Again, fine marbles are calluses of the earth; gold and silver, its sediments; our clothes, animal-hair; their purple, blood from a shellfish. Our very breath is something similar and changes from this to that. ( Meditations MARCUS AURELIUS, Roman emperor from 161 to 180 CE, was the last of the great Stoic philosophers. He was born in Rome as Marcus Annius Verus, of Spanish ancestry. His father died when he was a young boy, but Marcus soon enjoyed the favor of the emperor Hadrian. Nicknaming him Verissimus, meaning ‘the most truthful’, Hadrian made Marcus a priest at the tender age of eight, and betrothed him to the daughter of Lucius Ceionius Commodus when he was fifteen. When Ceionius died two years later, Hadrian arranged for the trustworthy Antoninus Pius, Hadrian’s successor to the throne, to adopt both Marcus and Ceionius’ son Lucius Verus. Marcus learned rhetoric, grammar, philosophy, and law from the best teachers of his day. Frank, sincere, and sensitive in character, Marcus was frail, but also lean and athletic. He married Pius’ daughter Faustina in 145 CE, and they had a daughter the next year. An ever loyal and obedient son-in-law, around 147 CE Marcus abandoned rhetoric for Stoicism, which inspired him the rest of his life. His own Stoic philosophy was deeply influenced by the great Stoic teacher and ex-slave Epictetus.

From LoveToKnow 1911
MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS (121-180), Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, was born in Rome A.D. 121, the date of his birth being variously stated as the 6th, 21st and 26th of April. His original name was Marcus Annius Verus.' His mother Domitia Calvilla (or Lucilla) was a lady of consular rank, and the family of his father Annius Verus (prefect of the city and thrice consul ), originally Spanish, had received patrician rank from Vespasian . Marcus was three months old when his father died, and was thereupon adopted by his grandfather. The moral training which he received from his grandfather and his mother must have been all but perfect. The noble qualities of the child attracted the attention of Hadrian , who, playing upon the name "Verus," said that it should be changed to "Verissimus" ( Bhpiccimoc on medals). Hadrian adopted, as his successor, Titus Antoninus Pius (uncle of Marcus), on condition that he in turn adopted both Marcus (then seventeen) and Lucius Ceionius Commodus, the son of Aelius Caesar, who had originally been intended by Hadrian as his successor, but had died before him. Marcus had been, at the age of fifteen, betrothed to Fabia, the sister of Commodus; the engagement was broken off by Antoninus Pius , and he was betrothed to Faustina, the daughter of the latter. In 139 the title of Caesar was conferred upon him and he dropped the name of Verus. The full name he then bore was Marcus

As fans of the movie Gladiator know, there was an elderly Roman emperor named Marcus Aurelius, and his top general was named Maximus.
I don't know if the rest of the story proceeded as Hollywood depicted it—highly doubtful—but there was indeed an emperor named Marcus Aurelius, and his top general was indeed a man named Maximus.
Marcus Aurelius was not only a very enlightened ruler, but perhaps the only example in history of Plato's ideal of a philosopher-king.
In his memoirs, Marcus Aurelius occasionally touched upon his general Maximus. And his main point about Maximus was how much he learned from him.
I find that fascinating. Here was the emperor of the world, most examples of which were puffed-up with self-importance, and yet Marcus Aurelius stressed how much he learned from his top general.
Here was someone who did not need to inflate a self-image. He was content to be as he was, and happened to find himself as an emperor.
That was one of the great things about Marcus Aurelius: his humility. It's a quality that I try to learn from Marcus Aurelius and others.
It seems to me that humility is a pre-requisite for the spiritual journey, since without it the inner doors remain closed.

