Augustine of Hippo (354-430) envisioned a form of religious community life in which the members would "live in harmony, being united in mind and heart on the way God." He wrote, or inspired the writing of, a Rule outlining the basic principles of this sort of life. Today Augustinians and many other religious orders and congregations still use this Rule as their guide. A Bishop in Hippo (near modern-day Annaba, Algeria), Augustine was an influential leader in the African Church. As Christians were growing in their knowledge of God and Christ, Augustine helped to shape Christian theological teachings, particularly those about the role of Divine Grace and the nature of the Holy Trinity. In the process, he combatted many theological errors. The son of Monica, a holy Christian, and Patricius, a pagan, Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (now known as Souk Ahras, Algeria). He was educated in the best secular schools of his day. As a young man, he led a distinctly non-Christian and immoral life. He lived with a young woman without the benefit of marriage. Together they had a son, Adeodatus. Augustine became a teacher. He first taught Grammar in Tagaste. He then taught Rhetoric in Carthage, and later in Rome and Milan.

St. Augustine of Hippo: Biography and Selected Online Writings Early Church Father and Doctor of the Church (scroll down for a list of online writings) Life: St. Augustine, born in Roman N. Africa to a devout Catholic mother and a pagan father, was a notoriously rebellious Catholic teenager who cohabitated with a girlfriend, joined an exotic Eastern cult, and ran away from his mother. Augustine became a brilliant and renowned teacher of public speaking and was appointed by the emperor to teach in Milan, Italy, at that time the administrative capital of the Western Roman empire. While there, he happened to hear the preaching of the bishop of Milan, Ambrose , who baptized him in 386. St. Augustine ultimately renounced his secular career, put away his mistriss, and became first a monk, then a priest, then the bishop of Hippo, a small town on the N. African Coast. The voluminous writings of this Early Church Father span every conceivable topic in theology, morality, philosophy, and spirituality. St. Augustine of Hippo

Letters of St. Augustine

Saint Augustine was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture, and shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian theology. His two most celebrated writings are his semiautobiographical Confessions and City of God , a Christian vision of history.
Augustine was born at Thagaste in Numidia, which is part of present day Algeria. His father, Patricius (died about 371), was a pagan (later converted to Christianity), but his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian who labored untiringly for her son's conversion and who was canonized by the Roman Catholic church. As a child he was schooled in Latin literature and later went to Carthage to study rhetoric, where he became a teacher. By the age of twenty he turned away from his Christian upbringing. He was repelled by its codes of behavior, but he never completely renounced it.

e-mail: simon@suffolkchurches.co.uk St Augustine of Hippo, Ipswich This is a large 1920's estate church on the south-eastern outskirts. Diocesan architect Munro Cautley observed the letter of Suffolk Perpendicular rather than the spirit. Consequently, the church looks rather dumpy in its concrete rendering. Grander than his St Andrew , it has none of the spirit of its age that you find at contemporary near neighbour All Hallows Mock-Perpendicular rises above mock-Tudor on the Bucklesham Road. Still, this is a landmark building, and it is light and airy inside. It contains the bell from the now-vanished church of St Peter, Linstead Magna , which was derelicted the year before St Augustine was built. Supposedly, the font is from there, too. But it seems possible that the Linstead Magna font was moved to St Margaret, Linstead Parva , and St Augustine inherited the old font from Linstead Parva. A bit like one of those party games. Cautley takes himself rather seriously in south-east Ipswich.

Saint Augustine was a major figure in bringing Christianity to dominance in the previously pagan Roman Empire. Born in Tagaste, in Numidia, Augustine’s journey to faith was far from straightforward. Converting to Christianity in 386, Augustine had immersed himself first in Manichaeism, then in scepticism, and then in Neo-Platonism. Once a Christian, Augustine became Bishop of Hippo, and a powerful theologian and defender of the faith. Augustine’s theological career was marked by two campaigns against heresies in particular; first, against the Manichaeism to which he had previously adhered, and second, against Pelagianism. Manichaeism was a dualist philosophy, according to which there are two transcendent forces responsible for the world, one good and one evil. Its main attraction is that it can more readily explain the mixture of good and evil in the world around us than can the view that we are governed by a single omnipotent and benevolent God. To combat this Persian religion, Augustine affirmed the inherent goodness of God’s Creation. Evil, Augustine argued, does not exist in its own right, but is merely the privation of good, and therefore is not something that was created. All that was created, then is good, so the view that there is a single, good Creator is consistent with the way that the world is.

