Scottish, 1821-1848 The Scottish painter and arts activist David Octavius Hill (1802–1870) collaborated with the engineer and photographer Robert Adamson between 1843 and 1847 to pioneer many aspects of photography in Scotland.
Early life
Free Church of Scotland
Hill was present at the Disruption Assembly in 1843 when over 450 ministers walked out of the Church of Scotland assembly and down to another assembly hall to found the Free Church of Scotland. He decided to record the dramatic scene with the encouragement of his friend Lord Cockburn and another spectator, the physicist Sir David Brewster who suggested using the new invention, photography, to get likenesses of all the ministers present. Brewster was himself experimenting with this technology which only dated back to 1839, and he introduced Hill to another enthusiast, Robert Adamson. Hill and Adamson took a series of photographs of those who had been present and of the setting. The 5 foot x 11 foot 4 inches (1.53m x 3.45m) painting was eventually completed in 1866.
Photography studio
Newhaven fishergirls pose with a creel.Their collaboration, with Hill providing skill in composition and lighting, and Adamson considerable sensitivity and dexterity in handling the camera, proved extremely successful, and they soon broadened their subject matter. Adamson's studio, "Rock House", on Calton Hill in Edinburgh became the centre of their photographic experiments. Using the Calotype process, they produced a wide range of portraits depicting well-known Scottish luminaries of the time, including Hugh Miller, both in the studio and in outdoors settings, often amongst the elaborate tombs in Greyfriars Kirkyard

David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson
Scottish photographers. Hill, originally a painter, was a founding member of the Royal Scottish Academy and its secretary for 40 years. In 1843 he enlisted the help of Adamson, a chemist experienced in photography, in photographing the delegates to the founding convention of the Free Church of Scotland. They used the calotype process, by which an image was developed from a paper negative. In these and other portraits they demonstrated a masterly sense of form and composition and a dramatic use of light and shade. Their five-year partnership resulted in some 3,000 photographs, including many views of Edinburgh and small fishing villages. Before Adamson died at age 27, they produced some of the greatest photographic portraits of the 19th century. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson" from the 32 Volume Hill, David Octavius; and Adamson, Robert

Poor health prevented him from following an engineering career. He had a short business association with David Octavius Hill. In this partnership it would appear that Adamson was predominantly the technician, Hill the artist, and indeed when calotypes were exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, artistic credit was given to Hill, the photography to Adamson. The partnership arose from the need to make a record of a large number of people who were the founding fathers of the Free Church of Scotland (see Hill), but in fact their work consists of much more than that. There are numerous portraits, there are pictures which give us some glimpse of the times in which they lived, and some splendid landscape pictures. The partnership was short, lasting only four years or so, and broken by Adamson's early death at the age of twenty-seven. Nevertheless it was a remarkably productive one, and quite stunning photographs still remain.

The partnership of David Octavius Hill (1802-1870) and Robert Adamson (1821-1848) is one of the most significant and intriguing in the history of photography. The art of photography was announced to the public in 1839. Just four years later, in 1843, Robert Adamson established his studio in Rock House, on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It was to be the site of some of the most sophisticated photography ever created - in early years on through to the present day.
The Adamson Family, mid 1840s, HA0336. Robert Adamson is seated on the far right. Robert Adamson had enjoyed an intense upbringing in the fledgling art at St Andrews. His brother, Dr John Adamson, was a colleague and close friend of Sir David Brewster. Brewster had a unique relationship with the inventor of photography on paper, William Henry Fox Talbot . The two scientists shared information and experiences in photography with a freedom and openness unknown elsewhere in the beginning days of the art. Robert Adamson, trained as an engineer and very clever indeed, was the full beneficiary of a legacy of innovative experimental information. This was critical at a time when all photographic materials were made by the photographer himself. The painter, David Octavius Hill, was highly popular and influential in the Edinburgh artistic community. His brother, Alexander Hill, was a premier publisher of prints. Between them, they had extensive contacts with society in Edinburgh and beyond.
