    The Emperor Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus is regarded as one of the greatest emperors in Roman history; he is numbered among the "Five Good Emperors." Marcus ruled the vast empire from 161 to 180 AD. A highly intelligent man, he stands out as one of the greatest intellectual rulers in Western Civilization. Although a great military leader, Marcus was impressed with a firm desire for peace that manifested itself in his philosophical writings. Marcus was born in Rome on April 26, 121 and raised in a wealthy and politically prominent family. He was noticed by the Emperor Hadrian while he was still a child and was consequently given special educational privileges. Marcus was enrolled in the Equestrians at the age of six and the next year he was given special permission to attend the priestly college of the Salii in Rome. It was here that Marcus was taught by the greatest thinkers of the day, representing a variety of cultures. Back to Roman Empire Chronology Back to Roman Thought Chronolog Marcus continued to receive help from emperors, but later assistance would come in the form of his growth in political power. He was adopted by

    Short Biography of Marcus Aurelius
Although his rapid succession to emperor is unknown, Marcus Aurelius became a member of the Stoic Philosophers. His leadership fulfilled the hopes of many who had wanted both an intellectual with an open social mind to lead the Roman people. In a strange occurrence, Marcus Aurelius wanted his adoptive brother Verus to also become an emperor beside him. After repeatedly insisting, Verus was made an equal emperor with Marcus Aurelius and thereafter Rome would have two emperors who ruled astonishingly well together. When Aurelius came to power, war was eminent with Parthia who had and defeated the Romans repeatedly, namely in Syria. Verus was sent to lead the army in Armenia, even though he was not trained in military services. When Rome was finally able to take Parthia, a plague that killed off many of the soldiers was subsequently carried to Rome and annihilated over 25% of the Roman population. The Meditations , shows his love for mankind through his Stoic philosophy that always looked for harmony.

"...We live but for a moment" INTRODUCTION
Few of the greats of philosophy have had proper jobs. True, Spinoza was a lens-grinder and Mill an exports clerk, but Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome and ruler of his world. Known as one of the 'Five Good Emperors' he seems to have genuinely tried to improve the lot of slaves and the poor. His 'Meditations' are a collections of his notes on the philosophy of Stoicism which was so much favoured by the Roman elite. Founded by Zeno, who taught in the Stoa Poikile (Painted Colonnades) of 3rd century BC Cyprus it held an intense reverence for the cosmic order, a devotion to rule, a view that free-will and determinism were not incompatible, and an acceptance that all religions have a common goal. An ideal set of views for an imperial state, and one which has echoes to this day. THE VERY SQUASHED VERSION
My grandfather Verus taught me to be candid and to control my temper. I thank the gods that my relatives and servants were almost all good persons, that my wife is deferential, affectionate and frugal, and that, when I came to philosophy I did not waste time in logic or reading. Put away your books and face the matter itself. As for your body, value it no more than if you were just expiring; it is nothing but a little blood and bones. Your breath is but a little air pumped in and out. But the third part is your mind. Here make a stand.

    http://www.compedit.com/garp'sworld.htm
GARP’S WORLD, IRVING’S LAUGHTER MERRIL L. M. SKAGGS John Irving’s art is intricate and complex, and the task of reading his fiction perceptively is difficult. To react to an Irving novel with solemnity is to react inappropriately. Irving’s work, in its attacks on often unexamined cultural assumptions and habits, triggers laughter. It also elicits our deepest respect. Irving demands that we gasp with him, grieve with him, suffer with him, and then that we laugh with him, insisting on presenting his deeply-felt world as a painful comedy. For Irving’s laughter, sooner than later, demands to be taken seriously. Garp asks, at one point, "Why did people insist that if you were ‘comic’ you couldn’t also be ‘serious’"? Irving adds, "Garp felt most people confused being profound with being sober, being earnest with being deep" (p. 232). Profound, serious, and comic, Irving’s vision is one to which our culture powerfully responds. The New York Times of June 6, 1982, reported that the Pocket Book paperback of The World According to Garp had already sold over three million copies and that the paperback publishers anticipate selling a million more after the release of the movie. Irving’s provocative rendering of popular suspicions about the universe commands, at the least, our closest attention. Irving’s laughter seems to reflect a current cultural mood, a shared dream, and that dream becomes a whole world, shaped and imagined by Garp.

