Biography
Hans-Georg Gadamer Hans Georg Gadamer was born in Marburg an der Lahn on February 11, 1900. In 1918 he studied with Richard Hoenigswald at Breslau, and in 1919 he studied with Nicolai Hartmann and the neo-Kantian philosopher Paul Natorp at Marburg. In 1922 he graduated with a thesis on The Essence of Pleasure and Dialogue in Plato . In 1923 he met Husserl and Heidegger at Frieberg. He wrote a second doctoral dissertation under Heidegger, and became a Privatdozent at the University of Marburg. Gadamer once stated that he owed everything to Heidegger, his greatest influence. Heidegger's hermeneutical approach and his idea that philosophy is inseparable from historic and artistic culture would form the basis of Gadamer's philosophy. In 1937 Gadamer was elected to be a professor of philosophy in Marburg, and in 1939 he moved to a professorship at the University of Leipzig. He took a politically neutral position in the eyes of the occupying Soviet Army, and under the new communist state of East Germany in 1945 became the Rector of Leipzig. In 1947 he moved West to accept a position at the University of Frankfurt-am-Main. In 1949 he succeeded Karl Jaspers as Professor of Philosophy in Heidelberg, and became Professor Emeritus in 1968, continuing to teach there for over 50 years. He has been a visiting professor in universities around the world, enjoying a special relationship with Boston College in the United States. He was known as a sociable and vivacious personality, and remained active until the last year of his life.

Hans-Georg Gadamer: Political Essays
SOAH.01.083
Professor Dr. Wolfgang Drechsler
With the assistance of Rainer Kattel Unless otherwise noted, all classes are in the PA lecture room (236), Wednesdays from 12 to 2 pm This year, we celebrate the 100th birthday of the most eminent living philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer. Gadamer has always emphasized that he is not a political nor „public" philosopher, but he has published some highly interesting essays that can be called political and which explicitly deal with the political-philosophical subjects and phenomena. Moreover, in this class these political essays are carefully read on the basis of Gadamer's work in and on hermeneutics and his highly profound yet still underrated dealing with the Ancient Greek philosophers and their polis theories. Also, to illustrate the Gadamer's way of thinking, two highly interesting videos are shown in the course of the class: first, Gadamer's lecture on the nature of art; second, a biographical and philosophical documentry on Gadamer. All the required reading is available in English translations, which will serve as basis for discussion, as well as in the German original. The class is meant for students of all fields of study interested in political philosophy; it carries credit both in Political Science and in Public Administration. It will be thought in English, the two videos are however translated simultaneuosly into Estonian.

Hans-Georg Gadamer
"I think, then, that the chief task of philosophy is to justify this way of reason and to defend practical and political reason against the domination of technology based science. That is the point of philosophical hermeneutic. It corrects the peculiar falsehood of modern consciousness: the idolatry of scientific method and the anonymous authority of the sciences and it vindicates again the noblest task of the citizen - decision-making according to one's own responsibility - instead of conceding that task to the expert. In this respect, hermeneutic philosophy is the heir of the older tradition of practical philosophy." - Gadamer Links The Hans-Georg Gadamer Home Page

Back to David Vessey's Homepage Gadamer's Hermeneutic Contribution to a Theory of Time-consciousness (forthcoming in the Proceedings of the 2004 World Congress of Philosophy and the Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology) Precis The nature of time-consciousness is one of the central themes of phenomenology, and one that all major phenomenologists have addressed at length, except Hans-Georg Gadamer. I develop Gadamer's account of time-consciousness first by looking at a two essays related to the topic, then turning to his discussion of experience in Truth and Method, and finally by considering to his discussion of the unique temporality of the festival in the essay "The Relevance of the Beautiful." What we find in Gadamer's understanding of time is an emphasis on the epochal structure of time-consciousness. Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics belongs to the phenomenological tradition. What is striking, then, is that one of the central themes in phenomenology, the nature of time-consciousness, receives no sustained treatment in Gadamer's writings. Edmund Husserl called time-consciousness the most fundamental level of consciousness, as any consciousness is consciousness of a temporal object or event. Since an analysis of time-consciousness has played central roles in the writings of Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Paul Ricoeur, Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida, it's fair to say that Gadamer is the only major figure in phenomenology not to address the issue of time at length.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

In this seminar, we will investigate the thought of the contemporary German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer (b. 1900). Gadamer is easily one of the five most important living philosophers, and a strong argument could be made that he is the most significant philosopher alive today. We will be primarily concerned with attempting to understand Gadamer's contributions to the field and school of thought known as "philosophical hermeneutics." Gadamer has spent his life articulating philosophical hermeneutics, and he is its most able proponent.
Hermeneutics is simply the science and the art of Interpretation, and philosophical hermeneutics is just the philosophical investigation of what constitutes valid, legitimate, or correct interpretation. Of course, by describing hermeneutics in this fashion, I have already opened Pandora's box. What do we mean by "legitimate" interpretation? What would count as an illegitimate interpretation? What is the difference between interpretation understood as a science and interpretation understood as an art? How do things like "understanding" and "interpretation" differ in the sciences and in the arts? Gadamer is concerned with all of these questions, and he will give us much to talk about.