121-180 A.D.
Marcus Aurelius, who assumed power in 161 A.D., was the fifth of the "Adoptive Emperors", the Golden Age of the Empire under the emperors Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian , Antoninus Pius, and himself. Unfortunately, Marcus Aurelius broke with the tradition of adopting the best man for the job, and passed the Empire on to his own son; the dynasty soon came to an end. Marcus ruled during difficult times; famine and plague hurt Rome within, and barbarians were pushing back the borders from without. Marcus Aurelius is best known as the philosopher-emperor who wrote down his "meditations" in Greek; they are among the best examples of Stoic philosophy which we have.

Of course, Hollywood movies have depicted the Romans as great warriors and they also depicted their emperors as great conquerors who are responsible for leading their great armies to victory against the barbarians. However, not many people know that Romans are also great philosophers and one of their emperors named Marcus Aurelius has been depicted as a great emperor who brought many victories to the Roman Empire as well as great philosophical writing. Not many people know that Marcus Aurelius was not only a great emperor who led the Great Roman Legions against barbaric Germanic tribes and Gaul tribes and won, he is also a devout stoic philosopher who wrote The Meditations This particular Philosophical Book has been recognized as one of the greatest works of art. It is still being revered as a literary monument on government service. This philosophical book has been praised as having exquisite accent and infinite tenderness.

    Marcus Aurelius
Emperor Born: Died: Birthplace: Ancient Rome Best known as: The Roman emperor who wrote Meditations Marcus Aurelius was the Roman emperor who wrote Meditations , a classic text of philosophy and history. Born into privilege, he was adopted by Roman emperor Antoninus Pius and succeeded him in 161. Marcus ruled with his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus until 169, when Lucius died. As sole ruler, Marcus spent most of his reign warring with rebellious Parthians, Germans and Britons on the empire's frontier. He was known to be a humane ruler, despite his brutal persecution of the followers of Jesus Christ . While on campaign he wrote aphorisms and reflections for self guidance. Translated and published since the 17th century, his Meditations reveal a contemplative and insightful nature influenced by the Stoics of Greece.

A great estate is a great disadvantage to those who do not know how to use it, for nothing is more common than to see wealthy persons live scandalously and miserably; riches do them no service in order to virtue and happiness; therefore 'tis precept and principle, not an estate, that makes a man good for something.
Riches

A rational nature admits of nothing but what is serviceable to the rest of mankind.
Human Nature
And yet, after all, what is posthumous fame? Altogether vanity. Fame Be simple and modest in your deportment, and treat with indifference whatever lies between virtue and vice. Love the human race; obey God. Modesty Can we wonder that men perish and are forgotten, when their noblest and most enduring works decay? Death comes even to monumental structures, and oblivion rests on the most illustrious names. Death Consider, for example, and you will find that almost all the transactions in the time of Vespasian differed little from those of the present day. You there find marrying and giving in marriage, educating children, sickness, death, war, joyous holidays, traffic, agriculture, flatterers, insolent pride, suspicions, laying of plots, longing for the death of others, newsmongers, lovers, misers, men canvassing far the consulship and for the kingdom; yet all these passed away, and are nowhere.

COMMODUS AND THE GLADIATORS
CHAPTER 2 - MARCUS AURELIUS
Commodus, the ruthless slayer of men and animals, was the son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his wife, Faustina the Younger . Adopted by Emperor Antoninus Pius (Faustina's father and his own uncle by marriage), Marcus Aurelius was groomed for ruling Rome at an early age. A prolific writer, his Meditations are still studied - and quoted - today:
  • The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts Very little is needed to make a happy life. It is all within yourself, in your way of thinking. The first rule is to keep an untroubled spirit. The second is to look things in the face and know them for what they are.
By the time Marcus Aurelius became Emperor in 161, trade routes between Rome and her provinces had been established. But when Marcus Aurelius assumed sole power, the Empire's northern and eastern borders were not secure. (Follow this link to an animated map of Rome's expanding and shrinking territory throughout the centuries.) In 167, Rome's Emperor and his legions were fighting Germanic tribes along the Rhine-Danube frontier. At the time, Rome's army was mostly loyal to the Emperor.
