Charles Thomson Rees Wilson (1869 - 1959)
Taught no science at school, Wilson's interest sprung from the microscope he was given when he was thirteen. He went on to study medicine at Manchester in 1884, and continued as a research physicist at Cambridge University. An avid climber, in 1894 he worked briefly at the summit observatory on Ben Nevis and was amazed by the optical effects caused by the interaction of sunlight and cloud. These effects included coloured coronas around the sun, and shadows of the hill and observers cast on the mist below. The following year he was watching a mist-shrouded Ben Nevis when a storm broke out, and he experienced the massive electric field associated with storms as his hair stood on end, charged with static electricity. He decided to recreate the effects in his laboratory, and made clouds by expanding moist air in a chamber, with the moisture condensing on dust particles ('condensation nuclei') at a critical saturation point. He was surprised to discover that, even when all the dust particles were removed, he could continue to create clouds if he expanded the moist air sufficiently. To try and explain this effect, he rapidly expanded air in a glass vessel above water. He observed two distinct types of condensation. The first was rain-like and was produced repeatedly by low expansions, and the second was a cloud-like fog, found at higher expansions. This fog was very similar to the optical effects he had observed previously. He concluded that condensation could be created both on dust, and on rare spontaneously produced nuclei (actually ions).

Wilson, Charles Thomson Rees Charles Thomson Rees Wilson was born on the 14th of February, 1869, in the parish of Glencorse, near Edinburgh. His father, John Wilson, was a farmer, and his ancestors had been farmers in the South of Scotland for generations. His mother was Annie Clerk Harper.
At the age of four he lost his father, and his mother moved with the family to Manchester, where he was at first educated at a private school, and later at Owen's College - now the University of Manchester. Here, intending to become a physician, Wilson took up mainly biology. Having been granted an entrance scholarship in 1888 he went on to Cambridge (Sidney Sussex College), where he took his degree in 1892. It was here that he became interested in the physical sciences, especially physics and chemistry. (It was also possible that Wilson's decision to abandon medicine was influenced by Balfour Stewart, who was professor of physics at Owen's College at that time - about a dozen years earlier, J. J. Thomson, who also went to Cambridge, had passed through the same College.)
Clerk Maxwell
Student, at the end of that year, enabled him to devote all his time for the next three years to research, and for a year subsequent to this he was employed by the Meteorological Council in research on atmospheric electricity. The greater part of his work on the behaviour of ions as condensation nuclei was thus carried out in the years 1895-1900, whilst after this his other occupations - mainly tutorial - prevented him from dealing sufficiently with the development of the cloud chamber. Early in 1911, however, he was the first person to see and photograph the tracks of individual alpha- and beta-particles and electrons. (The latter were described by him as "little wisps and threads of clouds".) The event aroused great interest as the paths of the alpha-particles were just as

Name: Charles Thomson Rees Wilson Birth Date: February 14, 1869 Death Date: November 15, 1959 Place of Birth: Glencorse, Scotland Place of Death: Carlops, Scotland Nationality: Scottish Gender: Male Occupations: physicist Charles Thomson Rees Wilson Main Biography The Scottish physicist Charles Thomson Rees Wilson (1869-1959) was the inventor and developer of the Wilson cloud chamber. Charles Wilson was born on Feb. 14, 1869, in Glencorse near Edinburgh. He received his first undergraduate training at Owens College, now part of the University of Manchester, and from there, at the age of 19, he went to Cambridge University with the realization that physics and not medicine was to be his life's vocation. As Wilson himself disclosed it, two experiences determined the direction and ultimate fortunes of his interest in physics. One was his few weeks' stay in 1894 at the observatory on the top of Ben Nevis, the highest Scottish mountain. The magnificent optical phenomena observable in the interplay of sunshine, mist, and clouds "greatly excited my interest and made me wish to imitate them in the laboratory." The other experience consisted in his being exposed to an electric storm on the summit of Carn Mor Dearg in 1895. From this came Wilson's strong interest in atmospheric electricity, while the first experience inspired his efforts culminating in the construction of the first cloud chamber.
