(The coming community) Political Associations Holocaust studies, Refugees Giorgio Agamben is best known in the Anglo-American world for his The Coming Community . He writes on Adorno, Benjamin, Schmitt and aesthetics. Agamben’s work is important for our reflection on biopolitics , for he theorises post sovereign power and is concerned with those invested by its operations. Foucault ’s critique of the theory of sovereignty and his historical investigations into the emergence and practices of biopower throughout history, both in discourse and in society, are the point of departure for Agamben's reflections on bare life. His work is concerned with the notion of sovereignty and human rights within the modernist paradigm of biopolitical rule, the political / judicial and social realm. Agamben systematically attempts throughout his works to undermine the theory of sovereignty and unveil the political rationality operating behind its rhetoric in the present. One of the main innovative notions we find in his work is that of Homo Sacer and bare life, to which we will try and provide a definition: naked life means the life that can be killed but not sacrificed of the homo sacer (living dead).

Giorgio Agamben (1942-) Giorgio Agamben is currently one of the leading figures in Italian philosophy and radical political theory, and in recent years, his work has had a deep impact on contemporary scholarship in a number of disciplines in the Anglo-American intellectual world. Born in Rome in 1942, Agamben completed studies in Law and Philosophy with a doctoral thesis on the political thought of Simone Weil, and participated in Martin Heidegger’s seminars on Hegel and Heraclitus as a postdoctoral scholar. He has taught at various universities, including the Universities of Macerata and Verona and was Director of Programmes at the Collège Internationale de Paris . He has been a Visiting Professor at various universities in the United States of America, and was a Distinguished Professor at the New School, University in New York He caused a controversy when he refused to submit to the “biopolitical tattooing” requested by the United States Immigration Department for entry to the USA in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Agamben’s work does not follow a straightforward chronological path of development either conceptually or thematically. Instead, his work over the past 3 decades constitutes an elaborate and multifaceted recursive engagement with the problems introduced into Western philosophy by the highly original and often enigmatic works of Walter Benjamin, most notably in his book on German

A Brief History of the State of Exception
    by Giorgio Agamben
An excerpt from State of Exception
We have already seen how the state of siege had its origin in France during the Revolution. After being established with the Constituent Assembly's decree of July 8, 1791, it acquired its proper physiognomy as or with the Directorial law of August 27, 1797, and, finally, with Napoleon's decree of December 24, 1811. The idea of a suspension of the constitution (of the "rule of the constitution") had instead been introduced, as we have also seen, by the Constitution of 22 Frimaire Year 8. Article 14 of the Charte of 1814 granted the sovereign the power to "make the regulations and ordinances necessary for the execution of the laws and the security of the State"; because of the vagueness of the formula, Chateaubriand observed "that it is possible that one fine morning the whole Charte will be forfeited for the benefit of Article 14." The state of siege was expressly mentioned in the Acte additionel governativo ] decree (which is now perfectly familiar to us) became a regular practice in the European democracies.

The Political Life in Giorgio Agamben
    Colin McQuillan
One of the reasons the work of Giorgio Agamben has been so tremendously appealing is its contribution to contemporary debates concerning the nature of sovereignty and its relation to the processes of political subjectification. However, there is another aspect of Agamben’s thought, concerning the ontology of potentiality, which, while closely related to the first, has been less emphasized in the reception of Agamben’s work. In the introduction to Homo Sacer , where these two aspects of his work come together most powerfully and define the problematic of all of his more recent work, Agamben tells us that he had not understood their relation when he began the book. Politics, subjectivity, and potentiality were bound together, so much so that the meanings they acquired in the social sciences–and, presumably, in contemporary theoretical and philosophical discourse–could no longer be taken for granted. Indeed, he says that they must be “revised without reserve.” The results of his revision have, however, been widely contested.

An essential reevaluation of the proper role of politics in contemporary life.
A critical rethinking of the categories of politics within a new sociopolitical and historical context, this book builds on the previous work of the distinguished political philosopher Giorgio Agamben to address the status and nature of politics itself. Bringing politics face-to-face with its own failures of consciousness and consequence, Agamben frames his analysis in terms of clear contemporary relevance. He proposes, in his characteristically allusive and intriguing way, a politics of gesture-a politics of means without end. Giorgio Agamben Language and Death Stanzas , and The Coming Community Vincenzo Binetti is assistant professor of Romance languages and literature at the University of Michigan. Cesare Casarino teaches in the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota.
