Champion Of Mary's Immaculate Conception Blessed John Duns Scotus by Brother John M. Samaha, S.M. The year 2004 marks the sesquicentennial of the dogmatic definition of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854. To celebrate the centenary of the infallible proclamation of this dogma of faith, Pope Pius XII, a great apostle of Mary, declared 1954 a Marian Year, the first. In 1858 Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, France. When Bernadette asked the beautiful lady who she was, Mary identified herself in these words: "I am the Immaculate Conception." This happened four years after the solemn definition. For the centenary of that miraculous event, the Marian-minded Pope Pius XII pronounced 1958 the Lourdes Year. Though belief in Mary's Immaculate Conception never wavered among the truly faithful, for centuries theologians were at a loss to explain adequately and with satisfactory doctrinal clarity this privilege accorded the Mother of Christ. Then in "the greatest of centuries" a humble and brilliant friar brought resolution to this knotty question: How was Mary, who was like all human beings in need of redemption, conceived without sin? To the keen and penetrating mind of the thirteenth century Franciscan philosopher and theologian, Blessed John Duns Scotus, all Christendom owes respect and honor. For it was Duns Scotus who

    John Duns Scotus
Theologian Born: Died: 8 November 1308 Birthplace: Duns, Scotland Best known as: Medieval philosopher and founder of Scotism John Duns Scotus was a medieval Christian theologian and philosopher remembered mostly for his defense of the doctrine of Immaculate Conception (that is, that Mary, the mother of Jesus , was free of sin). A member of the Franciscan Order, Scotus taught in Oxford, Paris and Cologne (where he died), embraced Aristotelian philosophy and founded the branch of Scholasticism later called Scotism, a critical response to the teachings of Thomas Aquinas . Called Doctor Subtillis ("The Subtle Doctor"), Scotus upheld the notion of the separate nature of a rational and independent soul, modified the ontological argument put forth by Anselm and defended the primacy of divine will over intellect. Scotus was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

- John Duns Scotus (1265-1308) Introduction
John Duns Scotus a famous Scot? Well, clearly Pope John Paul II thought so when he beatified him in 1993. And he has given his name to a word in the English language - dunce - despite being regarded as one of the greatest of medieval thinkers. Early Years
John was born around 1265, probably in the Berwickshire village of Duns (where there is a statue to him). A suggestion that he came from Maxton in Roxburghshire arose from an 18th century forgery. He joined the Franciscan order in Dumfries in 1281 and at that stage added the town of his birth to his name - a frequent occurrence at a time when surnames were starting to be adopted. He was ordained as a priest ten years later in Northampton, in England. He later studied at Oxford and Paris and then took up a teaching post back at Oxford. Travelling Around
John Duns is known to have been teaching in Paris around 1301 but because he spoke out on behalf of the Pope in a dispute between the Pontiff and the King Philip the Fair of France, he was expelled. He came back later to Paris and was made Doctor of Theology there in 1305. He moved on to Cologne in 1307 and taught there for a year before his death (possibly from a stroke) in 1308, at the age of 43. He was buried in a Franciscan church in Cologne. His Theology
The Dominican friar Thomas Aquinas (1227-1274) exerted a considerable influence on the Catholic church in the 13th century. But John Duns Scotus rejected his teachings, arguing that the individual will predominated over the intellect and that faith was an individual act of will. John Duns differentiated between belief and statements which could be proved by factors other than religion. The result was to create two rival theological camps. The intellectual ability of John Duns and his understanding of the teachings of Aquinas allowed him to be critical of the rival theology. Duns earned the title "Doctor Subtilis" (the Subtle Doctor) because of his ability to construct a complex argument and proof.

Died: 1308 Biography:
John Duns Scotus was a Franciscan theologian and philosopher who became known to many as the "Subtle Doctor." He wrote extensively on topics such as the nature of will, the importance of reason and knowledge, and the necessity of divine revelation in achieving a true understanding of the world. His work became very influential in scholasticism, in particular because he treated theology not as the speculative matter which was common but rather as something which could be approached as a science. He also championed the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. Many other had long opposed this, arguing that if Mary had been conceived without sin, she would not have needed redemption. Scotus, however, made the case that her sinlessness was due to the grace of Christ, the first instance of his redemptive powers. Not everyone, however, treated his work kindly. Many were annoyed by this lengthy explanations of every minor point. Others objected to him on more political grounds - he was, for example, exiled from France for refusing to support King Philip IV in his conflict with Pope Boniface VIII over the taxation of church property.