CE Marcus's reign soon saw fearful national disasters from flood, earthquakes, epidemics, threatened revolt (in Britain), a Parthian war, and pressure of barbarians north of the Alps. From 169 onwards he had to struggle hard against the German Quadi, Marcomani, Vandals, and others until success came in 174. In 175 (when Faustina died) he pacified affairs in Asia after a revolt by Avidius. War with Germans was renewed during which he caught some disease and died by the Danube in March 180. The famous Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (not his title; he simply calls them 'The matters addressed to himself') represents reflections written in periods of solitude during the emperor's military campaigns. Originally intended for his private guidance and self-admonition, the Meditations has endured as a potent expression of Stoic belief. It is a central text for students of Stoicism as well as a unique personal guide to the moral life.

Marcus Aurelius Not only is Marcus Aurelius one of my heroes, he's also one of history's leading Stoic Philosophers. Stoic philosophy. You know, one of the classic Hellenistic philosophies—right there with Epicureanism and Cynicism. Huh? Whether or not you’ve heard of Stoicism, you’ve met one of its leading thinkers: Marcus Aurelius—he’s the old emperor in the movie Gladiator. You remember the four noble virtues, right? Wisdom, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance. (versus the “other virtues” that Commodus prided himself in, of course.)

MARCUS AURELIUS: HIS MEDITATIONS [Extracts from translation by Jeremy Collier 1701 Revised by Alice Zimmern 1887] A man is as a limb as it were of an intelligent, righteous and irresistible being, that is all wisdom, and assigns matter and form, time, force, and fortune, to everything in one measure and proportion. A mind that is sound and healthy is prepared to digest all sorts of accidents A little ball is a beautiful thing to a child A wise man, therefore , must neither run giddily nor impatiently and contemptuously into his grave. He must look on death as nature's business and wait her leisure. A spider when it has caught a fly thinks it has done some great deed A star never wears a veil A man has work enough to make himself tolerable to himself. ... we have nothing but darkness and dirt to grasp at A soul unembarrassed with passion is a very citadel. A religious prince but without superstition Act like a Roman Emperor that loves his country. Alas! all this ceremony must end at last in stench and dust. Alexander, Julius Caesar and Pompey, what were they in comparison of Diogenes, Heraclitus and Socrates? These philosophers looked through things and their causes, and their ruling principles were in accordance. But as for those great princes, what a load of cares they were pestered with, to how many things there were slaves!

Originally named Marcus Annius Verus, Marcus was adopted by Antoninus Pius in 138 on the order of Hadrian, and became Marcus Aelius Aurelius Verus Caesar. After Hadrian’s death he was betrothed to Pius’daughter, Faustina II. The earliest portraits of Marcus Aurelius on Roman imperial coins appeared on coin reverses of 139 with the inscription AVRELIVS CAES AVG PII F COS DES: designation for his first consulship may be the occasion for his introduction onto the coinage. He appeared on a reverse at Alexandria in 139/40. At Rome his portrait was used on coin obverses in 140, but at Alexandria not until 144/5. The year 145 may be significant, as it opened with Antoninus and Marcus as consuls, and Marcus and Faustina II were married in the spring.

On the death of Antoninus Pius on 7th March 161, Marcus Aurelius became emperor. He assumed his adoptive father’s name Antoninus, and became Imperator Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus. The assumption of the name Antoninus makes it easy to distinguish between his coins as Caesar and those as emperor, even if there are no other indicators that Marcus was Augustus at the time. Marcus at once associated his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus, with himself as co-emperor, and the new situation of having

Marcus Aurelius: The Philosopher-Emperor of Rome Michael Lorenzen Abstract
Marcus Aurelius was the Emperor of the Roman Empire from 161 AD to 180 AD. He was also a noted philosopher. Historians generally consider him to have been one of the greatest Roman Emperors. It is easy to see why. There are many aspects of his leadership which demonstrate his management skills. These include his ability to navigate ethics, his understanding of the culture of the Roman Empire, his ability to manage the organization of the Roman bureaucracies, his success in introducing change, his capability to set policy, and his cleverness in problem solving. This paper will look at examples from all of these areas as well as provide an overview of his life and his philosophical beliefs. The book Marcus Aurelius: A Biography (2000) by Anthony R. Birley will be used to illustrate some points. Marcus Aurelius: The Philosopher-Emperor of Rome Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (April 26, 121 – March 17, 180) was Roman Emperor in the second century AD. He is considered to be the last of the so called Five Good Emperors who ruled Rome at the height of Roman power. He was also a major Stoic philosopher who wrote Meditations in the last decade of his life. The Emperor Antoninus Pius adopted Marcus Aurelius as his heir when Marcus was only 17. Under the long and generally peaceful reign of Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius held a variety of titles in the Roman bureaucracy including the title of Consul. He also studied philosophy extensively. When Antonius Pius died in 161, Marcus Aurelius became the Roman Emperor at the age of 40. There was no opposition to his succession.
