He was appointed reader in logic there in and extraordinary professor in . He died in , leaving most of his works, all written in Latin, to be published after his death. Geulincx summarized his philosophy in the phrase, "Ita est, ergo ita sit", ("it exists, therefore it is so"). He believed in a "pre-established harmony" as a solution to the mind-body problem , dying 25 years before Leibniz 's better–remembered formulation of the idea. In Leibniz's philosophy, the doctrine of pre-established harmony was linked with optimism, the notion of this world as the "best of all possible worlds". But Geulincx made no such linkage. He is cited by Samuel Beckett , whose character Murphy remembers the 'beautiful Belgo-Latin of Arnold Geulincx', and in particular the gloomy nostrum (frequently repeated by Beckett to inquisitive critics) Ubi nihil vales, ibi nihil velis

ARNOLD GEULINCX (1624-1669), Belgian philosopher, was born at Antwerp on the 31st of January 1624. He studied philosophy and medicine at the university of Louvain , where he remained as a lecturer for several years. Having given offence by his unorthodox views, he left Louvain, and took refuge in Leiden , where he appears to have been in the utmost distress . He entered the Protestant Church , and in 1663, through the influence of his friend Abraham Heidanus, who had assisted him in his greatest need, he obtained a poorly paid lectureship at the university. He died at Leiden in November 1669. His most important works were published posthumously. The Metaphysica vera (1691), and the IvcA vEavrOv, sive Ethica (under the pseudonym "Philaretus," 1675), are the works by which he is chiefly known. Mention may also be made of Physica vera Logica restituta (1662) and Annotata in Principia philosophiae R. Cartesii Geulincx principally deals with the question, left in an obscure and unsatisfactory state by Descartes , of the relation between soul and body. Whereas Descartes made the union between them a violent collocation, Geulincx practically called it a

Leaving Louvain he settled at Leiden, where he became a Calvinist. He is principally remembered for his occasionalism , or denial of a causal relationship between mind and body, and for using the image of two synchronous clocks, later made famous by Leibniz , to illustrate his doctrine (see pre-established harmony ). But Geulincx requires the constant intervention of God, whereas for Leibniz the harmony is the outcome of the pre-established nature of the related substances. Geulincx also wrote extensively on ethics.

Arnold Geulincx
Arnold Geulincx was a Flemish Cartesian philosopher who was one of the proponents of occasionalism Originally a Roman Catholic, Geulincx adopted Calvinism in 1658. He taught at Leuven and later at Leiden. His major works, “Ethica” and “Metaphysica Vera”, were published posthumously. Arnold Geulincx is best known for his work as an ethicist. His philosophy is characterized by a curious blending of rationalism and mysticism As a devoted Cartesian, Geulincx sought to resolve the dualist's problem of mind-body interaction by appealing to divine intervention as the genuine source of all causation, presaging the occasionalism of Nicolas Malebranche . The coincidence of mental thoughts with bodily motions, he argued, is like the conformity between unconnected but synchronized clocks. According to Geulincx, body and mind cannot affect each other. A person's intention to move his body is merely the occasion on which God, the only real cause, produces the movement. Since minds cannot affect bodies, people cannot control their actions; they can only control their wills. Accordingly, Geulincx's ethics stresses a humbling of the will.
