Friederich Engels:
Industrial Manchester, 1844
Manchester, in South-east Lancashire rapidly rose from obscurity to become the premier center of cotton manufacture in England. This was largely due to geography. Its famously damp climate was better for cotton manufacture than the drier climate of the older eastern English cloth manufacture centers. It was close to the Atlantic port of Liverpoll (and was eventually connect by one of the earliest rail tracks, as well as an Ocean ship capable canal - although thirty miles inland, it was long a major port). It was also close to power sources - first the water power of the Pennine mountain chain, and later the coal mines of central Lancashire. As a result, Manchester became perhaps the first modern industrial city. Friedricj Engels' father was a German manufacturer and Engels worked as his agent in his father's Manchester factory. As a result he combined both real experience of the city, with a strong social conscience. The resul was his The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844.

Friedrich Engels
Born in Barmen in Germany in 1820, the son of a textile manufacturer, Friedrich Engels, the German Communist leader, was to become famous for his friendship and collaboration with Karl Marx in the writing of "Das Capital" - the first communist publication.
Engels was sent to Manchester by his father in 1842 as agent for a new Manchester partnership, Ermen and Engels, of Pendleton in Salford. The company also had office premises in 5 Newmarket Buildings, Market Street in Manchester, which later moved to offices at Southgate Street, off Deansgate, behind present day Kendals Department Store.
Engels had met Marx on his journey to England, and struck up a close and lasting friendship, sacrificing much of his own political career in order to support Marx in London. While in Manchester, Engels became associated with the Chartist Movement, and contributed many articles in support of the movement to local newspapers and publications. He was also interested in the social reforms of Robert Owen.

Marx and Engels on Spiritualism and Theosophy
by Herman A.O. de Tollenaere English home page Friedrich Engels (1820-1895)
There are several ways to look at relationships (friendly or unfriendly relationships) between occultism and political tendencies, such as Marxism. In this regard, Bruce Campbell has observed that "Esoteric and mystical sources have been identified as part of the intellectual background for Hegelian and Marxist thought." He did not elaborate on this observation, however, and neither will we. The statement must relate to indirect influence of pre-1800 ideas via Hegel. This concerns, however, an earlier age than the subject of this article. Nor does this article consider subjects later in history, like reciprocal opinions of twentieth century communists and theosophists in such countries as India and Sri Lanka; though that is part of wider research in which I am now involved. This article is specifically about Karl Marx' (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels' (1820-1895) views on spiritualism and theosophy. They both embarked on their political careers in the 1840's, in the Communist League, an international organization, in which migrant German workers in England were heavily represented. Nineteenth century spiritualism was a widespread, but not well organized movement. As is well-known, it began with the

Career Best known as the founder of international communism, he was a philosopher, social scientist and one of the major economists of his or any other age. Already deeply involved in socialist politics, his Communist Manifesto may be described as the most important political pamphlet of the nineteenth century. His life was spent in London, writing and organising, the former taking increasing precedence over the latter. The comprehensiveness of his studies and the difficulties of his personal circumstances meant that many of his major projects remained unfinished at his death. His masterpiece Das Kapital is only partially complete; the first volume appeared during his lifetime; and further material was edited by Engels. Much other material has been published posthumously including the important

Friedrich Engels (1820 - 1895)
Friedrich Engels (1820 - 1895) Friedrich Engels (28. November 1820 - 5. August 1895) was a German Socialist philosopher and the co-founder of modern Communist theory with Karl Marx . In 1848, they published The Communist Manifesto together. Engels edited several volumes of Das Kapital (Capital: A Critique of Political Economy) after Marx's death.
Engels was born in Barmen-Elberfeld (now Wuppertal), the eldest son of a successful German textile industrialist. As a young man, his father sent him to England to help manage his cotton-factory in Manchester. Shocked by the widespread poverty in the city, he began writing an account which was published in 1845 as Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844.
In the same year, Engels began contributing to a journal called the Franco-German Annals which was edited and published by Karl Marx in Paris. After their first meeting in person, it turned out that both shared the same views on capitalism and hence they decided to work more closely together. After Marx was deported from France in January of 1845, they decided to move to Belgium, which permitted a greater freedom of expression than other countries in Europe.

ON THE HISTORY OF EARLY CHRISTIANITY
by
FREDERICK ENGELS
From Die Neue Zeit Vol. 1, 1894-95, pp. 4-13 and 36-43
I
T If, therefore, Prof. Anton Menger wonders in his Right to the Full Product of Labour why, with the enormous concentration of landownership under the Roman emperors and the boundless sufferings of the working class of the time, which was composed almost exclusively of slaves, "socialism did not follow the overthrow of the Roman Empire in the West," it is because he cannot see that this "socialism" did in fact, as far as it was possible at the time, exist and even became dominant in Christianity. Only this Christianity, as was bound to be the case in the historic conditions, did not want to accomplish the social transformation in this world, but beyond it, in heaven, in eternal life after death, in the impending "millennium." The parallel between the two historic phenomena forces itself upon our attention as early as the Middle Ages in the first risings of the oppressed peasants and particularly of the town plebeians. These risings, like all mass movements of the Middle Ages, were bound to wear the mask of religion and appeared as the restoration of early Christianity from spreading degeneration
