http://www.iep.utm.edu/b/behavior.htm
Behaviorism Behaviorism was a movement in psychology and philosophy that emphasized the outward behavioral aspects of thought and dismissed the inward experiential and sometimes the inner procedural aspects as well; a movement harking back to the methodological proposals of John B. Watson, who coined the name. Watson's 1912 manifesto proposed abandoning Introspectionist attempts to make consciousness a subject of experimental investigation to focus instead on behavioral manifestations of intelligence. B. F. Skinner later hardened behaviorist strictures to exclude inner physiological processes along with inward experiences as items of legitimate psychological concern. Consequently, the successful "cognitive revolution" of the nineteen sixties styled itself a revolt against behaviorism even though the computational processes cognitivism hypothesized would be public and objective not the sort of private subjective processes Watson banned. Consequently (and ironically), would-be-scientific champions of consciousness now indict cognitivism for its "behavioristic" neglect of inward experience. The enduring philosophical interest of behaviorism concerns this

His varied research interests resulted in important contributions to the understanding of fermentation processes, solubility and transport phenomena in cells, the chemistry of carbohydrates, sugars, enzymes, and amino acids, and photochemistry. Neuberg was forced out of his position after the Nazi rise to power, and taking refuge in the United States. For the last several years of his life, he worked at New York University. The Neuberg collection consists of correspondence, lab notebooks, documents, photographs, and reprints, nearly all dating from after Neuberg's departure from Germany in 1940. The correspondence documents Neuberg's late-career work and the contacts he developed with American chemical manufacturers and industries involved in fermentation, as well as the burgeoning post-war relationship between scientific research and the federal dollar. Files for the American Cancer Society, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the U.S. Public Health Service in particular contain useful information for study of the politics and mechanics of government grants.

http://a-s.clayton.edu/mccarty/PSYC3540/Web links/watson.html
The story of John Watson, Founder of Behaviorism
(supermarket tabloid version)
John Watson was the only student in his college class to pass his final exam in Greek. He did it by staying up the whole night before the exam, in his room with a bottle of "coca cola syrup", cramming. Of course, Coke had some ingredients in common with the other "coke" back then, instead of being just the carbonated battery acid we all know and love today, so I don't know that his strategy would work as well for you all. This story is strictly for those of you who actually wanted to know the stuff about Watson that I didn't get around to telling you during the semester. If you're not interested, don't worry, it won't be on the final. 1913 was the year he published his famous paper on behaviorism, which was pretty controversial to put it mildly. Also during this decade he worked with a young Karl Lashley - yeah, yeah, they did conditioning experiments and stuff, but they also did one of the first really probing studies of attitudes toward sex, which included some really specific (for the times) questions about sexual behavior. All his life Watson was a radical supporter of sex education, probably just because he was obsessed with sex. How unfortunate for him, then, that after an illness in 1915 his wife started to lose interest in sex, in him, finally, in everything except having a nice social life among the Baltimore elite. (But wait, it gets more unfortunate.) The folks over at Johns Hopkins didn't like this story so much when they got wind of it. Watson thought it would blow over, but Baldwin's experience should have been a warning to him: these people wanted this scandalous affair with Rosalie to end, regardless of the state of Watson's marriage. Watson wouldn't end it. Rosalie's parents also wanted it to end - they wanted to send her to Europe for a while, and even threatened to cut her off financially. She was equally stubborn. In light of his ongoing affair, Watson was asked to resign in October 1920. You can imagine him being shocked - the biggest name in American psychology, how could they fire him! And what about all his "friends" in the department? No one supported him. Poof, his career was over. His psychology career, anyway...

Bibliography of the Noema The following bibliography includes not only articles that deal explicitly with the concept of the noema, but articles that address the noema within the more general framework of Husserl's thought on intentionality. The primary Husserlian text is Ideas I (1913), although many commentators appeal to passages in Logical Investigations (1900-1901) and Cartesian Meditations Ethel M. Kersey's "The Noema, Husserlian and Beyond: An Annotated Bibliography of English Language Sources," Philosophy Research Archives 9 (1983) and the bibliography in Husserl, Intentionality, and Cognitive Science , edited by Hubert L. Search tips
There are three kinds of search you can perform on MindPapers: All fields This mode searches for entries containing all the entered words in their title, author, date, comment field, or in any of many other fields showing on MindPapers pages. Surname This mode searches for entries containing the text string you entered in their author field. Note that the database does not have first names for all authors, so it is preferable to search only by surnames. If you search for a full name or a name with an initial, enter it in the format used internally by MindPapers, namely the "Lastname, Firstname" or "Lastname, F." format. Advanced This mode differs from the all fields mode in two respects. First, some information not publicly available on MindPapers is searched, e.g., abstracts and excerpts gathered by the MindPapers crawler, which are not always accurate but can help broaden one's search. Second, you may prefix any term with a '+' or '-' to narrow the search to entries containing it or not containing it, respectively. Terms which are not prefixed by a '+' are not mandatory. Instead, they are weighed depending on their frequency in order to determine the best search results. You may also search for a literal string composed of several words by putting them in double quotation marks (").

Robert M. Young
Contents Preface Introduction ... Bibliography BIBLIOGRAPHY In the brain, which we term the seat of reason, there is not anything of moment more than I can discover in the crany of a beast: and this is no inconsiderable argument of the inorganity of the soul, at least in the sense we generally so receive it. Thus we are men, and we know not how. Sir Thomas Browne, c. 1635. It remains sadly true that most of our present understanding would remain as valid and useful if, for all we knew, the cranium were stuffed with cotton wadding. Gerard, 1949. It would be tedious and pointless to list all the works which have been examined or consulted in the course of this study, even though a comprehensive bibliography on nineteenth-century psychology and neurology is an important desideratum today. The bibliography of Benjamin Rand (Baldwin, 1901, III) is the most convenient single source which has appeared, while Current Work in the History of Medicine, Psychological Abstracts
