In 1844 Engels began contributing to a radical journal called Franco-German Annals that was being edited by Karl Marx in Paris. Later that year Engels met Marx and the two men became close friends. Engels shared Marx's views on capitalism and after their first meeting he wrote that there was virtually "complete agreement in all theoretical fields". Marx and Engels decided to work together. It was a good partnership, whereas Marx was at his best when dealing with difficult abstract concepts, Engels had the ability to write for a mass audience.

A Biography of Friedrich Engels
Friedrich Engels was born in 1820 in Barmen, Germany. His father was a wealthy man with interests in a textile business in England. This fact as well as his association with Karl Marx would dominate his existence. The father wished the son to follow in his footsteps and so sent him to clerk for three years at the manufacturing town of Bremen. Because of this, Engels never really had a University Education. Yet even at this stage (about 20 years old) he was already becoming active in radical causes and writing pamphlets on philosophy and economics. Engels would meet Marx in 1842 in Cologne and their friendship would flower in Paris in 1844. Engels, who was a thinker in his own right, thought Marx the more original, and soon hitched his intellectual wagon to Marx's star. In the early 1840s he spent a few years in England working as a manager at one of his father's mills. It was this experience that produced his first prominent work, "The Condition of the Working Class in England" published in 1844. In 1847 Marx was asked to write a document proclaiming the principles of communism for "The Communist League". Engels collaborated and helped write the now famous Communist Manifesto. In 1850 Engels returned to England to run the factory of which he was now part owner. He made the decision to do this for manifold reasons not the least of which was to help the poverty stricken Marx who had lately been driven from Brussels for his revolutionary activity. Marx would move to London to do research for his book, "Das Kapital" at the British Museum, while Engels supported him both financially and intellectually.

  • Political economy came into being as a natural result of the expansion of trade, and with its appearance elementary, unscientific huckstering was replaced by a developed system of licensed fraud, an entire science of enrichment.
    • Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy There is no country in Europe which does not have in some corner or other one or several ruined fragments of peoples, the remnant of a former population that was suppressed and held in bondage by the nation which later became the main vehicle of historical development. These relics of a nation mercilessly trampled under foot in the course of history, as Hegel says, these residual fragments of peoples always become fanatical standard-bearers of counter-revolution and remain so until their complete extirpation or loss of their national character, just as their whole existence in general is itself a protest against a great historical revolution.

REFORMERS: Friedrich Engels and Manchester's slums THE NAME of Friedrich Engels will be associated for ever with that of Karl Marx, the founder of Marxism. But his detailed study of the living conditions of Manchester's poor was equally significant Born into a mill-owning family in the textile town of Barmen in Germany in 1820, Engels (whose picture on this page was taken as early as 1845) had already earned a reputation as a radical journalist before his father - worried by his politics - despatched him to England in 1842 to look after the family's business interests and stay out of trouble. By day, Engels was a diligent businessman, representing his father at the Victoria Mill of Ermen and Engels at Weaste, in Salford. But by night he became a social investigator, prowling the mean, dangerous streets of Manchester's slum areas gathering material for what was to become his classic book, The Condition of the Working Class in England. His first stay in the city lasted only two years, but that was long enough for him to gather a mass of information on the appalling situation of Manchester's poor slum dwellers. In 1844, he returned home to finish his book. The volume was published in Germany in 1845 but was not made available in an English translation until 47 years later, by which time it might have been expected to have lost much of its impact.

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels: The Communist Manifesto
Although it at first had little or no impact on the widespread and varied revolutionary movements of the mid-19th century Europe, the Communist Manifesto Manifesto was originally issued in several languages, including this English version. What kinds of changes does Marx say have been characteristic of the bourgeois era? Prologue A specter is haunting Europethe specter of communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this specter: Pope and Czar, Metternich and Guizot, (1) French Radicals and German police spies. Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as communistic by its opponents in power? Where the Opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of communism, against the more advanced opposition part-ies, as well as against its reactionary adversaries? Two things result from this fact: I. Communism is already acknowledged by all European powers to be itself a power. II. It is high time that Communists should openly, in the face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the specter of communism with
