An Illustrated Story

A SPRING SUNDAY

Sarah Orne Jewett
Alonzo Hallet and his wife had just finished an excellent Sunday morning breakfast and gone into their comfortable sitting-room together. Mr. Hallett had taken up the clumsy Sunday newspaper and then laid it aside with a gesture of disinclination. Mrs. Hallett was standing at the bay window in her handsome black silk dress with a gold chain for discreet decoration; she looked as if she meant to go to church; her smooth hair was dressed with security and care, as if in anticipation of a best bonnet. One of the window sashes was open and the spring breeze was blowing in and ruffling the light locks about her calm, motherly forehead. "Oh, what a lovely morning this is!" she exclaimed wistfully, and then they waited for each other to speak. They had arrived long ago at the complete certainty of such a thing as thought-transference; and Mr. Hallett knew that there was something on his wife's mind. "I don't know 's I want to sit cooped up in that close church all the morning," he announced gruffly. "Seems to me I want to get out-doors and go off somewhere; I've got real spring-feelings, just like a boy. Can't you think of something else, Mary Ann?"

  • The Chapel
The subject matter of the windows in the Chapel was determined at the time the building was built and the windows were installed, some at that time and some later as gifts and memorials. The windows are all treatments of Old Testament subjects. The large window facing south is a Jesse Tree, which is a traditional way of showing Christ's genealogy in the House of David. At the root is Jesse, father of David, and in the round window at the top is Mary, holding the infant Jesus. Solomon is there, to the left of David, along with all of the generations listed in the gospels of Matthew and Luke (Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3).
On the west wall is the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, the four rivers, and all manner of animals and plants. Next to this window is a new addition, a beautiful

    Alonzo Church
Alonzo Church was an American mathematician who was responsible for some of the foundations of theoretical computer science . Born on June 4 in Washington D.C., he attended Princeton University as an undergraduate and continued there, completing his PhD in . He became a professor of mathematics at Princeton in He is best known for the development of the lambda calculus , his paper that showed the existence of an "undecidable problem" in it. This result preempted Alan Turing 's famous work on the halting problem which also demonstrated the existence of a problem unsolvable by mechanical means. Supervising Turing's doctoral thesis, they then showed that the lambda calculus and the Turing machine used in Turing's halting problem were equivalent in capabilities, and subsequently demonstrated a variety of alternative "mechanical processes for computation" had equivalent computational abilities. This resulted in the Church-Turing thesis , which is also known as Church's Thesis and Turing's Thesis as there is dispute about who proposed it first. Church's other doctoral students included Stephen Kleene Church remained a professor of mathematics at Princeton until , when he moved to California. He died in
