Desiderius Erasmus Biography (originally Gerrit Gerritszoon
Desiderius Erasmus, Dutch humanist. Portrait by Hans Holbein (the Younger). (Art Renewal Center). Humanist, born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. After six years in an Augustinian monastery, he became private secretary to the Bishop of Cambrai, and a priest (1492). He went to Paris, where he lived as a teacher, then moved to England in 1498, and became professor of divinity and of Greek at Cambridge. Here he wrote his satire, Encomium moriae (1509, The Praise of Folly). After 1514 he lived alternately in Basel and England, then in Louvain (1517–21). His masterpiece, Colloquia , appeared in 1519, an audacious handling of Church abuses. He also made the first translation of the Greek New Testament into English (1516) and edited the works of St Jerome (1519). In 1521 he left Louvain, and lived mainly in Basel, where he was engaged in continual controversy, but enjoyed great fame and respect in his later years.

" Fortune favours the fool. " INTRODUCTION to Desiderius Erasmus' In Praise of Folly
Gerrit Gerritzoons was born in Gouda (near Rotterdam), probably in October 1466. After both his parents died in the plague of 1483, he followed his father's profession and became a priest. Quick-witted and witty, he was befriended by the Bishop of Cambrai and sent to Paris to study. But he soon came to despise the nit-picking 'scholastic' teachings, acquired the pseudonym of Desiderius Erasmus and took to instructing the sons of nobles, wandering Europe and earning the friendship of the continents leading scholars. His first visit to England in brought him into contact with Thomas More, John Colet, Henry VIII and the new rational anti-clericalism of which he is now considered the leading light. THE VERY SQUASHED VERSION ABOUT THIS SQUASHED VERSION
This condensed edition of 2,800 words is paraphrased and adapted from the original 36,800 words of the 1668 translation by John Wilson.

Early Modern Philosophy
Desiderius Erasmus
born Oct. 27, 1469, Rotterdam, Holland [now in The Netherlands]
died July 12, 1536, Basel, Switzerland humanist who was the greatest scholar of the northern Renaissance, the first editor of the New Testament, and also an important figure in patristics and classical literature. Using the philological methods pioneered by Italian humanists, Erasmus helped lay the groundwork for the historical-critical study of the past, especially in his studies of the Greek New Testament and the Church Fathers. His educational writings contributed to the replacement of the older scholastic curriculum by the new humanist emphasis on the classics. By criticizing ecclesiastical abuses, while pointing to a better age in the distant past, he encouraged the growing urge for reform, which found expression both in the Protestant Reformation and in the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Finally, his independent stance in an age of fierce confessional controversy—rejecting both Luther's doctrine of predestination and the powers that were claimed for the papacy—made him a target of suspicion for loyal partisans on both sides and a beacon for those who valued liberty more than orthodoxy. Early life and career Erasmus was the second illegitimate son of Roger Gerard, a priest, and Margaret, a physician's daughter. He advanced as far as the third-highest class at the chapter school of St. Lebuin's in Deventer. One of his teachers, Jan Synthen, was a humanist, as was the headmaster, Alexander Hegius. The schoolboy Erasmus was clever enough to write classical Latin verse that impresses a modern reader as cosmopolitan.

20 Aug 2007 21:31 If this wasn't Yet Another Inadequate Placeholder, I would say something about the pivotal role of Erasmus in many of the developments that shaped the modern world: the Renaissance "revival" (really, transmutation) of classical learning in northern and western Europe; the Reformation; the beginnings of ideals of toleration; independent intellectuals reaching an audience through mass media such as printed books; and advanced textual scholarship. (Indeed, I could devote pages to the importance of textual scholarship alone.) But this is just an inadequate placeholder, so I won't. See also: Early Modern Europe
