Japan James R. Bartholomew Introduction One of the first issues that quickly engages the attention of anyone aspiring to understand the history of modern science in Japan is when to date the beginning of the subject. In the strictest sense, we can say that modern Japanese science develops only as professional science, mostly according to the forms which first appeared in Germany and France, though with important influences from Britain and the United States. But even if these developments are to be dated from the Perry expeditions of 1853-54, modern science had an extensive pre-history in Japan tracing back to the earliest contacts with Europe in the late sixteenth century and especially to commercial exchanges with the Netherlands from the mid-seventeenth. Beyond that, there is the question of natural knowledge indigenous to East Asia and its importance for the development of modern science. Mostly through contacts with China and Korea extending over many centuries, the Japanese had considerable expertise in medicine, metallurgy, astronomy, architecture, ceramic technology and mathematics before they began dealing with Europe. During the Tokugawa period (1600-1867) knowledge imported from Europe was introduced to these existing learned specialties, and generally coexisted amicably with them.

Hideki Yukawa (1907-1981) was a theoretical physicist born in Tokyo and who graduated from the Kyoto Imperial University. He produced his meson theory in 1935 when aged 27. This theory, that proved the existence of mesons formed by the fusion of protons and neutrons, greatly influenced the way that elementary particles were viewed. It was this theory that led to Yukawa being awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize for Physics, the first Japanese to receive such an honor.
Fellow Kyoto Imperial University alumni
Shinichiro Tomonaga also became a Nobel laureate
for his quantum electrodynamics theory.
Shinichiro Tomonaga (1906-1979) joins Yukawa as being Japan's only Nobel Physics laureates. Tomonaga studied quantum mechanics, winning the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1965.

Hideki Yukawa (1907-1981)
UNESCO issued its first two medals on Japanese themes in 2005, one for each of the two series.* The Hideki Yukawa medal commemorates the first Japanese laureate of the Nobel Prize, for physics, in 1949. An eminent scientist whose work is recognized worldwide, he contributed to the development of theoretical physics, particularly the theory of elementary particles. Professor Yukawa also received the Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy in 1940 and the Decoration of Cultural Merit in 1943. He earned honorary degrees and memberships from the University of Paris, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the International Academy of Philosophy and Sciences, and the Pontificia Academia Scientiarum. The Japanese National Commission for UNESCO requested that UNESCO should be associated in 2007 with the 100th anniversary of his birth. This proposal has been submitted to the 171st session of the Executive Board and, if approved, to the 33rd session of the General Conference.
Struck by the Paris Mint, the medal’s obverse features a portrait of the late physicist, while the reverse has the UNESCO logo. It was designed by renowned Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama. In 1961, he was the first recipient of a UNESCO fellowship and has remained active in fellowship programmes since. From 1990 to 1999, Professor Hirayama financed ten fellowships a year, through the Hirayama Silk Roads Fellowships programme He is an active campaigner for the Organization’s work in heritage preservation, both as a
