Augustine (Aurelius Augustinus) was one of the greatest theologians of Western Christianity. (In his day the Mediterranean world consisted of an Eastern, Greek-speaking half and a Western, Latin-speaking half, with different ways of looking at things, and different habits of thought.) He was born 13 November 354 in North Africa, about 45 miles south of the Mediterranean, in the town of Tagaste (modern Souk-Ahras) in Numidia, in what is now Algeria, but near ancient Carthage (modern Tunis). His mother, Monnica , was a Christian, and his father for many years a pagan (although he became a Christian before his death). His mother undertook to bring him up as a Christian, and on one level he always found something attractive about Christ, but in the short run he was more interested in the attractions of sex, fame, and pride in his own cleverness. After a moderate amount of running around as a teen-ager, he took a mistress, who bore him a son when he was about eighteen. Theirs was a long-term relationship, apparently with faithfulness on both sides, and the modern reader is left wondering why he did not simply marry the girl. He never tells us this (and in fact never tells us her name), so that we can only guess. It seems likely that she was a freedwoman, and that the laws forbade marriage between a free-born Roman citizen and a slave, or an ex-slave. When he was 19 and a student at Carthage, he read a treatise by Cicero that opened his eyes to the delights of philosophy.

Born to a Christian mother and pagan father at Tagaste in North Africa, Augustine was a confirmed Manichaean during his early years as a student and teacher of rhetoric at Carthage and Rome. But in Milan, during his early thirties, he began to study Neoplatonic philosophy under the guidance of Ambrose and eventually converted to Christianity. An account of his early life and conversion, together with a reasoned defense of his Neoplatonic principles, may be found in the Confessiones Confessions ) (401). He was named the Christian bishop of Hippo (Annaba, Algeria) in 396, and devoted the remaining decades of his life to the formation of an ascetic religious community. Augustine argued against the skeptics that genuine human knowledge can be established with certainty . His explanation of human nature and agency combined stoic and Christian elements. But it was by reference to the abstract philosophy of Plato that Augustine sought to prove the existence of god Acknowledging the difficulties of divine control and foreknowledge, he used an analysis of the nature of

and his Anti-Pelagian Writings which teach salvation by grace alone. These as well as the resulting Council of Orange are topics frequently avoided by Roman Catholics in discussions with Protestants on grace. Calvin and Luther could both be said to be Christians in the historic Augustinian tradition and both quote him extensively in their writings. Calvin defends the Augustinian view of grace in his Bondage and Liberation of the Will , quoting Augustine liberally. Augustine was the eldest son of Saint Monica, an African by birth, a Roman by education, a Milanese by baptism, still inspire many Christians all over the world who follow the path of faith. Perhaps the most influential theologian ever. Life
Saint Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste, a provincial Roman city in North Africa. He was raised and educated in Carthage. His mother Monica (Saint Monica) was a devout Christian and his father Patricius a pagan. As a youth Augustine followed the unpopular Manichaean religion, much to the horror of his mother. In Carthage, he developed a relationship with a young woman who would be his concubine for over a decade and produce a son. His education and early career was in philosophy and rhetoric, the art of persuasion and public speaking. He taught in Tagaste and Carthage, but soon aspired to compete with the best, in Rome. However, Augustine grew disappointed with the Roman schools, which he found apathetic. Manichean friends introduced him to the prefect of the City of Rome, Symmachus, who had been asked to provide a professor of rhetoric for the imperial court at Milan.

Saint Augustine of Hippo
General Information Saint Augustine, b. Nov. 13, 354, d. Aug. 28, 430, was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and, while serving (396-430) as bishop of Hippo Regius, the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture and, more than any other person, shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian Theology. Among his many writings considered classics, the two most celebrated are his semiautobiographical Confessions, which contains elements of Mysticism, and City of God, a Christian vision of history.
Early Life and Conversion
Augustine was born at Thagaste (modern Souk-Ahras, Algeria), a small town in the Roman province of Numidia. He received a classical education that both schooled him in Latin literature and enabled him to escape from his provincial upbringing. Trained at Carthage in rhetoric (public oratory), which was a requisite for a legal or political career in the Roman empire, he became a teacher of rhetoric in Carthage, in Rome, and finally in Milan, a seat of imperial government at the time. At Milan, in 386, Augustine underwent religious conversion. He retired from his public position, received baptism from Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, and soon returned to North Africa. In 391, he was ordained to the priesthood in Hippo Regius (modern Bone, Algeria); five years later he became bishop.

W At St. Augustine’s, the form of worship is unapologetically Western. When the Roman Church separated from Orthodox unity in 1054 her Latin Rite (style of Worship) was perfectly “Orthodox.” She maintained that Apostolic Rite up until the mid 1960’s when the forms of worship of the Western Church were radically and tragically altered. In the 19th century, the Western forms of worship were restored to Orthodox Christians who desired to use them. English is the primary language of worship, but sometimes the ancient language of the Western Church—Latin—is used particularly in the liturgical music sung by our excellent choir. St. Augustine Orthodox Christian Church is a varied community of believers; almost all of whom are converts to Orthodoxy, united in the traditional Christian faith. We worship using the ancient Western liturgy (know as the “Tridentine Mass” by many) and are joined to 250 million Orthodox Christians worldwide. We affirm the traditional doctrines and practices of the Apostolic Church, including the forgiveness of sins through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Trinity, and the sacrificial and sacramental life. St. Augustine belongs to the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, which is affiliated with the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA) and is in communion with all canonical Orthodox churches.

