St. Anselm of Canterbury
Today is the feast of St. Anselm of Canterbury , Doctor of the Church. This is from the Office of Readings for his feast. It's powerful. And, when I prayed it this morning, it was clear that the Spirit was speaking these words to me. (Imagine that! :)).
From the Proslogion by Saint Anselm, bishop My soul, have you found what you are looking for? You were looking for God, and you have discovered that he is the supreme being, and that you could not possibly imagine anything more perfect. You have discovered that this supreme being is life itself, light, wisdom, goodness, eternal blessedness and blessed eternity. He is everywhere, and he is timeless.

Description Steps worn by pilgrims' knees lead down into the south choir aisle where, on the left, stands St Anselm's Chapel, dedicated to Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109), Archbishop from 1094 until his death and a famous Scholastic philosopher and mystic. His support for the papacy during the Investiture controversy brought him into conflict with the English crown. The fresco of St Paul and the serpent (about 1160) high up in the apse is a superlative example of Romanesque wall painting.

St. Anselm of Canterbury's Ontological Argument, his substantive reasoning for the existence of God, is outlined in his 'Proslogion.' Though the essential components to St. Anselm's argument were utilized by philosophers and theologians in later years, including Immanuel Kant, it was not without criticism. Gaunilo, a monk of the abbey of Mamoutier, did not accept the premises presented by St. Anselm, and Gaunilo wrote a his retort to St. Anselm's suppositions entitled 'A Reply on Behalf of the Fool.' This 6 page paper presents an overview of the arguments of St. Anselm and then reflects upon the significance of the challenge presented by Gaunilo. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Today is the optional memorial of St. Anslem of Canterbury, Benedictine Monk, Bishop, Theologian, Philosopher, and Doctor of the Church. St. Anslem (b. 1033, Aosta, Lombardy; d. 1109, Canterbury, Kent) is generally considered to be the founder of the philosophical school of Scholasticism, for his attempt to analyze and illumine the truths of faith through the aid of reason. He was a major figure in the intellectual life of the Middle Ages, and a major political and ecclesiastical force as well. To learn more about him, go here
Here are a few of his gems:
"O God, let me know you and love you so that I may find joy in you; and if I cannot do so fully in this life, let me at least make some progress every day, until at last that knowledge, love and joy come to me in all their plenitude. While I am here on earth let me know you fully; let my love for you grow deeper here, so that there I may love you fully. On earth then I shall have great joy in hope, and in heaven complete joy in the fulfillment of my hope. "
"From the moment of her fiat Mary began to carry all of us in her womb."

Synopsis
ANSELM OF CANTERBURY In the history of theology Anselm stands as the father of orthodox scholasticism. He was called the second Augustine. Of the two theological tendencies at that time occupying the field, - the one more free and rational, represented by Berengarius; anti the other confining itself more closely to the tradition of the church, and represented by Lanfranc, - he chose the latter; and he defines the object of scholastical theology to be the logical development and dialectical demonstration of the doctrines of the church such as they were handed down through the Fathers. The dogmas of the church are to him identical with revelation itself; and their truth surpasses the conceptions of reason so far, that it seems to him to be mere vanity to doubt a dogma on account of its unintelligibility. Credo ut intelligam, non quaero intelligere ut credam

    INTRODUCTION
Saint Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109, is considered an important figure in the field of medieval Scholasticism, a theological school of thought that emphasized the close relationship between faith and reason and dominated Western philosophy for centuries. In practice, Anselm has become best known for his two works on the primary nature of God, the Monologion (1076) and Proslogion (1077–78)—the latter containing his famous ontological argument for God's existence. Both works are of particular interest in the history of church doctrine for their argumentative use of reason as the sole means of explaining the mysteries of revelation, as well as defining the characteristics of God without recourse to direct quotation of past authority. Anselm's other outstanding works include writings on Christian redemption, especially his Cur Deus Homo (1094–98) and his principal devotional compositions collected as Orationes sive Meditationes (1060–78). An innovative thinker and spiritual leader, Anselm also contributed to the development of Christian Platonism in the Middle Ages and was often involved in the eleventh- and twelfth-century disputes between ecclesiastical and secular authorities in the granting of high church offices known as the investiture controversy. Canonized in 1163, he was named a Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church in 1720.

Name: Anselm of Canterbury, St. Birth Date: Death Date: Nationality: Italian Gender: Male Occupations: theologian, archbishop, saint
Encyclopedia of World Biography on Anselm of Canterbury, St. The Italian prelate St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was a theologian, Doctor of the Church, and archbishop of Canterbury. He was one of the great thinkers of the Middle Ages. The 11th century witnessed a dramatic change in European history, the impact of which has been compared to that of the Protestant Reformation or the industrial revolution. Extraordinary economic expansion was accompanied by growth in political institutions and cultural life, especially in Italy and northern France. Anselm spent most of his life in these two countries, and he was involved in many of the cultural changes that took place. Anselm was born at Aosta in the Italian Alps. His family was noble and seems to have been related to the house of Savoy, the leading territorial magnates of the region. But Anselm's parents no longer possessed political or social prominence, and the family's economic resources were declining.

    About St. Anselm of Canterbury
April 21 is the feast day of St. Anselm of Canterbury Anselm was born in 1033 in the Alpine town of Aosta, an old Roman town at the southern end of Burgundy. His father was a Lombard who had become a citizen. His mother was a very devout woman from an old Burgundian family, whose family was from the valley of the Rhone, probably a decaying branch of a noble family. Anselm’s family narrowed his choices in life. He was expected to support his family’s declining fortune by a provincial education and lucrative career. He had no interest in law, rhetoric, or business. Before he was 15 years old, Anselm asked to be admitted to a Benedictine monastery. However, the monks refused for fear of his father’s objection. Around 1056, his mother died, leaving him without the “anchor” who had helped him through his frustrations. Soon afterward, he argued with his father and fled his childhood home, together with one friend. He spent the next three years partly in Burgundy and partly in France, where his mother’s relatives probably helped to support him. He had abandoned his religious interests of earlier years and was not quite sure what he was seeking. However, around the age of 26, he settled at Bec. At the time of Anselm’s arrival, the prior at Bec was Lanfranc, who had been widely known as a teacher of the liberal arts even before he became a monk. Lanfranc had taught the trivium and quadrivium, Scripture and the Church Fathers. He was a master of the dialectic, whose work broke new ground in applying the dialectic to Scripture in the 1050’s. Lanfranc used Aristotle’s explanation of the universe, found in
