Frege on Truth Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege Gottlob Frege
Logician Germany
Frege was the father of modern mathematical logic. In 1879 he published Concept-notation, a work that included a formal language which was able to express generality through the quantifier-variable notation. This work also set forth a version of second order quantificational logic whcih he used to develop a logical definition for the ancestral of a relation. He was incredibly influential on the later works of Wittgenstein, Russell, George Boole, and Ernst Schroeder.
TRUTH "When entering upon the study of a science, we need to have some idea, if only a provisional one, of its nature. We want to have in sight a goal to strive towards; we want some point to aim at that will guide our steps in the right direction. The word `true' can be used to indicate such a goal for logic, just as can `good' for ethics and `beautiful' for aesthetics. Of course all the sciences have truth as their goal, but logic is concerned with the predicate `true' in a quite special way, namely in a way analogous to that in which physics has to do with the predicates `heavy' and `warm' or chemistry with the predicates `acid' and `alkaline'. There is, however, the difference that these sciences have to take into account other properties besides these we have mentioned, and that there is no one property by which their nature is so completely characterized as logic is by the word `true'. This dissertation is a close study of the Frege-Hilbert dispute over the foundations of geometry. The dispute has been the subject of active debate recently, with opinion divided as to the merits of Frege's position. In this dissertation I aim at a comprehensive assessment of Frege's position, its motivations, and its major consequences. I find that: (1) Frege's objections to Hilbert's Foundations of Geometry do not represent a mere misunderstanding of Hilbert's work, but stem from considerations of serious philosophical interest; (2) The same considerations that motivated Frege's objections suggest a conception of geometry-and a reading of the history of geometry-radically different from Hilbert's; (3) That conception of geometry-and reading of the history of geometry-are not obviously wrong, and indeed merit further investigation; (4) Part of Frege's objection to Hilbert's Foundations is that he gives no philosophical analysis of geometry, analogous to Frege's analysis of number in

TRUTH IN LOGIC
Overview
A whistle-stop tour through modern logic and its philosophies. Read this section to discount any simple opposition of fact (science, mathematics and logic) to fiction (art and literature). Not only is logic difficult, fascinating and (in its further reaches) contentious, but it seems ultimately to depend on some human sense of rightness: perhaps not so different from poetry in the end.
Introduction: What is Logic?
Though literature is commonly thought to tell some kind of truth, it is surely not one comparable to logic. A time-honoured example: Socrates is a man All men are mortal Therefore Socrates is mortal. Given the premises, we intuitively grasp the conclusion as true. How could it be otherwise? It offends some sense of rightness to deny it, just as we cannot assert that something is at once the case and not the case, p and not-p. But what is this intuitive sense? Broadly, there are four views.

Frege formulated two distinguished formal systems and used these systems in his attempt both to express certain basic concepts of mathematics precisely and to derive certain mathematical laws from the laws of logic. In his Begriffsschrift of 1879, he developed a second-order predicate calculus and used it both to define interesting mathematical concepts and to state and prove mathematically interesting propositions. However, in his Grundgesetze der Arithmetik Grundgesetze is widely known, it is not very well known that a deep theoretical accomplishment can be extracted from his work. The Grundgesetze F and G , the number of F -things is equal to the number G -things if and only if there is a one-to-one correspondence between the F -things and the G -things. In the Grundgesetze
