Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste, a provincial Roman city in North Africa. He was raised and educated in Carthage. His mother Monica was a devout Christian and his father Patricius a pagan. As a youth Augustine followed the unpopular Manichaean religion, much to the horror of his mother. In Carthage, he developed a relationship with a young woman who would be his concubine for over a decade and produce a son. His education and early career was in philosophy and rhetoric, the art of persuasion and public speaking. He taught in Tagaste and Carthage, but soon aspired to compete with the best, in Rome. However, Augustine grew disappointed with the Roman schools, which he found apathetic. Manichaean friends introduced him to the prefect of the City of Rome, Symmachus, who had been asked to provide a professor of rhetoric for the imperial court at Milan.

Tolle Lege - Take Up and Read!
St. Augustine (354-430) was one of the great figures of the early Church. The story of his conversion to Christ is told in his Confessions , in which he describes how God used a single verse from the epistle to the Romans to suddenly convert him. He went on to serve the Church as an illustrious teacher and bishop in the African city of Hippo. Chapter XII.- Having Prayed to God, He Pours Forth a Shower of Tears, And, Admonished by a Voice, He Opens the Book and Reads the Words in Rom. xiii. 13; By Which, Being Changed in His Whole Soul, He Discloses the Divine Favour to His Friend and His Mother. I was saying these things and weeping in the most bitter contrition of my heart, when, lo, I heard the voice as of a boy or girl, I know not which, coming from a neighbouring house, chanting, and oft repeating, "Take up and read; take up and read." Immediately my countenance was changed, and I began most earnestly to consider whether it was usual for children in any kind of game to sing such words; nor could I remember ever to have heard the like. So, restraining the torrent of my tears, I rose up, interpreting it no other way than as a command to me from Heaven to open the book, and to read the first chapter I should light upon. For I had heard of Antony, that, accidentally coming in whilst the gospel was being read, he received the admonition as if what was read were addressed to him, "Go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me." And by such oracle was he forthwith converted unto Thee. So quickly I returned to the place where Alypius was sitting; for there had I put down the volume of the apostles, when I rose thence. I grasped, opened, and in silence read that paragraph on which my eyes first fell, - "Not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying; but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." No further would I read, nor did I need; for instantly, as the sentence ended, - by a light, as it were, of security infused into my heart, - all the gloom of doubt vanished away.

It is a commonplace that Ambrose, presiding in Milan, played the key role in Augustine's conversion, mainly by showing him that the Jewish scripture, which had seemed crude, could be read symbolically. The Book of Memory
Here in private, Augustine seeks to fathom himself-to emerge later as a visionary for others on a large public stage. To him the 'vast treasure store of memory' is where identity is forged, the context of present and future in which we continually relive The Myth of Suddenness: Paul Saint Augustine's Conversion by Garry Wills Of course, James could always validate his view of conversion by invoking the least questioned examples of sudden change - the voice that came to Paul on the road to Damascus and the voice that came to Augustine in the garden of Milan.

Augustine, a 4th-century African bishop, was one of Christianity's most influential thinkers. Augustine pushed the boundaries of self-knowledge in order to understand himself in relation to God.
f a vote were taken on who were the most influential Christians that lived since Bible times, then one name would show up near the top on just about anyone's list. Whether Protestant or Catholic, Conservative or Liberal, any informed observer over the past fifteen hundred years would include the name of Augustine at or close to the top. Some great leaders in our world made an impact on a whole generation. A select few even influenced a whole century. But Augustine was an incomparable figure in shaping the whole millennium of the Middle Ages and in many ways the foundations of modern Western civilization.

    About St. Augustine of Hippo
The feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo is August 28. St. Augustine was born in Tagaste, on November 13, 354, in a northern African region of farms and olive trees. His pagan father, Patricius, was a city official with little money, who wanted Augustine to have a good education. His mother, Monica, was a devout Catholic. She wept to God on his behalf, Augustine later said, "more than mothers are accustomed to weep for the bodily deaths of their children." Augustine studied rhetoric in Carthage, and later taught rhetoric in Carthage, Tagaste, Rome and Milan. While in Milan, he began to listen to the sermons of its Bishop Ambrose . Augustine's Confessions recount his extensive philosophical analysis of Christianity as well as Platonism, astrology, and Manichaeism in his early adult years. From the age of about 15 to 30, Augustine lived with a woman from Carthage. His son was born during that time. However, when Augustine decided he wanted to be married, he did not consider his mistress to be a suitable wife under the standards of his day. He then became engaged to marry a young girl, too young to legally marry. His mistress left and returned to Africa, and Augustine took another mistress. Ultimately, his good friend Alpius talked him out of the engagement. While Augustine considered Christianity, he prayed, "Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet." In 387, torn between his perverse lifestyle and Christianity, Augustine received a visit from an African Christian named Ponticianus. Ponticianus described the life of Egyptian monk Abba Anthony of the Desert, and Augustine became greatly disturbed at himself for rejecting God's will. He flung himself under a fig tree and wept to God, asking "How long, O Lord? . . . . Why not this very hour make an end to my uncleanness?" Augustine then read from St. Paul's Epistles

The freewill defense (St. Augustine of Hippo): Part 1
Information: Part 1 of a review of St. Augustine of Hippo's freewill defense. Before reading this article you may find it useful to read The problem of evil and suffering: An introduction Introduction In formulating a response to the problem of evil and suffering , it is generally recognised in Christian theology that St. Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 CE) set the benchmark, and that most (if not all) theologians have been either affirming or refuting his ideas ever since. St. Augustine lived quite a sensuous lifestyle, before he became devoted to the Christian faith. It might be said that having experienced the excesses of drinking and sex, that his theodicy was an inevitable response to what he felt was an unsatisfying way to live. You can read more about Augustine's early life and conversion in his own words, in The Confessions To begin understanding Augustine's theodicy, one first needs to examine his ideas in light of two major influences in his life. The first is Manichaeism (established by Mani 216-76 CE), which Augustine was associated with for some time. Manichaeism was a

    Augustine (354-430)
Augustine is a fourth century philosopher whose groundbreaking philosophy infused Christian doctrine with Neoplatonism Augustine tries to reconcile his beliefs about freewill, especially the belief that humans are morally responsible for their actions, with his belief that one’s life is predestined. Though initially optimistic about the ability of humans to behave morally, at the end he is pessimistic, and thinks that original sin makes human moral behavior nearly impossible: if it were not for the rare appearance of an accidental and undeserved Grace of God, humans could not be moral. Augustine’s theological discussion of freewill is relevant to a non-religious discussion regardless of the religious specific language he uses; one can switch Augustine’s “omnipotent being” and “original sin” explanation of predestination for the present day “biology” explanation of predestination; the latter tendency is apparent in modern slogans such as “biology is destiny.” Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to those parts of this article)
