21. Comparing Frege And Russell

Comparing Frege and Russell KENT BACH
Frege's and Russell's views are obviously different, but because of certain superficial similarities in how they handle certain famous puzzles about proper names, they are often assimilated. Where proper names are concerned, both Frege and Russell are often described together as "descriptivists." But their views are fundamentally different. To see that, let's look at the puzzle of names without bearers, as it arises in the context of Mill's purely referential theory of proper names, aka the 'Fido'-Fido theory. An obvious problem with this simple view is that if the role of names were simply to refer to their bearers, names without bearers would be meaningless. Yet names without bearers seem perfectly meaningful and sentences in which they occur seem to express propositions. Otherwise, how could a sentence like 'Santa Claus does not exist' be not only meaningful but true? Descriptivism about proper names avoids this problem, as well as Frege's two famous puzzles (about the informativeness of identity statements and about failure of substitution in indirect quotation and attitude reports). Descriptivism is often referred to as the "Frege-Russell view." However, their views were quite different. I'll call Frege's view "sense" descriptivism and Russell's view "abbreviational" descriptivism. Let's take up Russell's view first, although it came second.

German mathematician who developed a set of logic symbols. Using the theory of sets, he defined the cardinal numbers in Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik (1884). The cardinal number of a given class is the class of all classes that are similar (can be placed in a one-to-one correspondence) to the given class. In Grundgesetze der Arithmetik (2 vols., 1893 and 1903), Frege began attempting to build up mathematics from arithmetic and symbolic logic on a rigorous and contradiction-free basis. When the second volume was in the process of being printed, Russell pointed out a paradox in Frege's work. The paradox, known as Russell's paradox is the question "is the class of all classes that are not members of itself a member of itself or not?" The question leads to a contradiction and cannot be resolved. Frege was thus forced to admit that the foundation of his reasoning was worthless. As he stated at the end of his work, "A scientist can hardly encounter anything more undesirable than to have the foundation collapse just as the work is finished. I was put in this position by a letter from Mr. Bertrand Russell when the work was almost through the press" (Bell 1986, p. 576). Russell (Bertrand)

Gottlob Frege on Being, Existence and Truth
BEING "One of Frege's main semantic principles, is however, missing in Dummett's book, [ Frege: philosophy of language ] and it is has been ignored by most Frege scholars. That principle is the thesis concerning the ambiguity of the word 'is'. Angelelli come close to attending to it when he makes some remarks on identity and predication, and Matthias Schirn puts special emphasis on the role of the thesis in Frege's work. However, the great majority of Frege scholars have neglected the ambiguity doctrine, even when they have commented on each of the allegedly different meanings of 'is' separately. This is strange in view of the fact that it was Frege and Russell who proposed the thesis and established it as one of the basic ingredients of modern logic. They have in fact been followed by most philosophers. For instance, in the Tractatus Ludwig Wittgenstein emphasizes the ambiguity of the verb 'to be' and stresses the importance of constructing a language which prevents confusions between the different meanings of 'is'. Wittgenstein also remarks that Frege's and Russell's conceptual notation: is such a language although it does not succeed in excluding all mistakes ( Tractatus , 3.323 - 3.325). This work sets out to show that a large part of Frege's philosophy is an attempt to make us realize the importance of keeping the different meanings of 'is' apart and to catch the philosophical mistakes brought about our failure to see the ambiguity.

Gottlob Frege
Gottlob Frege (b. 1848, d. 1925) was a German mathematician, logician, and philosopher who worked at the University of Jena. Frege essentially recreated the discipline of logic by constructing the first `predicate calculus'. In this calculus, Frege developed a new analysis of atomic and quantified statements and formalized the notion of a `proof' in terms that are still accepted today. Frege then demonstrated that one could use this calculus to resolve theoretical mathematical statements in terms of simpler logical and mathematical notions. One of the axioms that Frege later adopted for his system, in the attempt to derive significant parts of mathematics from logic, proved to be inconsistent. Nevertheless, his definitions (of the predecessor relation and of the concept of natural number ) and methods (for deriving the axioms of number theory) were insightful and constituted a significant advance. To ground his views about the relationship of logic and mathematics, Frege conceived a comprehensive philosophy of language that many philosophers still find insightful. However, his lifelong project, of showing that mathematics was reducible to logic, was not successful.
