Zsigmondy, Richard Adolf (1865-1929)
20th Century Born: Wien (Austria), 1865
Died: Göttingen (Germany), 1929 Zsigmondy studied in Wien, München, Berlin, and Graz. He then joined a glassworks in Jena, and in 1907 he became professor in Göttingen. Zigmondy investigated glasses in the context of colloid chemistry. He recognised the resistance of hydrophilic colloids against electrolytical coagulation (protective colloids : Schutzkolloide). In 1903 together with Henry Siedentopf he developed the ultramicroscope. From 1918 he did research on ultrafiltration to determine the size of colloid particles. In 1925 he was award the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Richard Adolf Zsigmondy (1865-1929)
Richard Zsigmondy Bécsben született, apja Bécsbe települt magyar fogorvos volt. Õ maga osztráknak vallotta magát, a család származására a neve utal, ezért számos forrásban a magyar Nobel-díjasok közé sorolják. Pedig amikor 1925-ben elnyerte a kémiai Nobel-díjat, a Magyar Természettudományi Közlöny be sem számolt eseményrõl.
Zsigmondy édesapja, Zsigmondy Adolf maga is tudománnyal foglalkozott, számos sebészeti eszköz feltalálója és több tanulmány szerzõje. Édesanyja Szakmáry Irma költõnõ, aki négy gyerekét a természet szeretetére nevelte.
1893-tól a grazi Mûszaki Fõiskola ( Technische Hochschule ) tanára. Richard Zsigmondyt a kolloidkémia egyik atyjaként emlegetik, mert 1903-ban a jénai Zeiss optikai gyár fizikusával F. W. Siedentopf-al kifejlesztették az ultramikroszkópot, melynek segítségével új távlatok nyíltak a kolloid oldatok tanulmányozásában.

100 Distinguished European Chemists:
from the chemical revolution to the 21st Century
The Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS) initiated, as a Millennium Project, the celebration of Distinguished European Chemists spanning a period of over two hundred years.
Member societies and individuals were invited to submit their nominations of distinguished European chemists from the end of the 18th century until the present day. In addition to Nobel Prize winners, there were nominations of many others from Europe who have, over more than two centuries, transformed the science and influenced science, industry or society worldwide. The final list includes a diversity of nationalities. As well as being published in the magazines of the national chemical societies the list is available for viewing here along with a brief biography and details of their achievements
18th. Century
Bergman, Tobern Olof (1735-1784)
Berthollet, Claude Louis (1748-1822)
