His primary philosophical achievement was the advancement of a theory he called " immaterialism " (later referred to as " subjective idealism " by others). This theory, summed up in his dictum, "Esse est percipi" To be is to be perceived "), contends that individuals can only directly know sensations and ideas of objects , not abstractions such as " matter ." He was a bishop. I do not here mean to imply that a religious bent precludes insanity. It is rather that this particular lunacy was ascribed to Berkeley over and above that freely attributed to him as a man of the cloth. Moreover, this predication of psychosis was in spite of Berkeley's evident wit, wisdom and wile whilst writing on topics diverse as the calculus, natural law, optics, politics, poverty and, somewhat incongruously, tar-water. Why then was Berkeley seen as having taken leave of his senses? Ironically, it was because he beseeched us to pay strict attention to the evidence of their testimony. Berkeley made a quite remarkable claim: there is no such thing as matter. Put so bluntly, this sounds ridiculous. No trousers or Meccano? No chifferobes or lariats? This must be manifest derangement. Not quite. Berkeley was an undergraduate of Trinity College Dublin. A few years prior to his matriculation, William Molyneaux, another Dubliner, entered into an exchange of letters with John Locke. Molyneaux was impressed with his correspondent's lately published work, the

GEORGE BERKELEY (1685-1753), Irish bishop and philosopher, the eldest son of William Berkeley (an officer of customs who had, it seems, come to Ireland in the suite of Lord Berkeley of Stratton, lord lieutenant, 1670-1672, to whom he was related), was born on the 12th of March 1685, in a cottage near Dysert Castle , Thomastown, Ireland. He passed from the school at Kilkenny to Trinity College, Dublin (1700), where, owing to the peculiar subtlety of his mind and his determination to accept no doctrine on the evidence of authority or convention, he left the beaten track of study and was regarded by some as a dunce , by others as a genius. During his career at Dublin the works of Descartes and Newton were superseding the older text-books, and the doctrines of Locke's Essay were eagerly discussed. Thus he "entered on an atmosphere which was beginning to be charged with the elements of reaction against traditional scholasticism in physics and in metaphysics " (A. C. Fraser ). He became a fellow in 1707. His interest in philosophy led him to take a prominent share in the foundation of a society for discussing the new doctrines, and is further shown by his

John Locke had constructed a theory of knowledge in which the subject was closed up within himself. The object of such knowledge was consequently ideas (subjective impressions) and not things. If ideas are the immediate object of our knowledge, is it ever possible to admit an external reality corresponding to such ideas?

Bishop George Berkeley, 1685-1753.
Famous Irishman and bishop of the Church of England, after whom a town on the San Francisco bay was named after. George Berkeley was a prominent empiricist philosopher who laid out his famous idealist epistemology in his youthful Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710). He conflated Locke 's primary and secondary qualities into mere "ideas" thus reduced all human knowledge into mental interpretations. It was by radicalizing Berkeley's philosophy that David Hume made his stunning debut into intellectual history. It is to Berkeley whom we owe that tiresome question of the existence of the tree falling unobserved in the forest (or the Oxford ditty of the "tree in the Quad"). In political economy, Berkeley was a thorough pessimist - perhaps explained by the miserable economic state of the Ireland around him. He turned his pen to argue for government (and Church) intervention in creating the "social climate" for economic development in Ireland (a true empiricist always confuses cause and effect!). He made Law's doctrine that "easy money is the engine of trade" central to his policy conclusions, basing this on his argument that money was effectively only a "ticket" for a credit transaction (presaging the ideas of

BIOGRAPHY
George Berkeley was born near Kilkenny, Ireland, and, although an Anglican of English descent, he emphatically considered himself to be Irish. He studied at Kilkenny College and in 1700 went on to Trinity College, Dublin. There he read Descartes , Newton, and Hobbes . In 1707, he became a Fellow of the College and was ordained in the Anglican church. The next six years were to be the most philosophically productive in his life. In 1709, he published his New Theory of Vision, and in the following year his most important philosophic work, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge . In 1711, he wrote Discourse on Passive Obedience . Two years later, he published a more popular exposition of the doctrine of his Principles in the form of Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous For the next eleven years, Berkeley traveled widely, visiting with many of the great thinkers of his day. He became Dean of Derry in 1724, though most of his energy at this time seems to have been given to the founding of a college in the Bermudas. With promises of financial support, he sailed for Rhode Island in 1728 to establish farms for supplying his future college with food. Berkeley spent two and a half years in Rhode Island with his new wife and friends, waiting for the £20,000 the government had promised. When the funds never arrived, he finally gave up and returned to
