Desiderius Erasmus: The Praise of Folly ( Moriae Encomium
translated by John Wilson PREFACE Erasmus of Rotterdam to his Friend Thomas More, Health: From the country, the 5th of the Ides of June.
ORATION: An Oration of Feigned Matter, spoken by Folly in her own Person But if you ask me why I appear before you in this strange dress, be pleased to lend me your ears, and I'll tell you; not those ears, I mean, you carry to church, but abroad with you, such as you are wont to prick up to jugglers, fools, and buffoons, and such as our friend Midas once gave to Pan. For I am disposed awhile to play the sophist with you; not of their sort who nowadays boozle young men's heads with certain empty notions and curious trifles, yet teach them nothing but a more than womanish obstinacy of scolding: but I'll imitate those ancients who, that they might the better avoid that infamous appellation of sophi or wise, chose rather to be called sophists. Their business was to celebrate the praises of the gods and valiant men. And the like encomium shall you hear from me, but neither of Hercules nor Solon, but my own dear self, that is to say, Folly: Nor do I esteem a rush that call it a foolish and insolent thing to praise one's self. Be it as foolish as they would make it, so they confess it proper: and what can be more than that Folly be her own trumpet? For who can set me out better than myself, unless perhaps I could be better known to another than to myself? Though yet I think it somewhat more modest than the general practice of our nobles and wise men who, throwing away all shame, hire some flattering orator or lying poet from whose mouth they may hear their praises, that is to say, mere lies; and yet, composing themselves with a seeming modesty, spread out their peacock's plumes and erect their crests, while this impudent flatterer equals a man of nothing to the gods and proposes him as an absolute pattern of all virtue that's wholly a stranger to it, sets out a pitiful jay in other's feathers, washes the blackamoor white, and lastly swells a gnat to an elephant.

DESIDERIUS ERASMUS
About 1484 Erasmus' father died, leaving him and an elder brother Peter, both born out of wedlock, to the care of guardians, their mother having died shortly before. Erasmus was eager to go to a university, but the guardians, acting under a perhaps genuine enthusiasm for the religious life, sent the boys to another school at Hertogenbosch; and when they returned after two or three years, prevailed on them to enter monasteries. Peter went to Sion, near Delft; Erasmus after prolonged reluctance became an Augustinian canon in St Gregory's at Steyn, a house of the same Chapter near Gouda. There he found little religion and less refinement; but no serious difficulty seems to have been made about his reading the classics and the Fathers with his friends to his heart's content. The monastery once entered, there was no drawing back; and Erasmus passed through the various stages which culminated in his ordination as priest on the 25th of April 1492.

Life
Print this section Erasmus was born in Rotterdam, the illegitimate son of a priest and a physician's daughter. He was educated in strict monastic schools in Deventer and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and, after his father's death, he became an Augustinian canon, or member of the order, at Steyn. He was ordained a priest in 1492 and, while employed by the bishop of Cambrai, studied Scholastic philosophy and Greek at the University of Paris. Finding religious life distasteful, he sought secular employment, and he later received papal dispensation to live and dress as a secular scholar.

Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536)

This drawing is Hans Holbien's Portrait of Erasmus, which he drew in a margin of Frobien's copy of the Praise of Folly. Erasmus, when he visited Frobien, saw the drawing and wrote above it that if he were as handsome as Holbien depicted, then he should not be wanting for a wife. Holbien also painted a more formal and involved portrait of Erasmus , again at his desk. did an engraving along the same lines that Erasmus was not very impressed with at all. Erasmus wrote a friend that the engraving looked nothing like him. This might be explained, he noted, by the fact that the engraving was done in 1526 from a sketch

Apothegms are, in history, the same as the pearls in the sand, or the gold in the mine.
Apothegms

As a looking-glass, if it is a true one, faithfully represents the face of him that looks in it, so a wife ought to fashion herself to the affection of her husband, not to be cheerful when he is sad, nor sad when he is cheerful.
Matrimony
As Plato entertained some friends in a room where there was a couch richly ornamented, Diogenes came in very dirty, as usual, and getting upon the couch, and trampling on it, said, "I trample upon the pride of Plato." Plato mildly answered, "But with greater pride, Diogenes!" Pride Charity resembleth fire, which inflameth all things it toucheth. Charity Experience is the common schoolhouse of fools and ill men. Men of wit and honesty be otherwise instructed. Experience Great abundance of riches cannot be gathered and kept by any man without sin.

Erasmus
In considering the experiences of Linacre and Colet, the great scholar Erasmus Erasmus , a.k.a. Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam , (October 27, 1466 - July 12, 1536) was a Dutch humanist and theologian. He was born Geert Geertsen in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Erasmus died in 1536 in Basel, Switzerland. One of the most famous and amusing quotes from the noted scholar and translator Erasmus was, "When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes."
The Early Life of Erasmus
Information as to his family and early life comes from a few meager accounts written or suggested by himself at a somewhat advanced age and from many but vague references in his writings at all periods of his life. He was doubtless born out of wedlock, well cared for by his parents till their early death, and then given the best education open to a young man of his day in a series of monastic or semi-monastic schools. All this early education is made by him in the light of later experience to appear like one long conspiracy to force him into the monastic life. He was admitted to the priesthood and took the monastic vows at about the age of twenty-five, but there is no record that he ever exercised the priestly functions, and monasticism was one of the chief objects of his attack in his lifelong assault upon the evils of the Church.
