Charles Thomson Rees Wilson (14. Wilson experimentálnì vypracoval novou metodu pozorování rùzných druhù záøení a v roce 1913 zkonstruoval zaøízení, pomocí kterého lze stopy drah tìchto záøení zviditelnit a vyfotografovat.

THE WILSON CLOUD CHAMBER
C harles Thomson Rees Wilson, who was English scientist living in the years 1869-1959, constructed a special machine - the Wilson cloud chamber. It made the microscopic occurrences being easier to observe. The way it worked was based on the occurrence of the condensation of the water vapour. For the occurrence of the condensation there is needed something more than the adequate temperature and pressure. That is the presence of the microscopic particles on which the steam could appear. The ions can be also the medium for condensation.
T he Wilson cloud chamber consists of the steam filled cylinder one side closed with the piston the other side- with the window. The fall of the piston causes the decrease of the temperature and the condensation of the steam on the ions present inside the cylinder.
T he radiation is able to cause ionization. Watching the created droplets one can see the path of radiation. The influence of the electric and also the magnetic field on radiation can be studied as well as the interaction between the radiation and the matter.
T he gift that scientists achieved was a new, powerful machine for study the many of microscopic occurrences.

(Redirected from Charles Wilson (physicist) Charles Thomson Rees Wilson February 14 November 15 ) was a Scottish physicist He was born in the parish of Glencorse, Midlothian to a farmer, John Wilson, and his mother Annie Clerk Harper. After his father died in , his family moved to Manchester . He was educated at Owen's College , studying biology with the intent to become a physician . He then went to Cambridge University where he became interested in physics and chemistry He thereafter became particularly interested in meteorology , and in he began to study clouds and their properties. He worked for some time at the observatory on Ben Nevis , where he made observations of cloud formation. He then tried to reproduce this effect on a smaller scale in the laboratory in Cambridge , expanding humid air within a sealed container. He later experimented with the creation of cloud trails in his chamber caused by ions and radiation . For the invention of the cloud chamber he received the Nobel Prize in He married Jessie Fraser in , the daughter of a minister from Glasgow , and the couple had four children. He died near

Nov. 15, 1959, Carlops, Peeblesshire), Scottish physicist who, with Arthur H. Compton , received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1927 for his invention of the Wilson cloud chamber , which became widely used in the study of radioactivity, X rays, cosmic rays, and other nuclear phenomena. Wilson began studying clouds as a meteorologist in 1895. In an effort to duplicate the effects of certain clouds on mountaintops, he devised a way of expanding moist air in a closed container. The expansion cooled the air so that it became supersaturated and moisture condensed on dust particles. Wilson noted that when he used dust-free air the air remained supersaturated and that clouds did not form until the degree of supersaturation reached a certain critical point. He believed that in the absence of dust the clouds formed by condensing on ions (charged atoms or molecules) in the air. Hearing of the discovery of X rays, he thought that ion formation as a result of such radiation might bring about more intensive cloud formation. He experimented and found that radiation left a trail of condensed water droplets in his cloud chamber. Perfected by 1912, his chamber proved indispensable in the study of nuclear physics and eventually led to the development (by Donald A. Glaser
