He was originally a Lasallean but took part in the foundation of the German Social Democratic Workers' Party in Eisenach in 1869 and was a member of the Party Committee. He and W Liebknecht joined Marxist and Lassallean principles. In 1870, on account of the manifesto issued by the Party Committee against the war, he was arrested and imprisoned in a fortress. He criticized the draft program submitted to the Gotha Congress ; in 1878, owing to illness, he withdrew from party work. Brandes, Georg Morris (1842-1927) Danish critic, publicist and historian of history and literature. Brandler was made a scapegoat for their failure and removed from the German leadership in 1924. For sympathizing with Bukharin's Right Opposition in 1929, he was expelled from the German CP and the Comintern. Brandler continued to lead an independent right-wing opposition to the KPD, known as the Communist Party Opposition (KPO), until the beginning of the Second World War. Dieter Münch, Franz Brentano and phenomenology In: Lester Embree et al . ed., Encyclopedia of Phenomenology Dordrecht: Kluwer 1997, p. 71 b - 75 b FRANZ BRENTANO is generally regarded as the philosopher who reintroduced the concept of intentionality into modern philosophy - a concept later characterized by HUSSERL as the principal subject of phenomenology ( Ideen I: 182). It was BRENTANO who gave HUSSERL the idea that philosophy is a "rigorous science" based on the description of the immediately given. BRENTANO's relation to the phenomenological movement is, however, quite complex and has still to be thoroughly examined. For such an endeavour it is not enough to recognize influences and parallels, one has also to understand that BRENTANO's philosophy is rooted in a cultural background quite different from that of HUSSERL. FRANZ CLEMENS BRENTANO (1838 - 1917) was born into one of the most influential German families of the 19th century: the romantic lyric poet CLEMENS BRENTANO was his uncle and godfather, the politically influential romantic BETTINA VON ARNIM his aunt, the founder of historical jurisprudence and Prussian minister KARL FRIEDRICH VON SAVIGNY his uncle, his brother LUJO was a well-known economist, and his nephew GEORG VON HERTLING (who was to write his doctoral dissertation and habilitation under BRENTANO's guidance) later became president of Bavaria and German Imperial Chancellor. BRENTANO was educated in a rigid Catholic atmosphere.

Franz Brentano’s The True and the Evident Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint Psychologie vom empirischen Standpunkt , 1874), and The Origin of Our Knowledge of Right and Wrong Ursprung sittlicher Erkenntnis , 1889). His teaching had an important influence on many of his students, who included Edmund Husserl, Alexius Meinong, Tomas Masaryk, Christian Ehrenfels, Anton Marty, and Franz Hillebrand. Brentano made important contributions to epistemology, moral philosophy, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language. The True and the Evident Wahrheit und Evidenz ) is a collection of his essays and letters, which was edited by Oskar Kraus, and published in 1930. Brentano’s theory of truth defines the concrete nature of judgments of reality, in that it sees truth as existing in concrete things. Truth is not seen as an abstract concept, but as belonging to judgments of things . Every judgment refers to a thing According to Brentano, the correspondence theory of truth says that a judgment (or a proposition, belief, or opinion) is true if the judgment refers to something which exists in reality. A judgment is true if it corresponds to things as they are in reality, and is false if it does not correspond to things as they are in reality. Every judgment is either true or false. Every judgment has a formal or subjective reality. The thing to which a true judgment refers has an objective reality. Brentano criticizes the correspondence theory of truth, saying that it does not explain how a true judgment can affirm the absence or nonexistence of something. If there is nothing to which a judgment may correspond, or of which it may be a representation, then the judgment cannot correspond to something true. A relation of correspondence cannot be established between a true judgment and something which does not exist.

Knowledgeable and at the same time acutely insightful, Barry Smith provides us with challenging analysis, not only of Franz Brantano himself, but also of those thinkers most closely associated with his school, especially Marty, Meinong, Witasek, Twardowski, Kotarbinski, Ehrenfels, Husserl, and Menger. For reasons which can only be fully appreciated after reading Smith's book itself, Austrian Philosphy is vital for an understanding of the present situation in philosophy."

Z Franz Brentano Biography Franz Clemens Honoratus Hermann Brentano (January 16, 1838 Marienberg am Rhein (near Boppard) - March 17, 1917 Zürich) was an influential figure in both philosophy and psychology. His influence was felt by other figures such as Edmund Husserl and Alexius Meinong who followed and adapted Brentano's views.
Life
Franz Brentano studied philosophy at the universities of Munich, Würzburg, Berlin (with Trendelenburg) and Münster. He had a special interest in Aristotle and scholastic philosophy. He wrote his dissertation in Tübingen On the manifold sense of Being in Aristotle.
Subsequently he began to study theology and entered the seminar in Munich and then Würzburg, preparing to become a Roman Catholic priest (ordained August 6, 1864). In 1865 - 1866 he writes and defends his habilitation essay and theses and begins to lecture at the university of Würzburg. His students in this period include among others Carl Stumpf and Anton Marty.
Between 1870 and 1873 Brentano is heavily involved in the debate on papal infallibility. As strong opponent of such a dogma, he eventually gives up his priesthood. Following his religious struggles, also Stumpf (who was studying at the seminar at the time) is drawn away from the church.

This research is opposed to the work of D. Kaplan, D. Davidson, R. Chisholm and A. Plantinga. Central is the idea that the concept of a judging subject may be part of logic without involving subjectivism. · Professor Dr. Wilhelm Baumgartner, Würzburg
· Professor Dr. Johannes Brandl, Salzburg

the Legacy of Franz Brentano

by Barry Smith, Open Court, 1994
Barry Smith
is a Professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York, Buffalo, and the Editor of The Monist . The SUNY Buffalo Philosophy Department is the home ground of Paul Kurtz , founder and chairman of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP) , the Council for Secular Humanism , and Prometheus Books . Smith's thought and the editorial viewpoint of The Monist , long edited by John Hospers , Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of South California and first Presidential Nominee of the Libertarian Party , both appear to fit into Kurtz's vision of "seculiar humanism." This orientation overlaps the concerns of The Proceedings of the Friesian School but differs mainly in its hostility to religion note Smith's book on Austrian Philosophy appears to have three ultimate purposes: (1) the identification of a distinctive Austrian school and tendency in 20th Century philosophy, which avoided many of the mistakes of the mainstream German tradition, made some major contributions to recent philosophy, but also needs some corrections; (2) a rediscovery and rehabilitation of Franz Brentano , especially Brentano's Aristotelianism, not just as a major and sometimes overlooked influence in 20th Century philosophy, but as an influence whose principles could usefully be taken more seriously now as a corrective to mistakes in subsequent philosophy; and (3) as a bridge to the Austrian school of economics, especially Ludwig von Mises and
