Many well-known personalities from the fields of research, economics and politics are amongst the approximately 4000 members of the ZUNIV. Some of these personalities we would like to briefly introduce.
Prof. Dr. M. Zinkernagel
Professor Dr. Rolf M. Zinkernagel is the head of the institute for experimental immunology of the University of Zurich. After his studies at the medical faculty of the University of Basel, Professor Rolf M. Zinkernagel continued his studies in the USA and in Australia, as well as at the University of Zurich. He has earned great honours and received many distinctions in science in the last twenty years; the 1996 Nobel-prize for medicine being perhaps the most prestigious. He is of great service to many important organisations as a scientific counsellor. To the Academic Trainee Fund, which was founded by the ZUNIV, Professor Dr. Rolf M. Zinkernagel is committed as a counsellor as well.

research project On ontogeny specificity and memory of virus specific cytotoxic T cells and B cells Studies on T cell specificity: Various parameters such as CD4, CD8, MHC I, MHC II, accessory molecules and adhesion molecules, peptide concentrations, membrane, lipid content and mobility will be studied and correlated with cytotoxic T cell effector function and induction requirements using various peptide densitiies and various infection routes.
Response versus unresponsiveness by cytotoxic T cells: is there a therapeutic window where conditions of antigen encounter result in no induction of a T cell response, or in induction of an efficient protective T cell response or in complete deletion of T cells. What are the generalisable rules for immunological ignorance, protective induction versus overinduction/exhaustion. Various model situations including LCMV infections, LCMV-glycoprotein expressing transgenic mice and the HY male model will be used.
T cell memory versus protective immunity:
Under what conditions are memory T cells (quicker and higher) antigen independently versus antigen dependently maintained and how does this correlate with effective protection in model situations where the cytotoxic T cell response is limiting.
IgE responses against skin and mucosal ectoparasites:
Model infections with mites and two verm were infections (Nippostrongylus, H. polygrus) have been established to evaluate the basic rules of IgE induction under infection conditions. Local versus systemic repsonses will be compared and local versus systemic in parameters will be analysed.

Induction of Protective Cytotoxic T Cell Responses in the Presence of High Titers of Virus-neutralizing Antibodies: Implications for Passive and Active Immunization
By Peter Seiler, Christine Zimmermann, Doris Weibel, Michael Bruns, Hans Hengartner, and Rolf M. Zinkernagel From the The effect of preexistent virus-neutralizing antibodies on the active induction of antiviral T cell responses was studied in two model infections in mice. Against the noncytopathic lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), pretreatment with neutralizing antibodies conferred immediate protection against systemic virus spread and controlled the virus below detectable levels. However

Doherty, Zinkernagel Win Nobel Prize "The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is very pleased that two of our colleagues in immunology research, one of whom is a long-term grantee, have been awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine," says Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., NIAID director. Peter C. Doherty, Ph.D., an NIAID grantee since 1977, and Rolf M. Zinkernagel, Ph.D., an NIAID grantee in the late 1970s and mid-1980s, received the award today for their discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. "Their observations paved the way for the current understanding of how the immune system recognizes both microbial invaders and the body's own cells," says Dr. Fauci. The two scientists collaborated on their prize-winning research between 1973 and 1975 at the John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia. Dr. Doherty is currently chairman of the immunology department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and holds the hospital's Michael F. Tamer Endowed Chair for Immunology Biomedical Research. Dr. Zinkernagel is professor and director of the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. "Dr. Doherty and Dr. Zinkernagel established that the immune system recognizes microbial antigens in association with self molecules known as major histocompatibility antigens on a cell's surface," says Dr. Fauci. "Not only did their observations reveal how the immune system recognizes microbial invaders, but they also helped us understand, more broadly, how the immune system recognizes a molecule as self or non-self."
