  • Often the hearts of men and women are stirred, as likewise they are soothed in their sorrows, more by example than by words. And therefore, because I too have known some consolation from speech had with one who was a witness thereof, am I now minded to write of the sufferings which have sprung out of my misfortunes, for the eyes of one who, though absent, is of himself ever a consoler. This I do so that, in comparing your sorrows with mine, you may discover that yours are in truth nought, or at the most but of small account, and so shall you come to bear them more easily.

1. Life and Works
1.1 Life
Abelard's life is relatively well-known: in addition to events chronicled in the public record, his inner life is revealed in his autobiographical letter Historia calamitatum Abelard was born into the lesser nobility around 1079 in Le Pallet, a small town in Brittany near Nantes. He received early training in letters, and took to his studies with enthusiasm; his later writings show familiarity with Cicero, Horace, Juvenal, Ovid, Lucan, Seneca, and Vergil. Abelard eventually renounced his inheritance, including its attendant knighthood, to pursue philosophy. He did so by travelling to study with well-known philosophers, most notably Roscelin and William of Champeaux. Abelard returned to Paris sometime between 1108 and 1113 with his health restored and his ambition intact. He attended William of Champeaux's lectures, and entered into debate with William over the problem of universals. According to Abelard's report, he bested his teacher in debate, and gained his reputation as a dialectician of note, teaching at several schools. Around 1113 Abelard decided to study theology; he sought out the most eminent teacher of theology of his day, Anselm of Laon (not to be confused with Anselm of Canterbury), and became his student. It was not a good choice: Anselm's traditional methods did not appeal to Abelard, and, after some back-and-forth, Abelard returned to Paris to continue on his own. It would be the last time he studied with anyone.

ABELARD [1079-1142]
[A , P IERRE
A BELARD FROM H ELOISE C ITIES OF THE P LAIN.
A LETTER You well know, dearest, how much I lost in losing you, and that the manner of it put me to double torture. You only can comfort me. By you I was wounded, and by you I must be healed. And it is only you on whom the debt rests. I have obeyed the last tittle of your commands; and if you bade me, I would sacrifice my soul. God knows it was always you, and you only that I thought of. I looked for no dowry, no alliance of marriage. And if the name of wife is holier and more exalted, the name of friend always remained sweeter to me, or if you would not be angry, a meaner title; since the more I gave up, the less should I injure your present renown, and the more deserve your love. Nor had you yourself forgotten this in that letter which I recall. You are ready enough to set forth some of the reasons which I used to you, to persuade you not to fetter your freedom, but you pass over most of the pleas I made to withhold you from our ill-fated wedlock. I call God to witness that if Augustus, ruler of the world, should think me worthy the honor marriage, and settle the whole globe on me to rule forever, it would seem dearer and prouder to me to called your mistress than his empress. Not because a man is rich or powerful is he better: riches and power may come from luck, constancy is from virtue.

T he P en(is), C astration, and I dentity:
Abelard's Negotiations of Gender
Abelard's narrative of identity anxieties in his Letter of Consolation to a Friend incorrectly called by its modern editorial title, the Historia calamitatum (c.1132), is well known, but the significance of Abelard's representations of self and the body and his strategies for remasculinization have not yet become a concern of modern scholars. What Abelard tries to repress in this work, his desire and the social consequences of castration, continues to be repressed in most modern studies of Abelard and Heloise. Recent theory has brought into focus the complicated connections among the sexed human body, the discourses and ideologies that "make sex," and the construction of gender identities. The twelfth and thirteenth centuries appear to be an era of heightened anxiety about the body and its sexuality. Discourse about the body, the marks or signs of sexual and gender identity, the soul / body dichotomy, and the correspondences between the material or physical condition of the body and the mind and soul proliferated. As recent studies like John Baldwin's The Language of Sex make clear, the twelfth and thirteenth centuries seem to bear out Foucault's claim that each era produces the means simultaneously to represent, manage, and control sexuality in the discourses that circulate around bodies.

Click here for audio of Episode 583. Today, our search for the inventive mind takes us to a great love story. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W ho hasn't been torn by the story of Heloise and Abelard? Yet the story grows in power when we read it more closely. Pierre Abelard was born in 1079. He studied linguistics, logic, and dialectic. His brilliance flung him to the center of medieval intellectual life. At 35, he was the reigning gladiator in the arenas of verbal combat. Angry losers ran him off from school after school. Then he took a teaching post at Notre Dame. There, Fulbert, a canon of the Cathedral, put him to teaching his brilliant niece, Heloise. They became lovers, and then they secretly married. Abelard had lived his life from the neck up. Now, late in life, he learned to love. He wrote to Heloise
