Under the Voice of the Other
By Brynjulf Stige (
I have been reading, writing, and thinking about standards of qualitative research lately. Thinking about research involves thinking about knowledge which involves thinking about problems and possibilities of interpretation and understanding. According to the philosophical hermeneutics developed by Hans-Georg Gadamer (1960/1989; 1966/1977), there is a universality to the hermeneutic problem. It does not belong to the domain of research practices (solely). It is thus not a methodological problem; it is a life problem that includes but also goes beyond the question of what to do or not to do. In many ways, hermeneutics has its origins in breaches of intersubjectivity, that is; situations where meanings are not completely or immediately understandable so that there is need for an interpretive effort. At the same time; interpretive efforts have a certain intersubjective or dialogic character. James Risser (1997) has written a nice little book about philosophical hermeneutics that comments upon and develop themes such as the “importance of the other” and “the eminence of the poetic text.” This book inspired me to think about dialogic and poetic dimensions of music therapy practice, where gestures, sounds, and words interpret each other, in the context of what two or more people create together:

From the Journal of Steven H. Cullinane: Notes on Hans-Georg Gadamer 's philosophy of art as applied to the life and death of an abstract painter. Sunday, February 8, 2004 2:00 PM The Quality of Diamond On February 3, 2004, archivist and abstract painter Ward Jackson died at 75. From today's New York Times "Inspired by painters like Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers, Mr. Jackson made austere, hard-edged geometric compositions, typically on diamond-shaped canvases." On a 2003 exhibit by Pablo Helguera
that included Mr. Jackson: Parallel Lives Parallel Lives recounts and recontextualizes real episodes from the lives of five disparate individuals including Florence Foster Jenkins, arguably the world's worst opera singer; Giulio Camillo, a Renaissance mystic who aimed to build a memory container for all things; Friedrich Froebel, the inventor of the kindergarten education system, the members of the last existing Shaker community, and Ward Jackson, the lifelong archivist of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Parallel Lives pays homage to Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002) and his system of philosophical hermeneutics built through an exploration of historicity, language, and art. This exhibition, which draws its title from the classic work by Plutarch, is a project that explores biography as a medium, drawing from the earlier innovation of the biographical practice in works like Marcel Schwob's "Imaginary Lives" (1896) and John Aubrey's "Brief Lives" (1681). Through display means, the project blends the lives of these individuals into one basic story, visually stating the relationship between individualism and society as best summarized by Gadamer's famous phrase: "we all are others, and we all are a self."

Hans-Georg Gadamer: The Heart of Hermeneutics
Debora Kuan
World Press Review assistant editor Hans-Georg Gadamer on Jan. 25, 2002. Gadamer died March 14, 2002. He was 102 (Photo: AFP). Hans-Georg Gadamer, a renowned figure of 20th-century German philosophy whose magnum opus, Truth and Method (1960), contributed enormously to the field of hermeneutics, the study of the understanding and meaning of texts, died on March 13 in Heidelberg, Germany. He was 102. Gadamer was famously modest and reluctant to talk about himself. Perhaps because his life was marked by personal difficulties—the death of his mother at an early age, caring for his disabled brother, and his own handicap after contracting polio—he fiercely guarded his privacy. The Latin epigram he chose for his Philosophsiche Lehrjahre Philosophical Apprenticeships , 1977) was telling: “ De nobis ipse silemus ” (We keep quiet about ourselves).

[ Attending to the writing of hermeneutic philosophy, in combination with those who work in critical traditions, can therefore potentially enrich the explication of underpinnings and the rationale for adopting a qualitative approach to research. Canada Abstract. Since the early 1970s, the TV has been incorporated into the art world by artists such as Nam June Paik and members of the Fluxus group. It is now commonplace within the art world to place Egg Grows , it is indeed possible to form a hermeneutic description of the TV as having an aesthetic value that speaks to our postmodern world: a world where notions of metaphysical truth, being and identity are deconstructed and replaced with an emphasis on flux, becoming and subjective perspectives. , p.261]. Instead of developing the novel aspects of television, Schroeder can see only its limitations in so far as it offers nothing aesthetically new to the world of theatre. Schroeder's analysis of the merits and pitfalls of television remains at the level of content rather than form. ]. In either case, the TV itself, apart from the programs it projects, has not been the focus of discussion in aesthetics.

Gombrich gets much attention from aestheticians for his linguistic approach to imagery. According to him, pictures are "read" rather than merely seen (Gombrich 1972: 9,39,203; Gombrich 1978b); for a picture is not a natural sign whose message is self-evident to the viewer with an innocent eye but a conventional sign which offers only abbreviate or incomplete visual information to our imagination (Gombrich 1972: 14,53,87,203-241,296-301). So, the beholders must always have learnt how to read it in advance if they are to have a correct understanding of it. And, Gombrich argues, historians of art, whose task has traditionally been considered to be the search for the one true meaning of a picture, are requested to "attune themselves" to the original situation and "correct" their own hypothetical reading to get near to the historical reality (Gombrich 1969: 68,103; Gombrich 1972: 62,272; Gombrich 1978a: 18,21). I quite agree with him in claiming that picture reading is indispensable especially for the professional interpreters of art. We must take special care not to fall a victim to the danger of mystifying the image. But I am at the same time rather skeptical of the idea that we shall get near to historical reality by verifying the meaning of picture-language. Can we really hope so? It is certain that an image allures us to attempt interpretation, but I wonder if it will ever confide the secret of its birth to us truly.

H.-G. Gadamer’s Truth and Method Hans-Georg Gadamer’s Truth and Method Wahrheit und Methode , 1960) has as its major theme that truth cannot be adequately explained by scientific method, and that the true meaning of language transcends the limits of methodological interpretation. Gadamer argues that hermeneutics (the science of interpretation) is not merely a method of determining truth, but that it is an activity which aims to understand the conditions which make truth possible. According to Gadamer, the role of hermeneutics in the human sciences is not the same as the role of methods of research in the natural sciences. Hermeneutics is not merely a method of interpretation, but is an investigation of the nature of understanding, which transcends the concept of method. Truth is not something which may be defined by a particular technique or procedure of inquiry, but is something which may transcend the limits of methodological reasoning. The truth of spoken or written language may be revealed when we discover the conditions for understanding its meaning. Truth and Method is divided into three Parts: the First Part is entitled "The question of truth as it emerges in the experience of art," the Second Part is entitled "The extension of the question of truth to understanding in the human sciences," and the Third Part is entitled "The ontological shift of hermeneutics guided by language." The First Part argues that truth may be experienced through art, and that the truth of art may transcend any particular method of understanding. The Second Part describes the relation between historical study and hermeneutics, and between historical consciousness and understanding. The Third Part discusses the linguistic nature of understanding, and describes how language may be a horizon for hermeneutic ontology.

    hermeneutics
hermeneutics, the theory and practice of interpretation. During the Reformation hermeneutics came into being as a special discipline concerned with biblical criticism. The Protestant theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher expanded the discipline from one concerned with removing obstacles preventing readers from gaining the proper understanding of a text to one concerned in addition with analyzing the necessary conditions for readers coming to any understanding of a text.
