THE MYTH OF SCIENCE
Overview
If, as some literary theorists assert, science is a myth, then we need to understand what myths are, and how science could be limited in this way.
Introduction: Ernst Cassirer
Religion, science and art are all pictures of experience, symbolically created to give meaning to life. So thought Ernst Cassirer. They were the emotion-laden, unmediated "language" of experience, which couldn't interrogated for a more primary intellectual meaning. And as to where they came from, the ultimate ground of their representation, one couldn't ask: that was extending everyday attitudes into areas where they didn't belong. Cassirer's thought returned to Kant Galileo believed the world should be understood in mathematical terms alone, not through commonsense notions or sense experiences. Men produce these concepts to verify and correct these mathematical principles, which are objective and real in a conceptual sense. Whence come these concepts? From mind, said Descartes, attempting to make mind an equal partner with God. And these concepts have substance: extended space and time are real things existing independently of us. Objects themselves furnish the simple ideas in which mind conceives them, said Locke.

This dissertation takes as its starting point a set of paradoxical attitudes that the American public holds about schooling. Schooling simultaneously evokes marked despair and inspires fervent hope. Even if our local schools are thriving we are convinced that public education as a whole is in decay. We recognize the historic stubbornness of schooling in the face of reform and yet we blithely assert the promise of the next improvement program. We acknowledge that schools cannot be easily controlled, but we devise reforms that seek increasingly to subjugate them to the instrumental rationality of standardized testing, whole-school reform, etc Using Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbolic forms to examine these conflicting hopes and anxieties, and to build a comprehensive view of schooling, I portray schooling as a cultural form.

German philosopher of the neo-Kantian school (see neo-Kantianism ). Immanuel Kant had taught that human experience was conditioned by the categories or forms of thought to which all human experience was limited. Cassirer held that, in addition to Kant's list of categories, there are also forms of thought conditioning mythical, historical, and practical thinking. These forms of thought could be discovered by the study of language. Cassirer was born in Breslau. With the rise of Nazism in Germany, he fled to the USA 1932. He became a professor at Yale 1941. His main work is the three-volume hut(1)

Contact Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) German philosopher and historian of ideas, often typed as one of the leading exponents of neo-Kantian thought in the 20th century. Cassirer's major works include The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms (1923-29). Cassirer saw that human beings were above all a symbolizing animals. The whole range of our achievements, science, religion, arts, history, political thought, religion, language - they all are unique parts of our evolutionary process and help us to understand our experience and the world. "Man has, as it were, discovered a new method of adapting himself to his environment. Between the receptor system and the effector system, which are to be found in all animal species, we find in man a third link which we may describe as the symbolic system . This new acquisition transforms the whole of human life. As compared with the other animals man lives not merely in a broader reality; he lives, so to speak, in a new dimension of reality."

  • Ernst Cassirer 1874-1945
    German philosopher.
    INTRODUCTION
While frequently identified with the neo-Kantian school of modern philosophy, Cassirer wrote on many different subjects, his works ranging from a book about the Enlightenment to an attempt to reconcile Albert Einstein's theory of relativity with the work of Immanuel Kant. With his best-known and most highly regarded work, Philosophie der symbolischen Formen (The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms), Cassirer advanced the idea that symbols and myths are the basis of all cultural activity and the foundation of philosophy.
    Biographical Information
Born into a wealthy and cultured Jewish family in Breslau, Silesia, Cassirer began studying jurisprudence at his family's insistence, only to change his focus to philosophy after attending a course on Kant taught by Georg Simmel. Simmel also introduced Cassirer to the work of Hermann Cohen, a principal figure in the neo-Kantian school of philosophy. Cassirer sought out Cohen and wrote his doctoral dissertation under him at the University of Marburg, where Cassirer was profoundly influenced by the "back-to-Kant" movement and its emphasis on the philosophy of science. From 1919 to 1933 Cassirer taught as a professor at the University of Hamburg. There he had access to the Warburg Library and its vast collection of books on primitive culture and folklore, allowing him to begin research on his magnum opus—

Cassirer and Mauss: two phantoms on totemism.(Ernst Cassirer, Marcel Mauss)
Germanic Review, The September, 2005 by Keller, Thomas Content provided
in partnership with Contacts between German and French sociologists have often turned out to be missed rendezvous, one might say. Weber and Durkheim never talked to each other, nor did Simmel and Mauss (see Keller, "La pensee"). They did share some research objectives, though, as sociologists of both countries were looking for the origin of social bonds primarily in religious practices.
