Biography
Gilles Deleuze Empiricism and Subjectivity , on David Hume. In 1956 he married Denise Paul "Fanny" Grandjouan, a translator who specialized in D.H. Lawrence. In 1957 he began teaching history of philosophy at the Sorbonne, and from 1960-64 he was a researcher with the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique. Deleuze held a number of assistant teaching positions in universities over the next ten years, and in 1962 he published Nietzsche and Philosophy . It was during this time that he began a long-standing friendship with Michel Foucault. They met one another at the home of Jules Vuillemin, when Foucault was petitioning to have Deleuze nominated for a position at the University of Clermont-Ferrand. Deleuze taught from 1964-69 at the University of Lyon, then took a position as professor of philosophy at Vincennes at the behest of Foucault. In 1968 Deleuze published his doctoral thesis comprised of a major thesis, Difference and Repetition ), and a minor thesis

Gilles Deleuze's Bergsonian Film Project
Donato Totaro donato@offscreen.com 1999, mars 31
I'll begin with a brief, synoptic overview of Deleuze's cinema project before moving on to a more detailed exposition. The broad sweep of Deleuze's two cinema books, Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image , is to chart a fundamental shift from classical pre-WW2 cinema [movement-image] to post-WW2 cinema [time-image] ( Cinema 1: The Movement-Image . Trans. Hugh Tomlinsom and Barbara Habberjam. 1983. London: The Athlone Press, 1986; Cinema 2: The Time-Image . trans. Hugh Tomlinson and Robert Galeta. London: The Athlone Press, 1989). The former cinema, which finds its archetype in the Hollywood genre film, is dependent on movement and action. Characters in the movement-image are placed in narrative positions where they routinely perceive things, react, and take action in a direct fashion to the events around them. The movement-image is a form of spatialized cinema: time determined and measured by movement. In the time-image, which finds its archetype in the European modernist or art film, characters find themselves in situations where they are unable to act and react in a direct, immediate way, leading to what Deleuze calls a breakdown in the sensor-motor system. The image cut off from sensory-motor links becomes "a pure optical and aural image," and one that "comes into relation with a virtual image, a mental or mirror image" (Gilles Deleuze, "On the Movement-Image," trans. by Martin Joughin

ABSTRACT: In academic philosophy the writings of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari are still treated as curiosities and their importance for philosophical discussions is not recognized. In order to remedy this, I demonstrate how the very concept of philosophy expounded by the two contributes to philosophical thinking at the end of the twentieth century while also providing a possible line of thought for the next millenium. To do this, I first emphasize the influence of Deleuze's thinking, while also indicating the impact Guattari had on him. This account will therefore show Deleuze's attempts before Guattari to concieve of a non-dialectic philosophy of becoming. I will turn to rethink this approach given the influence of Guattari and his anti-psychoanalytic analysis of territorial processes. The result is a conception of philosophical activity as an act of 'becoming minor'. 1. Introduction

Sickness unto life - life and works of philosopher Gilles Deleuze - includes related article on Delueze's television appearance
ArtForum March, 1996 by Didier Eribon I THE SUICIDE OF PHILOSOPHER Gilles Deleuze at the beginning of November, after he had spent many years suffering from a terrible respiratory illness, was a gesture that struck many in France dumb. Deleuze's thought, however resistant to summary, was above all an affirmation of the life force, of the will to life: "One's always writing," as he put it in Pourparler (1990 [Negotiations, 1995]), "to bring something to life, to free life from where it's trapped." While there is something tragically unbearable about the willful death of a philosopher who always, in the final instance, exalted and summoned the forces of life, it would be a mistake to see a contradiction between Deleuze's philosophy and his final, parting gesture.

What is Philosophy?
by Gilles Deleuze , Hugh Tomlinson (Translator), Felix Guattari (Editor).
Deleuze, one of France's leading philosophers, and collaborator Guattari detail their conception of philosophy and discuss their understanding of the relationships between philosophy, science and the arts. They then explore the connection between philosophy and the history of social and cultural developments in the West... Click here to learn more about this book

SOBRE
DELEUZE, GILLES (1925-1995)

Gilles Deleuze I. historical II. logic III. program deutsch ... nadir I. Historical Foucault located the disciplinary societies in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; they reach their height at the outset of the twentieth. They initiate the organization of vast spaces of enclosure. The individual never ceases passing from one closed environment to another, each having its own laws: first the family; then the school ("you are no longer in your family"); then the barracks ("you are no longer at school"); then the factory; from time to time the hospital; possibly the prison, the preeminent instance of the enclosed environment. It's the prison that serves as the analogical model: at the sight of some laborers, the heroine of Rossellini's Europa '51 could exclaim, "I thought I was seeing convicts." Foucault has brilliantly analyzed the ideal project of these environments of enclosure, particularly visible within the factory: to concentrate; to distribute in space; to order in time; to compose a productive force within the dimension of space-time whose effect will be greater than the sum of its component forces. But what Foucault recognized as well was the transience of this model: it succeeded that of the

All quotations from Cinema 1 will be from the Tomlinson-Habberjam translation, unless specifically indicated otherwise. 2. Ibid, pp. 217-8. In the papers my students submit at Paris III I have very often found references to a certain Gilles Deleuze. Intrigued, at one point I went to the closest public library, where I borrowed the two works by this author consecrated to the cinema. The Movement-Image and The Time-Image ... I thought that, in the first volume, I would discover discussions of Renoir (the ballet of characters in Rules of the Game [1939] or The Golden Coach The Time-Image and von Stroheim only in The Movement-Image . Pagnol, Rozier and Leone are entirely forgotten. For Deleuze, movement is not movement, and time - in a less aggressive way, however - is not exactly time.