St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine of Hippo , bishop and Doctor of the Church, the greatest theologian of the Roman Catholic Church. Born in 354 at Tagaste (Algeria) of a pagan father and a Christian mother, St. Monica, he was brought up as a Christian but was not baptized. He studied at the University of Carthage to become a lawyer, but then turned to philosophy. For nine years he was an adept of Manichaeis. He moved to Rome to teach rhetoric, then to Milan, where he met St. Ambrose and came under his influence. Augustine described his long inner conflict in Confessions . Augustine was converted and baptized by St. Ambrose himself in 386-7. He became a priest in 391 and Bishop of Hippo in 395. He left voluminous writings which have probably proved more influencial in the history of thought than any Christian writer since St. Paul. His most famous works are Confessions, De Trinitate and De Civitate Dei.
He died in 430 at Hippo having composed the De Civitate Dei ( City of God) during the siege of the city by the Vandals.

Augustine's account of his early life of wrongdoing would not shock very many in America today. His sins in the fourth century are the same grave transgressions suffered by far too many of us in the 21st century. Sic faciunt omnes — concupiscence of the flesh, renunciation of the Catholic Faith and the embracing of modernism (heresy). What would shock many in America today would be the transformation he made from sinfulness to Sainthood, and not without a tributary of tearful petitions from his holy mother, Monica, to God, the Father of Mercy. As a beloved Son who imitated his father's habits of idolatry, Augustine took up residence in the sin of fornication. He and his mistress begot a son out of wedlock. Promoting the widespread heresy of Manichæanism, Augustine renounced his Catholic faith. Sadly, this may sound too prosaic in today's culture of Neo-Manichæanism.

The earlier sandstone church to the south of the present church was designed by A.W.N. Pugin in Early English Gothic style and built in 1848-51 with extensions in 1860; it is now used as the hall. The present church was opened in 1907. It was built in brick with cement dressings in an Arts and Crafts idiom to the design of E.A. Bates. It is prominently sited with a lofty square tower and distinctive bellcast roof, visible across the harbour. The spacious church interior includes a nave and lofty aisles and provides a superb acoustical environment for the magnificent Hill organ located in the high west gallery. Following a period of neglect, during which the pipework for the Great Wald Flute 4, Fifteenth 2 and the Choir Clarionet 8 disappeared, a restoration under the consultancy of David Kinsela was carried out in 1966. At this time, tuning slides were fitted to the metal fluework and the missing Great ranks were replaced by a Block Flute 2 and Fifteenth 2. The work also included the removal of the 1966 Block Flute 2 in order to restore a Wald Flute 4 to the organ and the non-original reed on the Choir was replaced by a Clarionet.

St. Augustine (354-430)
Born: 354, Thagaste (modern Algeria)
Died: August 28, 430, Hippo Regius Aurelius Augustine was born in North Africa in 354 AD to a pagan father and devout Christian mother. Gifted with a brilliant mind, he enjoyed academic success and worldly pleasures at Carthage until he became restless for truth and virtue. Successively disappointed by Platonic philosophy and Manichaen theology, he found his rest in the God of Catholic Christianity at the age of 32. Ten years later, Augustine reluctantly became Bishop of Hippo. A prolific writer and original thinker, Augustine's treatises, sermons and letters number into the hundreds. He put his gifted mind to work on subjects such as grace, the Trinity, the soul, predestination, the sacraments, sexuality and free will. Augustine's thought has had a profound impact on both Catholicism (primarily in his doctrine of the church) and Protestantism (especially in his concept of salvation).
The Life of Augustine of Hippo
Augustine is one of the precious few ancient figures who recorded a great deal of information about their life and times. In fact, he is one of very few historical figures to have written an autobiography, a genre that until recent centuries was rarely seen. In his
