Mircea Eliade ( 1907-1986) B. 9 March 1907 in Bucharest (Romania), d. April 1986 in Chicago. At 14 he published his first article How I discovered the philosopher's stone. 1928-1932: prepared in India his dissertation which became : Yoga, Immortality And Freedom. 1945: wrote in Romanian his Prolegomena to the History of Religions , published 1949 in French under the title: Traité d'Histoire des Religions. 1957: Professor of the History of Religions, University of Chicago. He attended regularly the Eranos seminars (founded by C.G. Jung) in Ascona, Switzerland (see Eranos-Jahrbuch Eliade has first studied the non-western cultures and their otherness. He insists on what he calls the "irreductibility" of the religious phenomenon (i.e that the religious phenomenon cannot be reduced to any other else), and on the " irrecognoscibility' of the holy (i.e that the holy cannot be recognized as such at first sight). Every manifestation or self-disclosure of the holy is the manifestation of something totally different, of a reality which is not belonging to this world, in objects which are belonging to the secular world. So the man in whom the holy manifests itself - shaman, priest - remains a man like other men. But in the eyes of the religious man ( homo religiosus ), this immediate reality of the being or the object in which the holy is revealing itself is transmuted at the contact of the supernatural reality. sui generis nature of religion, thereby requiring distinct methods for its study and distinct institutional locations for carrying out this research. Because of the unique character of religious phenomena (each being the site where " the Sacred " manifests itself), along with his views that religion was at its essence concerned with establishing meaning in otherwise potentially meaningless human lives and societies, Eliade was also known for his advocacy of what he termed a total hermeneutics (that is, a complete interpretive science), what he also called the New Humanism; the historian of religions, by studying symbolic expressions of what he held to be deeply meaningful existential situations common to all peoples, was able to re-experience in their own livesand thereby become the interpreters of and guardians forthe meaning that these symbols, narratives, and practices once had for archaic peoples long ago. Apart from a tremendously impressive amount of writing and editing (including his role, toward the end of his life, as the editor-in-chief of what has become the field's primary reference work, The Encyclopedia of Religion [1987]), Eliade is also known today for the manner in which, after his death in 1986, his life (some of its details were made public through his four published volumes of journals and his two volume autobiography) and his extensive body of work have generated a substantial body of critical secondary literature, concerned with re-examining his arguments in favor of religion's

(Though a comma separates my name from his in my title, I sometimes get letters from abroad with the comma misplaced, addressed to "Wendy Doniger Mircea Eliade, Professor of the History of Religions.") And in fact I do work under his bright shadow in many ways, as do most of the people in the field of the history of religions, whether or not they acknowledge their debt. I am personally indebted to him for creating my career, transforming me from an ugly duckling of a Sanskritist into a swan-like historian of religions; he read my Harvard (Sanskrit) Ph.D. dissertation in 1968, published two chapters of it in his Chicago journal ( History of Religions ) in 1969, brought me to Chicago as a full professor in 1978, and the rest is, if not history, at least history of religions. I was at his side when he died in 1986; unable to watch his face, I watched the screen by his hospital bed, watched the wavy lines straighten out one by one and then vanish one by one until nothing remained on the screen but the words "Mircea Eliade," and then the words disappeared too.

Propeller Conversations: Francis Ford Coppola
By James Marcus
At age 65, Francis Ford Coppola is an elder statesman of American film, a notably successful producer of other people's movies (including those of his daughter, Sofia ), and a pretty damn good vintner to boot. For the last decade, however, he has made no movies of his own. With Youth Without Youth , an idiosyncratic production shot on the fly in Romania, Coppola finally breaks this cinematic silence. In early December, he sat down to discuss the new film with James Marcus, who was himself aided and abetted by the Propeller community. The conversation began with a question about the genesis of Youth Without Youth , which is loosely based on a novella by the Romanian philosopher and religious scholar Mircea Eliade
Coppola : It turns out that Eliade used to write these little fablesmaybe for fun, maybe to play around with some of the ideas that were derived from his studies. And when I first read Youth Without Youth , it was like a Twilight Zone thing. Every two pages, something extraordinary would happen to this man. He's hit by lightning. When he wakes up, it turns out that he's young again, and also smarter. Then he turns into two personalities, and one seems to be sending messages about the future of the human species. I said to myself, this is the craziest story I ever read! And I started to become really excited about it: I could make this movie, I could go to Romania. Just bring a crew there, not spend a lot of money.

The creation of the World being the Eliade Mircea Eliade understood all myths to be creation/cosmogonic myths. The purpose of myth was to return to the time before time , before the gods or tribal ancestors (supernatural beings) created the world. This pre-cosmic state is sacred time, and according to Eliade it is the aim of the religious person to go beyond the natural/profane world of space and time (through ritual or storytelling) and enter into the sacred space of eternal time, thereby experiencing the primal power in the form of a hierophany (Greek: hiero phainein myth I do see all forms of storytelling (both modern and traditional) as having the mythic power to transport us outside of ourselves, thereby temporarily suspending every day reality, regardless of the actual theme.

Known primarily as an eminent historian of religions, Eliade was born in Rumania but now lives in the United States. In addition to numerous books and treatises on religious history, philosophy, yoga, and mysticism, he has written several well-respected novels of ideas. According to Claude Mauriac, Eliade is torn between fantasy and scholarship; however, a concern with contours of time and space and the effect of myth on each unifies his scholarly and creative writings. Each of the major religions and philosophies of the world speaks, often in symbolic terms, about states of consciousness other than those of our ordinary experience. According to these teachings, we have the potential to experience qualitatively different levels of perception, awareness, and orientation toward ourselves, others, and the universe. The first two of these distinct realms of existence-ordinary sleep and ordinary waking consciousness-constitute the "normal" human condition, our customary experience. "Higher" states of being correlate with finer, more subtle levels of reality.

He spoke 8 languages fluently (Romanian, French, German, Italian, English, Hebrew, Persian and Sanskrit).
In 1928, at the University of Bucharest, he met Emile Cioran and Eugène Ionesco, and the three became lifelong friends. He has been criticized for alleged connections in his youth with Garda de Fier (The Iron Guard), an extreme-right-wing political organization. However, it is not at all clear that the personal associations of his youth had any great influence on his scholarly production, which began after a long period of study in India.

    Mircea Eliade - La tiganci
Mircea Eliade recunoºtea "încã din adolescenþã mi-a plãcut sã scriu nuvele, povestiri ºi chiar nuvele fantastice".
