Associated eponyms: Brownian movement Ceaseless, zigzag random movement of microscopic particles when suspended in liquid or gas. Lange's test Quantitative colloidal gold reaction used in diagnosing cerebrospinal syphilis. It is now obsolete. Biography: Richard Adolf Zsigmondy was the son of Adolf Zsigmondy, a physician, who died when Zsigmondy was only 15 years old. Encouraged by their mother, Irma von Szakmary, Zsigmondy and his brothers lead an outdoor life, spending much of their time climbing, mountaineering, swimming and diving. He first studied chemistry under Professor Ernst Ludwig (1842-1815) of the Medical Faculty in Vienna, and then attended the Technische Hochschule in Vienna. In 1887 he went to Munich to study organic chemistry under Professor Wilhelm von Miller (1848-1899), and later obtained a similar position as assistant to the physicist Professor August Adolph Eduard Kundt (1839-1894) in Berlin.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Richard Adolf Zsigmondy The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1925 Richard Adolf Zsigmondy was born in Vienna on April 1, 1865. His father, doctor Adolf Zsigmondy, had done a great deal to promote dentistry in Austria, had invented several surgical instruments and devices. He died when Zsigmondy was only 15 years old. Zsigmondy's mother, Irma von Szakmary. Zsigmondy's interest in chemistry and physics developed at an early age. He then studied at the Technische Hochshule in vienna and in 1887 went to Munich to read organic chemistry under Professor W. von Miller. His work on lustre colors for glass and china induced him to study more closely the chemistry of colloids, and led to an appointment with the glass works Schott und Genossen in Jena, where he remained until 1900. He left in order to exclusively pursue scientific research. During this period he discovered how to prepare reproducibly gold hydrosois and also developed the slit-ultramicroscope in joint collaboration with Siedentopf. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1925 "for his demonstration of the heterogenous nature of colloid solutions and for thr methods he used, which have since become fundamental in modern colloid chemistry".
