Chen Ning Yang: More First-rate Scientists Will Pop up in China
In an interview with the media in Los Angeles, Chen Ning Yang, a famous physicist of Chinese origin, Nobel Prize winner pointed out that China, having taken science and technology as its strategic plan for state development, will enable it to have more first-rate scientists and professional talents in the 21st century.
When answering the question why no scientist in China's mainland has ever won the Nobel Prize while many overseas Chinese have carried away the laurels, he said that China needs four conditions to have its first-rate scientists doing first-rate scientific researches. Firstly, China needs talented people; secondly, a good tradition; thirdly, the determination and fourthly, the financial resources. China has so far obtained the previous three, yet is short of the fourth. The annual salary a professor earns in China is only US$2,000 at present. If this can come up to US$ 20,000, it would help ease these overseas professors' worries back at home, and China is sure to have more excellent scientists.
Yang said that there is a great wealth of talents in China and China's strategy for revitalizing the nation by science and technology also indicates that it has attached great importance to the cultivation of talents. The Chinese government has taken ten key universities under its wing for development with its investment in them doubled, but he discovered that unlike American scientists who can concentrate on researches without worries behind, many Chinese professors have to worry about their household work, housing and children. Yang said that if the salary for professors can be increased by 10 folds there will be no worries for them and they'll be able to engage in scientific researches in a more energetic way, and China will by then have more scientists to win the Nobel Prize.

SELECTED PAPERS (1945-1980) OF CHEN NING YANG
With Commentary

by Chen Ning Yang
A remarkable personal and professional chronicle by one of today's leading physicists, this is a collection of Chen Ning Yang's personally selected papers supplemented by his insightful commentaries. Including previously unpublished or hard-to-find works, this volume contains Yang's important papers on statistical physics, nuclear forces, and particle physics. Among them are his seminal work with T D Lee on the nonconservation of parity, for which they won the Nobel Prize, and his work with R L Mills, which led to modern gauge theories with their exciting prospects for the broad unification of field theories. The commentaries were written especially for this volume and provide a fascinating account of Yang's development as a physicist as well as a look at many important physicists of the 20th century. They trace the development of Yang's interests and ideas from his graduate school days to the present, showing how he worked with his colleagues and how their physics came into being. Together, the papers and commentaries in this unique collection comprise a powerful personal statement, shedding light on both the intellectual development of a great physicist and on the nature of scientific inquiry.

Chen Ning Yang on Aesthetics and Physics
Beauty is a form that people are always in pursuit for, while physics is an objective law that requires people to explore. It seems that they have nothing to do with each other. But in the eyes of Chen Ning Yang, the Nobel laureate in physics and the world celebrated physicist, beauty and physics are quite closely related with each other. April 26, Yang made this remark in the open air of Tsinghua University. Nearly 2,000 students listened to him and were charmed away by his inspiring speech. Yang said that he ever hit upon such an idea, when he was very young, as how to make a man who had never studied physics to understand how a scholar really felt when he discovered a certain law in physics. He said, people may get to know the authors by appreciating their music-pieces or reading their literary works. That is because these works are different in styles. To ordinary people, science is to study facts. Fact is a fact. There's no style about it at all. Actually it's not like this, said Yang. Physics is to study structures of the matter in the nature. There is a difference of beauty and wonderfulness in it. Different researchers have different feelings and experiences, and every one will eventually come to have ones own method and approach to it. That is ones style. He pointed out that to differentiate things by instincts is a very important ability for a scientist to achieve success. Citing an example, he said, Einstein had never engaged in the study of mathematics but devoted himself to physics. That is because Einstein found out that his ability in math study by instincts was no better than that on physics.

Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Chen Ning Yang: China's Sci-tech Development Surprising Professor Chen Ning Yang, Nobel Prize winner on Physics, said in his lecture at Nankai University Friday that China's science and technology developed at an unimaginable speed in the 20th century. In the long run, the country will have a strikingly brilliant vista for the development of the sector. Of course China still has a large gap in sophisticated scientific studies with the world advanced countries, Yang said, but the development of history is not a matter of one or two days. We should consider the problem from a long-term point of view. Our Chinese folks engaged in scientific research should have the confidence in it. Yang pointed out that comparing with the world advanced countries, China's primary problem for developing its science and technology lies in the lack of funds. However, with its rapid economic growth, the country will have a broad perspective for its sci-tech development. Presently, China sees the fastest economic growth among the countries across the world, which is an important advantage for the development of science and technology. As regards the advancement of physics, Yang thought the study on physics at present and in the decades to come would be focused on the applied physics. He said he was pleased to see that the Chinese government has realized the importance of it and the important functions of applied physics. Therefore it has set great store by the research and development of the applied physics.

Dr. Chen Ning Franklin YANG Chen Ning Franklin YANG pinyin : Yáng Zhènníng) (born September 22 ) is a Chinese American physicist , who worked on statistical mechanics and symmetry principles . He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in at the age of 35, with Tsung-Dao Lee , for a theory in which, to the surprise of theoretical physicists, the weak force between elementary particles did not have parity (mirror-reflection) symmetry. The theory was experimentally verified by Chien-Shiung Wu . Yang is also well known for his collaboration with Robert Mills in developing a gauge theory of a new class. Such "Yang-Mills theories" are now a fundamental part of the Standard Model of particle physics Born in Hefei Anhui China Yang attended elementary school in Beijing , and middle school first in Beijing, then in Kunming He received his Bachelor of Science degree from National Southwest Associated University . Two years later, he studied for his Master of Science degree with a full scholarship at Tsinghua University , at the time also in Kunming. He attended the

Professor Chen Ning Yang has won the 1999 Onsager Prize which will be
presented to Professor Yang at the APS Centennial Celebration in
Atlanta next March. The citation of the Onsager Prize reads: For his fundamental and seminal contributions to statistical
mechanics and the theory of quantum fluids, including the
circle theorem, the elaboration of off-diagonal long-range
order and flux quantization, the theory of Bose-Einstein
condensation, and exact calculations of thermodynamic
properties of one- and two-dimensional statistical mechanical models. Professor Chen Ning Yang's contributions to physics are both profound in their depths and far-reaching in their widths. His work with Professor T. D. Lee on the non-conservation of parity in weak interactions leaves a permanent imprint on the symmetry principles in modern physics. Physics Yang, Chen Ning Yang, Chen Ning (September 22, 1922 - ; China) Chen Ning Yang is a Chinese-born American theoretical physicist who was a corecipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957 along with Tsung-Dao Lee for their work in the law of parity conservation. Born in Hofei, Anhwei, China, Yang graduated from the Southwest Associated University then proceeded to obtain a B.Sc. which he did in 1942 and then his master's in 1944. In 1946, Yang was able to attend the University of Chicago and receive his Ph.D. in nuclear physics due to a fellowship. After completing his Ph.D under Edward Teller, Yang became an assistant to Enrico Fermi who wielded great influence in Yang's scientific development. It was while in Chicago that Yang began to work with Lee on the law of parity conservation. By 1953, it had come to the attention of both men that parity conservation had some flaws when a new meson (the K-meson) possessed decay modes of differing parity. As a result, Yang and Lee began to investigate further. Through research it was brought to light that no experimental evidence existed against parity nonconversation in work interactions. Experiments conducted by Yang and Lee proved the existence of parity violations as well as the fact that the symmetry that existed between the particle and the antiparticle otherwise known as the charge conjugation symmetry could in fact be broken by weak decays. In addition to his work on parity conservation and weak interactions, Yang's other interests included statistical mechanics which he worked on with a number of researchers including Lee and also research in the nature of elementary particle reactions at high energies. In 1954, Yang also worked on the gauge theory with Robert L. Mills.
