He grew up and studied in Breslau under H¶nigswald, but soon moved back to Marburg to study with the neo-Kantian philosophers Paul Natorp and Nicolai Hartmann. He defended his dissertation in 1922. Shortly thereafter, Gadamer visited Freiburg and began studying with Martin Heidegger , who was then a promising young scholar who had not yet received a professorship. He thus became one of a group of students such as Leo Strauss, Karl L¶with, and Hannah Arendt. He and Heidegger became close, and when Heidegger received a position at Marburg, Gadamer followed him there. It was Heidegger's influence that gave Gadamer's thought its distinctive cast and led him away from the earlier neo-Kantian influences of Natorp and Hartmann. Gadamer habilitated in 1929 and spent most of the early 1930s lecturing in Marburg. Unlike

Philosophische Rundschau , but his main philosophical impact was not felt until the publication of Truth and Method Gadamer's first academic appointment was to a junior position in Marburg in 1928, finally achieving a lower-level professorship there in 1937. In the meantime, from 1934-35, Gadamer held a temporary professorship at Kiel, and then, in 1939, took up the Directorship of the Philosophical Institute at the University of Leipzig, becoming Dean of the Faculty in 1945, and Rector in 1946, before returning to teaching and research at Frankfurt-am-Main in 1947. In 1949, he succeeded Karl Jaspers at Heidelberg, officially retiring (becoming Professor Emeritus) in 1968. Following his retirement, he traveled extensively, spending considerable time in North America, where he was a visitor at a number of institutions and developed an especially close and regular association with Boston College in Massachusetts.

Truth and Method
by Hans-Georg Gadamer , Joel C. Weinsheimer (Editor), Donald G. Marshall (Editor). A newly revised edition of the classic work of philosophy and criticism. Incorporates numerous corrections.
“No one interested in hermeneutics and historical understanding can justify neglecting Wahrheit und Methode . Gadamer not only reinterprets the history of modern hermeneutics, but he offers his own phenomenology of understanding.... His is our century’s most creative and ambitious attempt to exorcise the demon of historicism.”— Journal of the American Academy of Religion
“The most ambitious theoretical justification of knowledge in the human sciences to appear in recent years. The book’s impact as a thoroughgoing discussion of modern historicism has already been felt in the disciplines of aesthetics, law, theology, and philosophy.”—

Philosophical Hermeneutics (1976) Reason in the Age of Science (1983) The Idea of the Good (1986) The Relevance of the Beautiful (1986) Biography: Hans-Georg Gadamer's primary interest was hermeneutics - the study of the meaning of a text. According to Gadamer, what a text means depends most fundamentally upon two things: the historical situations of the author and that of the interpreter or reader. This is an "existential encounter" between two perspectives and two sets of expectations, something which makes any sort of interpretation possible in the first place. Reading and interpreting is not simply a matter of becoming immersed in a text; rather, it also involves a great deal of self-reflection and growing awareness of one's own mind and situation. Because of this, every reading becomes grounded in a unique context - after all, even though the author remains the same, every reader is unique. Thus, no single reading can be claimed as a definitive or final interpretation of the text and the result is a "virtual dialogue" that goes on for as long as there are books and readers.
