USA Hideki Yukawa and the Pi Mesons Too often when Yukawa work is described only the predictions are noted so that it seems to the student that Yukawa just made a successful guess. This page's purpose is to present some of Yukawa's analysis that lay behind the successful prediction. When Hideki Yukawa wrote his article physicist were searching for the functional form of the strong force between nucleons (protons and neutrons). It was widely presumed, on the basis of the Coulomb force, that the strong force would be a power of the distance between the nucleons; i.e., 1/r n where r is the distance. Some proposed that the exponent n might be as large as 7 to account for the apparent short range of the nuclear force. Yukawa proposed the quite different form of:

To see this, consider the case of radiation from a point source. Radiation creates pressure propagated by photons. The intensity of the radiation is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source; i.e., A/r . The number of photons (and consequentially the energy) on a wave front of radius r is the intensity A/r or A. The wave front would have the same energy (and energy) when it expands to a radius of r

UNESCO issued its first two medals on Japanese themes in 2005, one for each of the two series.* The Hideki Yukawa medal commemorates the first Japanese laureate of the Nobel Prize, for physics, in 1949. An eminent scientist whose work is recognized worldwide, he contributed to the development of theoretical physics, particularly the theory of elementary particles. Professor Yukawa also received the Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy in 1940 and the Decoration of Cultural Merit in 1943. He earned honorary degrees and memberships from the University of Paris, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the International Academy of Philosophy and Sciences, and the Pontificia Academia Scientiarum. The Japanese National Commission for UNESCO requested that UNESCO should be associated in 2007 with the 100th anniversary of his birth. This proposal has been submitted to the 171st session of the Executive Board and, if approved, to the 33rd session of the General Conference.
Struck by the Paris Mint, the medal’s obverse features a portrait of the late physicist, while the reverse has the UNESCO logo. It was designed by renowned Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama. In 1961, he was the first recipient of a UNESCO fellowship and has remained active in fellowship programmes since. From 1990 to 1999, Professor Hirayama financed ten fellowships a year, through the Hirayama Silk Roads Fellowships programme He is an active campaigner for the Organization’s work in heritage preservation, both as a

finding the building blocks of the universe
The 2000 year old search for the building blocks of the universe started by the Greeks had led to a list of about 90 kinds of atoms build with nuclear cores of protons and neutrons surrounding by electrons. Understanding the electric glue that held the electrons to the nucleus provided another challenge. As early as 1875 James Clerk Maxwell had suggested that atoms must have structure more complicated that rigid bodies. Many scientists presumed there was a connection between the long known electrical charges on chemical ions, the resulting chemical bonds, and emission of spectra of light when atoms were heated. Many thought that atomic spectra must originate like radio broadcasts from oscillating electric charges inside of atoms. In 1905 Albert Einstein explained the photoelectric effect electrical forces could be entirely explained as continuous exchanges of virtual hidden quanta of light, finally named photons by G.N.Lewis in 1926.
