Maud Gonne , the daug hter of a colonel in the British Army , was born on 20th December, in Aldershot in 1865. After her mother's early death she was sent to be educated in Paris. Her father was from a wealth Irish family and in 1882 she joined him in Dublin Maude Gonne's father died in 1886 and left her financially independent. She returned to France where she met and fell in love with the radical journalist, Lucien Millevoye. Influenced by Millevoye's political views, Maud became involved in radical politics. Maude Gonne moved to Ireland and settled in Donegal where she was active in the campaign to protect those evicted from their homes. This included building huts, fund-raising and writing to newspapers. Threatened with arrest, Maud fled to France in 1890 where she gave birth to Millevoye's child. While living in Paris she edited L'Irlande Libre , a monthly journal that promoted Irish independence.

Glossary entry for
Yeats, William Butler
William Butler Yeats (June 13, 1865 - January 28, 1939) celebrated Irish poet and nationalist, was born in Dublin, and educated in London and Dublin. While studying at the School of Art in Dublin he developed an interest in mystic religion and the supernatural. He helped to found the Irish Literary Society, and with the help of Lady Gregory and others, co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre (later the Irish National Theatre Society) in 1899. His wife's interest in automatic writing exercised a profound effect on his life and work. Yeats received the 1923 Nobel Prize in literature (see http://nobelprizes.com/ One of Yeats' longer works was entitled "A Vision" (with a Van reference in "Rave On"), which has been called "a completely obscure work about which there is hardly any literary criticism because as with Finnegans Wake, it is barely written in English" Van previously recorded a song called "Crazy Jane on God" (based on the Yeats poem of the same name) for the A Sense of Wonder album, but the Yeats estate wouldn't allow the song to be included (only classic settings of Yeats poems were allowed at the time). "Crazy Jane On God" was replaced on that album by "If You Only Knew", however it went out on the test/promo albums (vinyl), so there are copies around.

William Butler Yeats, c. The Granger Collection, New York City [Audio] (b. June 13, 1865, Sandymount, Dublin, Ire.d. Jan. 28, 1939, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France), Irish poet, dramatist, and prose writer, one of the greatest English-language poets of the 20th century. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. In 1867, when Yeats was only two, his family moved to London, but he spent much of his boyhood and school holidays in Sligo with his grandparents. This countryits scenery, folklore, and supernatural legendwould colour Yeats's work and form the setting of many of his poems. In 1880 his family moved back to Dublin, where he attended the high school. In 1883 he attended the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin, where the most important part of his education was in meeting other poets and artists. Meanwhile, Yeats was beginning to write: his first publication, two brief lyrics, appeared in the Dublin University Review in 1885. When the family moved back to London in 1887, Yeats took up the life of a professional writer. He joined the Theosophical Society, whose mysticism appealed to him because it was a form of imaginative life far removed from the workaday world. The age of science was repellent to Yeats; he was a visionary, and he insisted upon surrounding himself with poetic images. He began a study of the prophetic books of William Blake, and this enterprise brought him into contact with other visionary traditions, such as the Platonic, the Neoplatonic, the Swedenborgian, and the alchemical.

William Butler Yeats
Dort eine kleine Hütte bauen, aus Lehm und Geflecht gemacht;
Von den Schleiern des Morgens zu dem Ort, an dem die Grille singt;
Höre ich das Wasser des Sees leise ans Ufer schlagen;
The Lake Isle of Innisfree

The Poetry of william butler yeats set to music and sung by Patti Cohenour.

Eighteen poems by the much beloved Irish poet William Butler Yeats create the song cycle, "To An Isle In The Water". Vocalist: Patti Cohenour.
Only $15.99 plus shipping. USA Orders International Orders Click for "To An Isle In The Water" Reviews Composer John Aschenbrenner assembles eighteen poems by the much beloved Irish poet William Butler Yeats to create "To An Isle In The Water", a song cycle chronicling the course of a love affair. Evocative, sensual and romantic, these poems set to music feature the voice of Patti Cohenour as a woman looking back to a time when she once loved a poet. Now years after their affair has ended, she sings the words he sent her long ago:
Shy one, Shy One
Shy one of my heart,
She moves in the firelight
Pensively apart.....

From the first glimmer of passion to its final gleanings and a resolute farewell, this "stylistic arrangement of experience" (to borrow a phrase from Yeats), takes the listener on a journey through time, feeling and memory. Dazzling the ear, whispering to the heart, this journey-this flight-is one as only love, music and poetry can inspire.
Poems in the cycle: To an Isle in the Water, When You are Old, Brown Penny, The Lake Isle Of Innisfree, For Anne Gregory, Never Give all the Heart, The Collarbone Of A Hare, The Indian to His Love, Her Anxiety, Into The Twilight, The Lover Tells of the Rose in his Heart, Loves's Loneliness, The Falling of the Leaves, To A Squirrel At Kyle-na-no, Ephemera, The Countess Cathleen In Paradise, The White Birds, These Are The Clouds

Most of his formative and professional activities occurred near this Primary Location. His childhood was spent near Dublin and summer vacationing in Sligo (54N10; 8W40): locations that appear frequently in his writing. When he was nine the Yeats family briefly relocated to London, but in 1880 they returned to Howth, Ireland (53N23; 6W04; near Sandymount), where Yeats attended high school. He studied art in Dublin from 1884 to 1886, but the need to develop his literary talent soon emerged, especially following publication of Mosada (1885): a lyric poem that first appeared in The Dublin University Review Typical Neptune / Mercury keynotes include: “inspiration [...] for artistic expression,” “creative literary expression,” “stimulation of intuitive and creative mental processes,” and “creative writing and poetry.”1 Indeed, two preoccupations dominate Yeats’s work: “literary exploration / of occult, mystic, or spiritual themes” (Primary Mercury / Secondary Neptune) and the promulgation of Irish nationalism through the medium of “literary / propaganda” (Mercury / Neptune). “Mystic and occult imagery” (Neptune) occurs throughout his oeuvre; examples include the appearance of “magic” in
