  • Amajor figure in contemporary feminist critical theory, Cixous is known for works that analyze and attempt to counter Western culture's traditional concepts of male and female. Cixous is best known for her essay collaboration with Catherine Cl©ment, La jeune n©e The Newly Born Woman ) and her essay "Le rire de la M©duse" (1975; "The Laugh of the Medusa"). Both texts are recognized as being markedly influenced by the writings of Jacques Derrida, the French philosopher and founder of the critical method known as deconstructionism; Michel Foucault, the French philosopher and historian who rejected the theory of human nature and was a proponent of the notion of an ever-changing self; Jacques Lacan, the French psychoanalyst and philosopher who proposed a linguistic theory of the unconscious; and Sigmund Freud, the originator of psychoanalysis. A proponent of ©criture f©minine, or feminine writing, Cixous strives in all of her works to establish a uniquely feminine perspective, both to correct what she and many feminist theorists view as the traditionally masculine character of Western discourse and as a methodology with which to critique that discourse.
    BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Cixous was born in Oran, Algeria, to a French-colonial father and Austro-German mother. Members of her family were Sephardic Jews, and Cixous grew up with a sense of kinship with persecuted groups. Her father, a physician, died when she was eleven, an event some critics suggest informs her writing. In her teens, Cixous read myths, the German Romantics (including Heinrich von Kleist), and English literature, especially the writings of William Shakespeare. Cixous moved to France in her late teens, where she earned an

Feminism Revisited: Helene Cixous and The Newly Born Woman
In The Newly Born Woman, Helene Cixous discusses the masculine structure that has been imposed on women through a study of Ulysses by James Joyce. She proposes a definition of bisexuality to define the feminine and claims that contemporary writing is also of a feminine nature.
The duality of activity and passivity, where woman is always passive, marks all philosophical discourse as an absolute constant. Cixous writes that "either woman is passive or she does not exist." (p 349) She gives the example of Mallarme's tragic dream, where the father is acting even the part of the mother. This is seen throughout literary history - man's torment, the figure of the father, the male desire to be at the origin.
In order to threaten the stability of this masculine structure, Cixous states that it is urgent to question the solidarity between logocentrism and phallocentrism. There is a connection between the philosophical, the literary, and the phallocentric. Bringing to light woman's burial and questioning the existing structure would create a transformation of the functioning of all society. According to Cixous, this transformation is already in the process of happening.
The results of destabilizing the masculine structure are completely unpredictable. Meanwhile there is the certainty that man and
