Fighting the war against landmines Video interview with Jody Williams, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize,
International Campaign to Ban Landmines In this video interview, Ms. Williams talks about what inspired her to get involved in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and the findings of the 2004 edition of the Landmine Monitor report, which was officially launched at NATO on 17 November. Interview Questions: You were recognized, along with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, with the Nobel Peace Prize for your role as the founding co-ordinator of the ICBL, which was formally launched with six non-governmental organizations in October 1992. What inspired you to start your campaign, and what has been your greatest reward? Today you launched the annual update of the Landmine Monitor Report. Can you explain the major findings of this thousand-page, groundbreaking system that monitors the implementation and the compliance of the Mine Ban Treaty, and why you chose to launch your report here at NATO headquarters? As you mentioned, heads of state and government and NGOs will meet next month in Nairobi, at the UN summit on the implementation of the Ottawa Treaty. What do you see as the main challenges?

International Campaign to Ban Landmines Multimedia Audio file Video interview INTERVIEWER: Welcome, Miss Williams. You were recognized, along with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, with the Nobel Peace Prize for your role as the founding co-ordinator of the ICBL, which was formally launched with six non-governmental organizations in October 1992. What inspired you to start your campaign, and what has been your greatest reward? JODY WILLIAMS (International Campaign to Ban Landmines): I was actually invited by two organizations to see if it was possible to bring together non-governmental organizations to try to address the global problem of landmines. This was in November of '91. It was Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, in the United States, and Medico International, a humanitarian relief organization out of Germany. And so that was part of the very small beginning of what became the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which, in the space of five or six years, was able to capture the public conscience and get governments to respond to what we believed was an immediate need to resolve the problem of landmines through the Mine Ban Treaty. I would say, from the perspective of most of us in the landmine campaign, obviously the treaty is the biggest success that we've achieved in our ban movement because it provides the framework for the possibility of a world free of landmines. Personally, the other element of our ban movement that I think has been a real gift to the world is the model that we created through the ban movement of civil society, international institutions, UN agencies, the ICRC and governments like the government of Canada… which actually, though its Foreign Minister, Lloyd Axworthy, challenged the world to negotiate the treaty in one year. That model of a different way of approaching global problems I view personally as also one of the other huge successes of the effort to eliminate landmines.

NOBEL LAUREATE JODY WILLIAMS AT OSU THIS WEEKEND By Mark Floyd, 541-737-0788
SOURCE: Frank Ragulsky, 541-737-3374 CORVALLIS - Jody Williams, whose passionate leadership of a global move to ban land mines resulted in the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, will lead more than a hundred high school students in workshops and service projects this Friday through Sunday, March 18-20, at Oregon State University. She also will give a free public lecture on Friday in OSU's LaSells Stewart Center, titled "Individuals Can Make a Difference." The weekend events are part of the international PeaceJam program, which uses Nobel Peace Prize laureates to encourage youth to become involved in volunteer activities focusing on peace and civil rights. After working with a Nobel laureate for the weekend, participating students often work with teachers, community leaders, mentors and PeaceJam volunteers on service projects. "It's an inspiring program and this is one of first times PeaceJam has worked with a university to host one of the events," said Frank Ragulsky, director of OSU Student Media, which is coordinating the university's participation. PeaceJam was last held in the Northwest in 2004 in Vancouver, Wash. A number of service projects are planned for the Corvallis community Saturday afternoon. They include:

Jody Williams 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams, the 1997 co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, was born in Vermont in 1950. She learned to abhorinjustice at an early age from fellow schoolchildren, who unfairly picked on her disabled brother. Like many teenagers of her generation, she also developed an aversion to the war then being waged in Vietnam. Enticed by a leaflet she had received on the street one day, Williams attended a meeting about human rights violations taking place in El Salvador. With her recent experiences in Mexico, she developed an immediate and passionate interest in U.S. policy toward Central America. Transforming that passion into a career, she served from 1984 to 1986 as coordinator of the Nicaragua-Honduras Education Project, leading fact-finding delegations to the region. From 1986 to 1992, she also developed and directed humanitarian relief pro jects as the deputy director of the Los Angeles-based Medical Aid for El Salvador. In October 1992, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) was formally launched by the VVAF, Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, medico international, Mines Advisory Group, and Physicians for Human Rights. These six groups, which beca me the original steering committee of the ICBL, issued a "Joint Call to Ban Antipersonnel Landmines" that included putting an end to the use, production, trade, and stockpiling of antipersonnel landmines. They also urged governments to increase resources for humanitarian mine clearance and for victim assistance.

