Francis Herbert Bradley’s Appearance and Reality Francis Herbert Bradley’s Appearance and Reality: A Metaphysical Essay (1893) discussses many important aspects of his philosophy of Absolute Idealism. Bradley describes the ways in which appearance is inseparable from reality, and he explains what this means for our understanding of the universe. The treatise is divided into two books. Book I is titled “Appearance.” Book II is titled “Reality.” Book I has twelve chapters, entitled: I. "Primary and Secondary Qualities;" II. "Substantive and Adjective;" III. "Relation and Quality;" IV. "Space and Time;" V. "Motion and Change and Its Perception;" VI. "Causation;" VII. "Activity;" VIII. "Things;" IX. "The Meanings of Self;" X. "The Reality of Self;" XI. "Phenomenalism;" XII. "Things in Themselves." Book II has fifteen chapters, entitled: XIII. "The General Nature of Reality;" XIV. "The General Nature of Reality ( cont .);" XV. "Thought and Reality;" XVI. "Error;" XVII. "Evil;" XVIII. "Temporal and Spatial Appearance;" XIX. "The This and The Mine;" XX. "Recapitulation;" XXI. "Solipsism;" XXII. "Nature;" XIII. "Body and Soul;" XXIV. "Degrees of Truth and Reality;" XXV. "Goodness;" XXVI. "The Absolute and Its Appearances;" XXVII. "Ultimate Doubts." According to Bradley, the goal of metaphysics is to understand reality and to find a way of thinking about reality that is not self-contradictory. Reality is consistent and is compatible with itself. Whatever is inconsistent with itself is unreal.

Francis Herbert Bradley
He was born at Clapham, Surrey, England. He was the child of Charles Bradley, an Evangelical preacher, and his second wife, Emma Linton. In 1865, he entered University College, Oxford. He was a member of the movement known as British idealism and famous for his pluralistic approach to philosophy. His pluralistic outlook saw a unity transcending divisions between the philosophy of ethics, history, logic, epistemology, metaphysics and psychology. One of Bradley's notable characteristics, in his writing, is his technique of arguing from the meaning of a word. In his concern with word meanings he might be seen as anticipating the more language-orientated philosophy of the 20th century.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Bradley, Francis Herbert F rancis Herbert Bradley is said to be the greatest logician in British philosophy; he demolished the assumptions of Hegelian utilitarian, and hedonistic ethics, an achievement that compelled materialism and empiricism to abolish a number of their concepts. His attacks against empiricism, emphasizing experience exclusively, led to his expounding a new metaphysical system of absolute idealism. It was characterized by acceptance of the contradiction between concept and reality. But Bradley, a brilliant thinker, found that his own logic turned against him, forcing him in his later years to abandon some of his personal theories. But with the growth of enriching wisdom, he finally crowned his estimable career by acknowledging the depth of Plato's genius and adopting a platonic mysticism. His work Appearance and Reality (1893) is one of the epochal books of modern philosophy. A.G.H. Sources:

His philosophy drew heavily on the work of the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Born in South Wales, January 30, 1846, Bradley attended University College at the University of Oxford. Soon after he won a fellowship at Merton College in 1870, he was stricken with a kidney disease that made him a semi-invalid. For the rest of his life, he devoted himself completely to writing. Shortly before his death on September 18, 1924, he received the Order of Merit, the first philosopher so honored. Bradley espoused the Hegelian idea that nothing is altogether real but the “Absolute,” defined as the totality of everything, which transcends contradiction. Everything else—including religion, science, moral precept, even common sense—is contradictory. One of his principal works

Idealism Ethics Metaphysics Major Works Ethical Studies (1876) Principles of Logic (1883) Appearance and Realtiy (1893) Biography: Francis Herbert Bradley was one of the most important and most famous of the advocates of British Idealism during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was influential not simply with other philosophers but also with British society generally. From his idealistic perspective he wrote about subjects as diverse as logic, metaphysics, and ethics, making important contributions at every turn. Nevertheless, it is his influence on Bertrand Russell and G.E. Moore for which he is best remembered because it was his ideas which inspired them and helped them revolutionize contemporary philosophy. In the field of ethics, Bradley heaped scorn upon the ideas behind utilitarianism; in particular, his distaste for hedonistic utilitarianism seems to have had no bounds. Bradley argued that morality and happiness could having nothing do to with each other and the idea that the pleasure should guide moral actions was incoherent. Instead, he wrote that the end for morality must be "self-realization," but which he did not simply mean self-interest.

About 14 pages (4,291 words) Summary
The English idealist philosopher Francis Herbert Bradley was born in Clapham and educated at University College, Oxford; in 1870 he was elected to a fellowship at Merton College, Oxford, terminable on marriage. Since he never married and the terms of the fellowship did not require him to teach, he was able to devote himself entirely to philosophical writing. His first published work was a pamphlet titled The Presuppositions of Critical History (Oxford, 1874). There followed Ethical Studies (London, 1876), Principles of Logic (London, 1883), and Appearance and Reality (London, 1893), as well as many articles in philosophical journals, some of which were published in Essays on Truth and Reality (Oxford, 1914) and others in Collected Essays (Oxford, 1935).
