Calvinistic faith, an upbringing which undoubtedly had a significant impact on Godwin. At the age of seventeen, William was sent to a theological academy at Hoxton, near London. After his graduation, he was to take a position as a minister at Stowmarket in Sulfolk. Within the year he was to leave Sulfolk and give up the ministry permanently. Godwin then carried himself to London, there to earn a precarious living by his pen.

William Godwin on Education
William Godwin
Nothing can be more pitiable... There is but one considerable objection that seems to oppose all these advantages [to a libertarian education]. The preceptor is terrified at the outset, and says, How shall I render the labors of literature an object of desire , and still more how shall I maintain this desire in all its vigour, in spite of the discouragements that will daily occur, and in spite of the quality incident to almost every human passion, that its fervour disappears in proportion as the novelty of the object subsides? But let us not hastily admit this for an insuperable objection. If the plan here proposed augments the difficulties of the teacher in one particular point, let it be remembered that it relieves him from an insufferable burthen in other repects. Nothing can be more pitable than the condition of the instructor in the present modes of education. He is the worst of slaves. He is consigned to the severest of imprisonments... Like the unfortunate wretch upon whom the lot has fallen in a city reduced to extremities, he is destroyed, that others may live... He is regarded as a tyrant by those under his jurisdiction, and he is a tyrant.

Political Justice emphasizes the relationship between systems of government and ethical philosophy? In it he argues for the ultimate perfectibility of mankind, which he believed would result when reason assumed its proper place. Existing political systems, however, failed to produce happiness, equity, or freedom: in his insistence on the corrupting power of government, Godwin went beyond Rousseau 's ? Power? Property was to be held in common and made available to the neediest?

William Godwin, chivalry, and Mary Shelley's The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck
Papers on Language and Literature Spring 1999 by Brewer, William D As the industrial revolution transformed England during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a number of important writers re-evaluated the precapitalist institution of chivalry. In A Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790), Mary Wollstonecraft scorns Edmund Burke's expressions of "gallantry" and "knightly fealty" (24) in the part of Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) in which he deplores the treatment of Marie Antoinette by the revolutionaries. She speculates that "probably the spirit of romance and chivalry is in the wane; and reason will gain by its extinction" (29) . Lord Byron is even more critical of chivalry in his addition to the preface of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Cantos I and II ( 1812) . Responding to objections that his "`vagrant Childe' . . . is very unknightly, "he points out that

Point Spatial Analysis of the Endangered American Burying Beetle: Texas
Track:
Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): LaRied Oates, Darrel McDonald, William Godwin
The historical distribution of the American burying beetle (ABB) embraced the eastern half of North America. This range included 35 states from Nebraska to Maine, and south from Texas to Florida. In the 1920s, the beetle underwent a decline in population. Current distribution encompasses eight states that include Rhode Island, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. In 2004, the beetle was rediscovered at the National Guard Base, Camp Maxey, in Lamar County Texas by Dr. William Godwin. In 2005, a mark and recapture study was performed from May to August. To capture beetles, 5-gallon buckets were buried in the ground and baited with decomposing chicken. All traps were surveyed with a Trimble Pro/XRS. Data were recorded and typed into a Microsoft Access database then imported into ArcGIS for spatial analysis. Results indicated a NE-SW distribution trend with the highest population occurring in a savanna short-leaf pine stand.

British Essayists: William Hazlitt: William Godwin
January 15, 2008 by balkan
No work in our time gave such a blow to the philosophical mind of the country as the celebrated Enquiry concerning Political Justice. Tom Paine was considered for the time as a Tom Fool to him, Paley an old woman, Edmund Burke a flashy sophist. Truth, moral truth, it was supposed, had here taken up its abode; and these were the oracles of thought.
Oh! and is all forgot? Is this sun of intellect blotted from the sky? Or has it suffered total eclipse? Or is it we who make the fancied gloom, by looking at it through the paltry, broken, stained fragments of our own interests and prejudices? Were we fools then, or are we dishonest now? Or was the impulse of the mind less likely to be true and sound when it arose from high thought and warm feeling, than afterwards, when it was warped and debased by the example, the vices, and follies of the world? Godwin may have met JW in 1863, when he was an established Bristol architect. He was a founding member of The Arts Club, of which he was a member from 1863-1873 and was a member of many other men's clubs. Like JW, he was a dandy, a man about town, of considerable charm and culture. In 1874 Godwin collaborated with JW on the installation of an exhibition at 48 Pall Mall. In September 1877 JW commissioned Godwin to build him the White House, 35 Tite Street, to be large enough for him to open an atelier. The Metropolitan Board of Works at first objected to Godwin's designs, and revisions and delays engendered higher costs than anticipated. In June 1878 an exhibition stand designed by JW and Godwin was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle ( Harmony in Yellow and Gold: The Butterfly Cabinet (YMSM 195) Both Godwin and Whistler were interested in theatrical design and production. Godwin directed the 'Pastoral Players' at Combe Hill Farm for Lady Archibald Campbell, and JW painted their patron in costume (
