Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Yalow, Rosalyn Sussman , born in 1921, American medical physicist and Nobel Prize winner, who helped to develop the testing technique known as the radioimmunoassay . Yalow was born in New York City in 1921 and obtained a doctorate in physics from the University of Illinois in 1945. She taught at Hunter College from 1945 to 1950 and worked thereafter at the Veterans Administration Hospital in New York City. In the 1950s, with American physician Solomon Aaron Berson, she developed the radioimmunoassay technique for quantitating very small amounts of biological substances in body fluids, using a radioactively labeled material. Yalow shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for this work.

Yalow, Rosalyn Sussman US physicist who developed radioimmunoassay (RIA), a technique for detecting minute quantities of hormones present in the blood. It can be used to discover a range of hormones produced in the hypothalamic region of the brain. She shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 1977.
Sussman was born in New York and studied at Hunter College and at the University of Illinois. In the 1940s she started working in the Radioisotope Unit of the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx, New York, with a medical doctor, Sol Berson. When he died 1972, Yalow was appointed director of the laboratory.
To measure the concentration of a natural hormone, a solution containing a known amount of the radioisotope-labelled form of the hormone and its antibody is prepared. When a solution containing the natural hormone is added to the first solution, some of the labelled hormone is displaced from the hormone-antibody complex. The fraction of labelled hormone displaced is proportional to the amount of the natural hormone (which is unknown).

Rosalyn S. Yalow
By Seymour "Sy" Brody Rosalyn S. Yalow became the second woman to ever win the Nobel Prize in medicine, 1977. Her achievement was the development of RIA, an application of nuclear physics in clinical medicine that makes it possible for scientists to use radiotropic tracers to measure the con- centration of hundreds of pharmacologic and biologic substances in the blood and other fluids of the human body and in animals and plants. She invented this technique in 1959 to measure the amount of insulin in the blood of adult diabetics. She was born on July 19, 1921, in New York City, of Jewish parents, Clara and Simon Sussman. She attended the New York City public school system and in Walton High School she was encouraged by her chemistry teacher to pursue a career in science. She graduated Hunter College and accepted a teaching fellowship in physics at the University of Illinois. In 1945, she became the second woman to receive a Ph.D. degree in physics from Illinois. She met A. Aaron Yalow, a fellow physics student who was the son of a

Rosalyn Yalow
born July 19, 1921, New York, N.Y., U.S.
U.S. medical physicist. orig. Rosalyn Sussman She received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois. She developed the technique of radioimmunoassay (RIA) by combining techniques from radioisotope tracing and immunology. RIA proved a very sensitive and simple way to measure tiny concentrations of biological substances or drugs in blood or other body fluids. She originally applied RIA to study blood insulin levels in diabetes mellitus (1959), but the method soon found hundreds of other applications. In 1976 she became the first woman awarded the Albert Lasker Prize, and in 1977 she shared a Nobel Prize with Andrew V. Schally and Roger C.L. Guillemin

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE Rosalyn Yalow (she had married a fellow student, Aaron Yalow, in 1941) accepted a position as an engineer at the Federal Telecommunications Laboratory, and then in 1946 a full-time teaching position at her alma mater, Hunter College. During her graduate training in Illinois under the renowned nuclear physicist Maurice Goldhaber, Yalow became proficient in the construction and use of apparatus for the measurement of radioactive substances, a skill that would prove critical in her later research. In 1947, while still on the faculty at Hunter, Yalow became a consultant in nuclear physics at the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital in the Bronx, where the staff was conducting research on medical applications of radioactive materials. The VA decided to establish Radioisotope Services in several of its hospitals nationwide. Yalow helped develop the service at the Bronx VA and started research projects with Bernard Roswit, chief of radiotherapy services. Expanding these measuring techniques to the study of globins and other serum proteins, Yalow and Berson were determined to apply their methods to one of the most important classes of small peptides: hormones. According to Yalow, they chose insulin as a subject of research because it was the hormone most readily available in a purified form and was easier to work with in the laboratory than other hormones. But Yalow had a familial reason to be interested in insulin, as her husband, Aaron, was diabetic. Among the endocrine gland disorders, diabetes affects the greatest number of people, making insulin uniquely important. Without insulin and its ability to lower blood sugar, death is inevitable.