I would especially draw your attention to Giorgio Pini's discovery of the long-lost Expositio in Metaphysicam , which I did not know about when I wrote the essay for the Companion We know very little with certainty about the details of Scotus's life and the chronology of his writings, and the evidence and arguments used to establish what we do know are sometimes forbiddingly complex. I make no attempt here to lay out all the speculations or even to adjudicate all the controversies. What follows is therefore a partial and inevitably controversial account of Scotus's life and works. It would, I believe, command wide acceptance among students of Scotus; I indicate some points of dispute in the text and offer extensive references for those who wish to explore these matters in more detail. Their strong opposition to the revival of classical studies during the Renaissance led to use of the word "dunce" to mean an uneducated person or a numbskull.

Noel Muscat OFM
Blessed John Duns Scotus (1265/66 – 8 th Ineffabilis Deus of Pope Pius IX (8 th December 1854), of which we are this year celebrating the 150 th anniversary. The theological doctrine of John Duns Scotus regarding the Immaculate Conception is found in Volume XX of the Lectura in Librum Tertium Sententiarum , in the third distincio , first quaestio , which has the title Utrum Beata Virgo fuerit concepta in peccato originali (Regarding whether the Blessed Virgin was conceived in original sin). We now have a critical edition of this quaestio , published by the International Scotistic Commission of the Friars Minor, working at the Pontificium Athenaeum Antonianum in Rome. Our aim is that of providing a simple presentation of the main arguments which the Subtle Doctor proposes as a defence of this unique privilege of the Virgin Mary. Scotus’ Lectura It is in this Christological view of the world and of redemption that Scotus speaks about the Virgin Mary as Mother of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God. She becomes the embodiment of all perfection in creation, freed from sin and from its effects through the saving power of Jesus Christ, the universal Mediator between God and humankind. It was fitting that God would choose a Mother for His Son, who would be totally free form any stain of original and actual sin, in order to become a channel of grace to us all. Having explained in a few words Scotus’ Christological vision of creation and redemption, we can now try to understand how he explains the privilege of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary within this theological context.

John Duns Scotus, on Human Knowledge of God Cognitio Naturalis de Deo Natural Knowledge of God ) is a lecture by John Duns Scotus from his Opus Oxoniense (or Ordinatio , 1298-1304). He provides arguments for and against the proposition that human knowledge of God is possible. The first argument which is provided by Duns Scotus against the proposition that human knowledge of God is possible is that God cannot be perceived by sensory perception. If God cannot be perceived by sensory perception, then knowledge concerning God's attributes may not be possible. The second argument against the proposition that human knowledge of God is possible is similar to the first argument, in that Duns Scotus argues that due to the limitations of human sensory capability, God is imperceptible to the senses, just as many natural phenomena are imperceptible to the senses. A third argument against the proposition that knowledge of God is possible is that infinite being cannot be apprehended by the human intellect. If God is infinite, then human beings may not be capable of knowing God. If it is impossible for the human intellect to know an infinite number of things, then the human intellect may not be capable of comprehending the infinite nature of God. Duns Scotus then approaches the question of whether knowledge of God is possible by asking whether we may attain knowledge of what God is not. He explains that we may deny that a given attribute belongs to God only if that attribute is contradictory to some other attribute which we have already affirmed as belonging to God. Any supposed negation of God thus presupposes, or depends on, a genuine affirmation of God.

Scottish monk, a leading figure in the theological and philosophical system of medieval scholasticism , which attempted to show that Christian doctrine was compatible with the ideas of the Greek philosophers Aristotle and Plato. The church rejected his ideas, and the word dunce is derived from Dunses, a term of ridicule applied to his followers. In the medieval controversy over universals he advocated nominalism , maintaining that classes of things have no independent reality.