Nobelist: Group action required for a better world
By Kate Becker Can one person change the world? Not alone, says Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams, founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). Jody Williams, founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, speaks at the convocation of the Cornell Commitment, March 5, in Kennedy Hall. Frank DiMeo/University Photography Williams spoke at the annual convocation for the Cornell Commitment, March 5, in Kennedy Hall's Call Alumni Auditorium. The convocation celebrated the service and academic achievement of students from the Cornell Commitment programs: The Cornell Tradition, Cornell Presidential Research Scholars and Meinig Family Cornell National Scholars. Williams' talk, titled "The Individual's Impact on Social and Political Change," traced her history with the ICBL. The organization was launched in 1991 and achieved its goal of an international treaty banning anti-personnel land mines in 1997 a very short time on the calendar of international law, she noted. "I have no illusions that one individual, working alone, can change the world," said Williams. Networks of governmental and nongovernmental organizations are needed, she said, to create social change. Today, the ICBL involves more than 1,300 NGOs in more than 85 countries.

1997 Nobel Lecture
by Jody Williams, December 10, 1997
Coordinator, International Campaign to Ban Landmines Your Majesties, Honorable Members of the Nobel Committee, Excellencies and Honored Guests: It is a privilege to be here today, together with other representatives of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, to receive jointly the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. Our appreciation goes to those who nominated us and to the Nobel Committee for chosing this year to recognize, from among so many other nominees who have worked diligently for peace, the work of the International Campaign. I am deeply honored but whatever personal recognition derives from this award, I believe that this high tribute is the result of the truly historic achievement of this humanitarian effort to rid the world of one indiscriminate weapon. In the words of the Nobel Committee, the International Campaign "started a process which in the space of a few years changed a ban on antipersonnel mines from a vision to a feasible reality." Further, the Committee noted that the Campaign has been able to "express and mediate a broad range of popular commitment in an unprecedented way. With the governments of several small and medium-sized countries taking the issue up...this work has grown into a convincing example of an effective policy for peace."

Jody Williams speaks at Caltech By Andrew Hafer
Jody Williams, who was named co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for her work as coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, began her talk on Friday with the claim that the Nobel was awarded to her solely for political reasons. The Nobel Committee, she said, gave it to her, an American, solely to chastise Clinton for his failure to join 137 other countries in signing the 1997 treaty banning anti-personnel landmines. In a highly autobiographical talk, Jody Williams discussed her development as an activist and the means by which the coalition she led was able to bring about an international treaty less than five years after its founding. Jody Williams began her career as an activist when after being leafleted in 1982 regarding the atrocities in El Salvador. Within six months, she had left her job as a teacher and was working for Medical Aid for El Salvador, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that provided humanitarian relief. As if working in this war zone was not enough, during her time with Medical Aid Ms. Williams was even chased by Salvadoran death squads.

ICBL and Jody Williams Receive Nobel Peace Prize
In Oslo on 10 December, the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and its Coordinator, Jody Williams. Rae McGrath received the prize on behalf of the ICBL. Presenting the award, Nobel Committee Chair Francis Sejersted stated: You have not only dared to tackle your task, but also have proved that the impossible is possible." Extracts from the acceptance speeches follow. Rae McGrath "The International Campaign will do everything in its power in the coming months to achieve a legally-binding ban by December 1998. To this end, we, as Nobel Peace Prize laureates, issue a challenge directly to the heads of State of each signatory country: to make sure that your country is among the first 40 nations to ratify the Ottawa Treaty. ... All those States who failed to sign this Treaty have failed humanity. Size, power and economy are irrelevant. They are intransigent and uncaring in the face of compelling humanitarian, economic and environmental evidence that anti-personnel mines should be banned." Jody Williams "This campaign was born out of the minefields. This campaign was born of the humanitarian work of the mine-clearers and those putting limbs back on victims... They recognized the dire necessity of going to the root of the problem, and the root of the problem is the indiscriminate killer of civilians: the landmine...

Topi c: "A Global Ban on Landmines - treaty signing conference and mine action forum" MS JODY WILLIAMS (Coordinator, International Campaign to Ban Landmines): It has been my privilege and sometimes my pleasure, not always my pleasure, to coordinate this campaign since its inception at the end of 1991 and early 1992, when we were a handful of organizations. This work came out of the field. These were the NGOs, the de-miners, the people putting limbs on the victims, who were trying to deal with the problem in the field and recognized pretty quickly that that wasn't enough. If we didn't go to the root of the problem, if we didn't remove the weapon itself, we would never succeed. So we came together and formed the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which was formally launched in 1992. I have done an awful lot of interviews in the last few weeks, and I am always asked if we expected this. Certainly not! Who would have expected that within such a short time the governments of the world would have responded to a band of NGOs calling for a ban on the weapon in widespread use, a weapon that most military don't think about as different from all the other weapons they use it's just another one in the arsenal. It wasn't until the voice of civil society was raised to such a high degree that governments began to listen, that change began to move the world, with lighting and unexpected speed.
