Alongside these large works Fels exhibits his distemper paintings on panel. Although they seem to be the formal opposites to his hoarding works - non-representational, intuitive, decidedly apolitical - these organic abstractions are entirely interrelated to Fels. He is inspired by the same emotions and visual cues - color, especially - that inform his sign works. Distemper, a casein derivative, is a traditional medium used in poster painting.

Donald Davidson: "What Metaphors Mean"
Davidson, Donald. 1978. "What Metaphors Mean." In On Metaphor (Ed. Sheldon Sacks). Chicago, Illinois: University of Chicago Press. Summary: Davidson's essay appears to be situated in a philosophical debate concerning what metaphors mean. His essay is very much directed at Max Black, who he signals has opposing views. He begins with his thesis, stating that "metaphors mean what the words, in their most literal interpretation mean, and nothing more" (30). He opposes those who believe that, in addition to the literal sense, it has an additional sense or meaning and lists many, including: Aristotle, Freud, Plato, Lakoff. He suggests that his approach means that metaphors accomplish more than what they're given credit for and what they accomplish is different than what others suggest. His argument is that "metaphors belong exclusively to the domain of use" (31) and that to suggest that they have an additional meaning is to weaken their power. He continues on to address different rules for understanding the meaning of a metaphor, focusing on literal interpretations that include both the original meaning of the word and the extended meaning. Metaphors promote similarities and extensions of word meanings, but they are not arbitrary - they are always based on one of the original meanings. One should compare similes and metaphors in this analysis (36).

Donald Davidson came to Princeton University in 1967 and went to Rockefeller University in New York City from 1970-76, occasionally coming back to teach a seminar at Princeton. During this time he and I talked regularly, ran two conferences, and published two collections of essays. I first met Davidson at the American Philosophical meeting in December 1963 when he presented his paper, “Action, Reasons, and Causes,” a paper which contains the germ of many of the ideas he developed in the following years. I next saw him in the summer of 1965. I was teaching a course at Berkeley that summer. Hearing that Paul Grice was running a weekly seminar at Stanford, Tom Nagel, Barry Stroud, Tom Clark and I drove down to attend. In the seminar, Paul presented an early version of “Logic and Conversation,” with Davidson regularly asking for clarifications, “because otherwise what you say will just go in one ear and out the other.” Various other philosophers were at the seminar, including Michael Dummett, who later presented his own “antirealism” in opposition to Davidson’s “realism.” (However, I believe that at this time the big issue between them was whether Michael would go surfing with Davidson.)

Is Reality Really Real? The Late Philosopher Donald Davidson's Problematic Answer...
Here's an article about an interesting modern theory that purports to "prove" that "reality" is not just an illusion. It's a bit of a complicated appeal to the basis of language, but makes some good points. However, I think there may be a fundamental flaw at the very root of the argument. It still starts from the assumption that the first beliefs have some basis in an objective external reality. On the basis of that the whole structure is then built up. But what if those first few beliefs are actually totally subjective and not based on any common "external" stimuli? Then I think the whole argument falls apart. In other words, you cannot prove that reality is non-illusory by appeal to language and perception because nobody can establish that their perceptions are totally separate from their minds (thus, they cannot prove that what they perceive is truly and perfectly "external" or separate from them). Given that, there is no way for anyone to establish scientifically at least that there is really an external objective reality. At the same time, because it is possible for people have similar experiences and to communicate about a seemingly common shared reality, there is also no way to establish that everything is just "in one mind" or "in my mind" etc. In other words, nobody can prove that what they experience is all only within their mind that there is nothing "external" or "separate." So neither extreme is provable: that there are external things, or that there are not any external things.

  • October 12, 2007 - Land-Ocean Temperature Reading is ready for September
NASA's Land-Ocean combined temperature for the entire planet is 49 aka 14.49C for the month of September, back down to the low of the year. The same low was first reported for both June and July, August was a bit higher at 14.56C. Temperatures are still down from the four hundred year high of 14.89C reached in January. The January peak was not as high as some past highs in our ongoing Interglacial Warm Period. See first chart at link. The 49 is the Centigrade-Index value, which is the same as 14.49 Centigrade or 58.08 F.

The result is action with very little reaction. Believe that this machine works, I have had this machine moving along my driveway on casters.
