    (February/March 1998)
Vital Life Statistics R osalyn Sussman Yalow was born on July 19, 1921, in Bronx, New York. She attended college at New York's Hunter College, graduating with honors in physics and chemistry in 1941. Y alow applied for entry in Purdue University's graduate physics program, but she was rejected. Purdue said its reasons were, "She is from New York. She is Jewish. She is a woman." Y alow did not give up. She applied to and was accepted by the University of Illinois. She received her Ph.D. in nuclear physics there. S he retired in 1991 and now spends her time calling for more science education, better child care, and various other causes. Achievements and Awards R osalyn Yalow's primary accomplishment involves the creation of a new analytic technique called the radioimmunoassay, or the RIA. This technique allowed quantifying very small amounts of biological substances in body fluids using radioactive-labeled material. This made it possible to diagnose conditions caused by minute changes in hormone levels. RIA was used in 1951 to show that adult diabetics did not always suffer from insuffiency of insulin in their blood and that some unknown factor must be blocking the action of insulin.

(Redirected from Rosalyn Yalow Rosalyn Sussman Yalow (born on July 19 ) is an American medical physicist , and a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her development of the radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique. Born Rosalyn Sussman in New York City , she graduated in 1941 from Hunter College , where she developed an interest in physics. Not believing that any good graduate school would admit and provide financial support to a woman (and a Jewish woman, at that), Sussman took a job as a secretary to a leading biochemist. However, soon after graduating she received an offer for a teaching assistantship in physics from the University of Illinois because World War II came up and all the men went off to war and the university offered scholarships for women rather than close down. She was the only woman among the department's 400 members, and the first since 1917. She married fellow student Aaron Yalow in 1943, and received her Ph.D.

"I am a Scientist because I Love Investigation" Nobel Prize in Medicine/Physiology, 1977 Rosalyn Yalow is a medical investigator at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Bronx, New York, and a professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Her research led to the development of the radioimmunoassay test. This test measures many different kinds of biologic substances in blood. Detection of some of these substances can lead to early diagnosis of disease. Dr. Rosalyn S. Yalow was a headstrong young girl who enjoyed the challenges of math and chemistry. "Perhaps the earliest memories I have are of being a stubborn, determined child. Through the years my mother has told me that it was fortunate that I chose to do acceptable things, for if I had chosen otherwise no one could have deflected me from my path." "By the seventh grade I was committed to mathematics. A great high school teacher excited my interest in chemistry, but when I went to Hunter College, my interest was diverted to physics." "In the late 1930's, physics, and in particular nuclear physics, was the most exciting field in the world. I was excited about achieving a career in physics."

RIA can be used to measure substances including hormones, vitamins, enzymes and toxins. I was born on July 19, 1921 in New York City and have always resided and worked there except for 3 1/2 years when I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois.
Perhaps the earliest memories I have are of being a stubborn, determined child. Through the years my mother has told me that it was fortunate that I chose to do acceptable things, for if I had chosen otherwise no one could have deflected me from my path.
By seventh grade I was committed to mathematics. A great chemistry teacher at Walton High School, Mr. Mondzak, excited my interest in chemistry, but when I went to Hunter, the college for women in New York City's college system (now the City University of New York), my interest was diverted to physics especially by Professors Herbert N. Otis and Duane Roller. In the late '30's when I was in college, physics, and in particular nuclear physics, was the most exciting field in the world. It seemed as if every major experiment brought a Nobel Prize. Eve Curie had just published the biography of her mother, Madame Marie Curie , which should be a must on the reading list of every young aspiring female scientist. As a Junior at college, I was hanging from the rafters in Room 301 of Pupin Laboratories (a physics lecture room at Columbia University) when

Schally and Roger Guillemin ) of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for her development of the technique of radioimmunoassay (RIA). Yalow graduated from Hunter College in New York City in 1941 and four years later received her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois. From 1946 to 1950 she lectured on physics at Hunter. In 1947 she became a consultant in nuclear physics to the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital, where from 1950 to 1970 she was physicist and assistant chief of the radioisotope service. With a colleague, Solomon A. Berson, Yalow began investigating various medical applications of radioactive isotopes. By combining techniques from radioisotope tracing and immunology, she developed RIA, which proved to be a very sensitive and simple means for measuring minute concentrations of biological and pharmacological substances in blood or other fluid samples. RIA was first applied by Yalow and Berson in 1959 in studying insulin concentration in the blood of diabetics, but the method soon found hundreds of other applications. In 1976 Yalow became the first woman to be awarded the Albert Lasker Prize for basic medical research. From 1973 she was director of the Solomon A. Berson Research Laboratory.
