Abstract: Butler refuses to fix the body as primary, as antecedent to discourse. ‘The body posited as prior to the sign is always posited or signified as prior’ (1993: 30). We cannot have any access to the body except through discourse. Yet, this does not mean that the body can be reduced to discourse. Indeed, the body exceeds discourse, and reworks the very norms that would constrain it. Butler has as little patience for an idealism that would reduce all matter to signs as she does with a materialism that would reductively separate matter from signs. The former ignores the fact that matter cannot be created by discourse; the latter ignores the fact that matter is always and only materialised through discourse. Both remain blind to the simple truth that all signs are themselves material (1993: 15, 30).

Metaphysics of Feminism:
A Critical Note on Judith Butler's Gender Trouble What is it about that incoherent discursive mess precariously held together by a cobweb of authorial and often authoritative names, and called feminist theory, that exercises such an appeal for countless women and even the odd man? Apparently, it is the promise of the "subversion" of "phallogocentric" "discourse" and "practices" that constitute and "construct" sexuality, and thus the promise of the "liberation" of "desire" and "identity" from "masculinist" shackles. All the quotation marks here mark terms that play a prominent part in Judith Butler's influential book on Feminism and the Subversion of Identity . The deployment of words such as "subversion" and "desire" by feminist theory could not have been done more skilfully by an advertising agency commissioned to design a campaign for a new perfume, albeit that the promise of liberation is supposed to be situated beyond the seductive allures of consumerist "signifying practices". To be sure, in common with many other feminist writers, Butler's endeavour is that of the subversion of "matrices of cultural intelligibility that govern gendered life" (p.41). A prominent position is assumed in feminist theory, and in Butler's book in particular, by the phrase "metaphysics of substance". Butler and others claim to put a critical distance between their own thinking and the traditional, purportedly phallological, and therefore, oppressive discourse of metaphysics, which is accused of being "naturalizing" and "ahistorical" and, along with that, of erecting an "ontology of substances" (p.25). What does Butler understand by a "metaphysics of substance" and why is such metaphysics to be put at arm's length? And does Butler's alternative proposal at all elude the metaphysics of substance? To start with the answers to these questions, let us turn to Section V of the first chapter, Identity, Sex, and the Metaphysics of Substance.

Butler I think that every sexual position is fundamentally comic. Judith Butler I would say that I'm a feminist theorist before I'm a queer theorist or a gay and lesbian theorist. Judith Butler It seems, though, that historically we have now reached a position in which Jews cannot legitimately be understood always and only as presumptive victims. Judith Butler Race and class are rendered distinct analytically only to produce the realization that the analysis of the one cannot proceed without the other. A different dynamic it seems to me is at work in the critique of new sexuality studies. Judith Butler Sexual harassment law is very important. But I think it would be a mistake if the sexual harassment law movement is the only way in which feminism is known in the media. Judith Butler The point is not to stay marginal, but to participate in whatever network of marginal zones is spawned from other disciplinary centers and which, together, constitute a multiple displacement of those authorities.

Bad Writing by D. G. Myers Originally published in the Weekly Standard 4 (May 10, 1999): 36-39. Bad academic writing is nothing new. Back in 1912, the critic Brander Matthews damned the scholarship of his day for its "endless quotations and endless citations and endless references," its "entangled" facts, its shameless taste for "interminable controversy over minor questions," its careless assumption that every reader had an "acquaintance with the preceding stages of the discussion." But though it still commits these faults more often than not, bad academic writing nowadays has become something worse than an aesthetic offense. Matthews Judith Butler Consider, for example, Judith Butler. Every year since 1994 the journal Philosophy and Literature Gender Trouble The move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relations in relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject to repetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into the thinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structural totalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility of structure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sites and strategies of the rearticulation of power.

I This was clearly also the position of Judah Magnes who also claimed at the time that the main policy goal of Jews in Palestine should be to establish institutional structures for Arab-Jewish cooperation. This history is for the most part unknown to American Judaism, since the story we are told, again and again, is that the necessity for the Israeli state emerged as a direct consequence of the Nazi genocide of the Jews. There was, of course, even then, throughout the 1940s, still an open and debated question: what form of government might be needed in these lands, and what would be the most democratic means of deciding the question. I cite the example of Levi to you because it shows that precisely from within the moral framework derived from the Holocaust, an opposition to the Israeli state is not only possible, but necessary. This thought is nearly unthinkable within American Judaism or, indeed, from within the progressive Jewish movements who call for the end of the occupation. And until we can unlink the way in which the Nazi genocide continues to act as a permanent justification for this state and its policies, there will be a silencing of dissent, a muting of public criticism. Levi himself claimed that we must not let the sufferings of the Jews under Nazism "justify everything." And the reporter who received this statement responded, "You can reason very coldly." But this was not coldness on his part; it was feeling, it was horror in the face of atrocities committed by Israelis. It was staying alive to the possibility of knowing and opposing the suffering of others.

It offers a powerful critique of heteronormativity and of the function of gender in the modern world. Material is in sections on subjects of sex/gender/desire; prohibition, psychoanalysis, and the production of the heterosexual matrix; and subversive bodily acts. This edition contains a new preface by the author, situating the work within the past decade of passionate debates on gender and sexuality, and countering some common misconceptions about the book and its aims. The author is professor of rhetoric and comparative literature at UC-Berkeley.

Colin,
Kindly explain please what it is that makes the "epistemic fallacy" a
fallacy. That Bhaskar says it is? The "epistemic fallacy" is *not* a

perspective within one (particularly irrelevant) side (the realist side) within one (...) debate (philosophy of science) within one (...) school of philosophy (analytic philosophy). What, pray tell, is accomplished by applying the insights gained through a cursory reading of a dictionary of philosophy to an inquiry that calls the very conditions of those insights into question? I need not spell out how you argue ad hominem, and you may not accept my designation of your impressions as strawmanning, but that's exactly what it is. Not that I especially care. But since you insist on invoking rationalist criteria for argument, I thought I'd just point out how