He followed the Manichaean religion in his student days, and was converted to Christianity by the preaching and example of Ambrose of Milan . He was baptized at Easter in 387, and returned to north Africa and created a monastic foundation at Tagaste for himself and a group of friends. In 391 he was ordained a priest in Hippo Regius (now Annaba, in Algeria). He became a famous preacher (more than 350 preserved sermons are believed to be authentic), and was noted for combatting the Manichaean heresy. In 396 he was made coadjutor bishop of Hippo (assistant with the right of succession on the death of the current bishop), and remained as bishop in Hippo until his death in 430. He left his

There are those who argue that Saint Augustine (†430) wrote a number of things inconsistent with the consensus of the Fathers, especially with regard to sin and human guilt before God and the nature of Grace. This is partly because distortions and overstatements of certain among his theological precepts by Medieval and Reformation thinkers have been unfairly attributed to the Saint himself. In fact, though, one would be hard-pressed to find in the writings of St. Augustine evidence of an intentional distortion of the Church’s teachings or signs of tenacious resistance to correction by his contemporaries. Indeed, Pope Vigilius [†555], in reconciling himself to the decisions of the Fifth Œcumenical Synod, invoked the memory, among "...our Fathers," of the "blessed Augustine" for his willingness to retract and correct various among his "writings" and "sayings" ("Decretal Letter,"

Saint Augustine of Hippo was an icon of the Christian faith and came from a Phoenician Punic stock. He called the Punic language "our own tongue". Biographical information Saint Augustine of Hippo was born at Tagaste on 13 November, 354. Tagaste, near ancient Hippo-Regius, was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia. Hippo-Regius and the surrounding area were Tyrian Phoenician colonies on the west coast of the bay. It was gaven the name Hipponensis Sinus; the surname Regius was bestowed on it as one of the places where the Numidian kings resided. Later it became a Roman colonia and prospered until A.D. 430, when it was taken by the Vandals. Hippo had recently been converted from Donatism. Although eminently respectable, his family was not rich, and his father, Patricius, one of the curiales of the city, was still a pagan. However, the admirable virtues that made Monica (Saint Monica) the ideal of Christian mothers at length brought her husband the grace of baptism and of a holy death, about the year 371. Although his mother was a devout Christian, he was not baptized in infancy.

AUGUSTINUM HIPPONENSEM AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO Apostolic Letter of the Sovereign Pontiff John Paul II August 28, 1986 To the Bishops, priests, religious families and faithful of the whole Catholic Church on the occasion of the sixteenth centenary of the conversion of Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church INTRODUCTION Venerable Brothers and beloved sons and daughters: Greetings and the apostolic blessing! I, too, have added my voice to those of my predecessors, when I expressed my strong desire "that his philosophical, theological and spiritual doctrine be studied and spread, so that he may continue ... his teaching in the Church, a humble but at the same time enlightened teaching which speaks above all of Christ and love."[5] On another occasion, I urged in particular the spiritual sons of this great saint "to keep the fascination of St. Augustine alive and attractive even in modern society." This is an excellent ideal that must fire us with enthusiasm, because "the exact and heartfelt knowledge of his life awakens the thirst for God, the attraction of Christ, the love for wisdom and truth, the need for grace, prayer, virtue, fraternal charity, and the yearning for eternal happiness.."[6] I am very happy, accordingly, that the propitious circumstance of the sixteenth centenary of his conversion and baptism offers me the opportunity to evoke his brilliant figure once again. This commemoration will be at the same time a thanksgiving to God for the gift that he has made to the Church, and through her to the whole human race, with this wonderful conversion. It will also be a very fitting occasion to recall to all that this convert, when he had become a bishop, was a marvelous example to pastors in his intrepid defense of the true faith, or, as he would say, of the "virginity" of the faith.[7] He was likewise the genius who constructed a philosophy that can truly be called Christian, because of its harmony with the faith, and a tireless promoter of spiritual and religious perfection.

Click here for item availability. Jostein Gaarder, author of Sophie’s World: A Novel about the History of Philosophy , offers in Vita Brevis a rare glimpse into the emotional psyche of St Augustine The letters refer to a pile of antique manuscripts discovered by Gaarder which were supposedly written by Floria Aemilia, Augustine’s lover, before he renounced worldly pursuits and opted for a life of celibacy. The book, a translation of the manuscripts which were written in Latin , gives the reader a front-row seat between the lovers. Augustine, canonized as an important Christian saint, was a man of deep passion and immense intellect. He led a life of dramatic turns, culminating in him giving up worldly pleasures for a spiritual one. He even had a son with Floria whom he never saw as the lovers were geographically apart after the baby was born. Hence the letters were the only means of communication between them.

Augustine of Hippo, or Saint Augustine was one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. In Roman Catholicism, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fountainheads of Reformation teaching on salvation and grace. He is also officially considered a saint by the Orthodox Church. Born in Africa as the eldest son of Saint Monica, he was educated in Rome and baptized in Milan. His works—including The Confessions , which is often called the first Western autobiography—are still read around the world. Augustine of Hippo
